New school bag and lunchbox every September?

Light hearted debate with OH.

Making a list of school uniform needed for daughter (8) going back to school.

He rolled his eyes snd asked "why does she need a new bag? What's wrong with the one she has?"

Nothing is wrong with it, it's just a bit grubby and battered. But when I was growing up we had a new bag and lunch box every year. He feels this is excessive.

Is it really that uncommon?

Zip got stuck and hoiked open doesn’t completely work
Stitches on handles are unraveling
Permanently stained
Near daily use, and look tatty

Ponoka7 · 15/08/2021 14:44

It's a vote for new hear as well. We have charity bag doorstep collections and they take bags etc. Or it's used outside of school to go swimming/beach etc.
Uniform is bought new and old stuff passed on to the community collections.

@qualitygirl, some kids play football with them, drag them along the floor etc. Not all children are driven to school, some even go on not-so-clean buses.

EspressoDoubleShot · 15/08/2021 14:46

Handbag? I have 40+. And if I fancy anew bag, I’ll buy it
I keep them in dust cover, annual handbag clinic refurb and clean

ihearttc · 15/08/2021 14:47

@Whinge

Like I said it probably has got more to do with my childhood than anything else. They don’t ask for new bags etc…it all comes from me. They need 2 bags at any one point…one to take stuff to football and one for school stuff (although on this thread that would probably wrong too). The old school bag gets transferred to the football bag each year (where it is destroyed by rain/boots/mud on the side of a pitch 4 times a week) and the new one gets used for school.

Everybody does things differently. I’m not buying my kids a £10,000 designer wardrobe each season…I’m replacing a school bag from sports direct.

waterlego · 15/08/2021 14:49

@burritofan

Monday: IPCC issues code red for humanity and the climate emergency. Tue-Fri: heatwaves, floods, disasters. Saturday: lol, lighthearted debate but should we buy a reusable item annually because sentiment?

I’d say “burn the world” but we already are. (Sorrynotsorry not feeling very lighthearted tbqh)

Yeah, this.

I tend to assume that everyone else wakes up in the night in a cold sweat about the state of the planet, as I do; then I read threads like this and remember that it has completely passed some people by. 😭

Whinge · 15/08/2021 14:50

Surely that's a reason not to replace them. Why not encourage them to look after their belongings?

qualitygirl · 15/08/2021 14:50

@Pastrydame I have two handbags...a tote for work that carry's my laptop and A4 diary. It's very old looking and getting extremely tatty I must add though but I'll wait for the strap to break. It only goes under my arm and under my desk tbh.
My other bag is a small crossbody that I use out and about casually. It's navy so it goes with everything. I'm a minimal person to be fair! I really don't see the point in multiples of things.

Strugglingtodomybest · 15/08/2021 14:52

I never did. I only replace things once they're worn out. Hopefully my kids will go on to the same.

qualitygirl · 15/08/2021 14:52

@Ponoka7 Well then as a pp said that's half a parenting issue isn't it. They need to be shown that they need to look after their belongings.Hmm

EspressoDoubleShot · 15/08/2021 14:53

They’re kids,yes the lunch bag is dragged,hoiked,dropped and thrown. That’s what kids do,they are exuberant and lively. They don’t need to curtail their spontaneity & energy to look after a cheap supermarket lunch bag.

Ponoka7 · 15/08/2021 14:53

"How many handbags do we all have?"

I have five. One black evening one. Another teal/blue that can be used day/night, summer and winter. A pink one and a orange one for summer and a beige/blush one for anytime. I also have a summer back pack. I buy decent handbags that last.

They do need to learn the value of looking after their belongings though surely?

REALLY @EspressoDoubleShot really...surely it doesn't matter how much it cost! If they are abusing items and being wreckless with their belongings that they SO SO wanted in September then surely that only shows you that they don't ACTUALLY give a rats arse!! Like I said down thread it's that attitude that they don't "lick off the ground"...it's learned...Sad

Exuberant and lively? You mean disrespectful and ill-mannered. There's no reason a child should be throwing a lunch bag or dragging it along the floor. If the consequence of this behaviour was to reuse the same bag, rather than being rewarded with a new one, then perhaps some chidlren might be more respectful of their belongings.
AdelindSchade · 15/08/2021 14:59

I had this exact debate with dd yesterday. She wanted a new one but her old one is fine. I might have given in but I knew dh would not cope with the wastefulness. He used to have to get his school clothes at particular shops with vouchers from the council. We don't deprive dd though she gets plenty of new things and the brands she wants.

waterlego · 15/08/2021 14:59

I’ve got three handbags. Two I bought myself, one was a gift. All are several years old.

woodhill · 15/08/2021 15:00

Mine had to leave the by their coat in primary then put back after lunch and bags were discouraged due to space.

woodhill · 15/08/2021 15:02

I would have got annoyed if my dc wrecked their things, more likely to have been lost or pinched though like school uniform or football boots unfortunately😟

EspressoDoubleShot · 15/08/2021 15:04

Your post is unintelligible. Clearly you’re very aerated and trying to provoke a response
No I won’t be berating my kids about a cheap lunch bag nor will I be lecturing them about the maintenance and longevity of a lunchbag.

So you, I’ll leave you with your rats arse and inexplicable quip about **attitude that they don't "lick off the ground"...it's learned..😰

ihearttc · 15/08/2021 15:05

@Whinge

Do you have teenage boys by any chance? They have about 40 mins to queue up to buy food(right over the other side of the school), eat it and then play football. Their bags get thrown on the floor in a heap, some of them even get kicked by their mates and drink squirted at them. They are cheap school bags to hold books, lunch and a PE not gold plated designer bags. I’d rather my exercises at lunch time with his mates than worry about a £20 bag.
Honestly some of the comments on here are ridiculous. Loads of DS’s year (he is y11) smoke and do drugs…and you think I’m concerned about needing to replace a school bag every year?

woodhill · 15/08/2021 15:08

My ds used to wreck his trousers playing football in primary and early secondary - that was frustrating😊

burritofan · 15/08/2021 15:08

Perhaps your 40+ unnecessary handbags are inhibiting your understanding?

Whinge · 15/08/2021 15:10

Your post is unintelligible.

I disagree. I understood exactly what qualitygirl meant by their post.

If you want to encourage your children to be wasteful and destroy items just because they were cheap then by all means carry on. Just don't moan when they apply the same attitude to other more expensive items, because they don't respect what they have and will just expect you to replace it.

qualitygirl · 15/08/2021 15:11

@EspressoDoubleShot I'm not trying provoke anything...but clearly I have?

You leave them abuse their belongings then. But in my opinion it doesn't matter how cheap it is it's the attitude that is disappointing. But yes, by all means you ignore that.

EspressoDoubleShot · 15/08/2021 15:11

No it’s the unintelligible post,obscure references to rats arses and licking floors that render the post gibberish @burrito
