New school bag and lunchbox every September?

Light hearted debate with OH.

Making a list of school uniform needed for daughter (8) going back to school.

He rolled his eyes snd asked "why does she need a new bag? What's wrong with the one she has?"

Nothing is wrong with it, it's just a bit grubby and battered. But when I was growing up we had a new bag and lunch box every year. He feels this is excessive.

Is it really that uncommon?

@EspressoDoubleShot

You bought your niece a uni student, an essential item. Believable she’s family after all *@00100001* Most people would if they could afford it

Not believable is the suggestion that one routinely buys items for random others.

Ok. So you don't believe I bought a scooter for the child that had there's stolen?

I do routinely buy for other 'random' people,as mentioned up thread. I support a baby bank and will buy the things they need, all new, all to random people who I will never ever meet.

I donate to food banks every week. And they always get something nicer than I would usually buy myself.

Just because you don't do it, doesn't mean it isn't happening.

EspressoDoubleShot · 17/08/2021 22:36

I’m didn’t actually comment on the scooter. Clearly you want praised
You’ve mentioned it twice now

ineedaholidaynow · 17/08/2021 22:39

@EspressoDoubleShot can't people do nice things, or do you think it is always virtue signalling?

EspressoDoubleShot · 17/08/2021 22:39

No.
Donations and food bank are accessible & achievable, socially in a norm. Most folk all do it and school encourages it
Deciding to buy the poor pupils in the school new and retain your own used items, that is virtue signalling . Look what I’m doing, all new you know…

Of you're shouting at the rooftops, then yes it's virtue signalling. But if you're quietly donating needed new items, as many do with food banks etc...then how is that virtue signalling??
ineedaholidaynow · 17/08/2021 22:47

But most people who give new things to schools like that probably wouldn't be telling all and sundry that they are doing that. So why is it virtue signalling?

Landfills are full

My daughter has a new school bag every year. The old ones are either kept and re-used, or if we can’t use them and they are still in good condition, we pack them and donate to www.marysmeals.org.uk/get-involved/campaigns/the-backpack-project

We’d never just throw stuff like that out.

Where do we stand on donating new items to the school uniform box because you bought them in Sainsbury’s when you happened to be near one, discovered they don’t fit, and your closest one is 30 miles away and can’t be bothered with the faff of going back return them? Is that virtue signalling?

elliejjtiny · 18/08/2021 20:56

Not every year. My boys have a new bag for the start of preschool, primary school and secondary school. Old bags that aren't worn out go in the dressing up cupboard. Ds2 got a new bag part way through year 8 as his had worn out.

DwangelaForever · 18/08/2021 20:57

I had a new bag, pencil case and lunch box every year growing up too! It was my fave part of the summer closing my new lunch box pencil case and school bag

........
I thought exactly the same, LittleBear. You remove all trace of name or anything identifiable, clean it up and donate anonymously.

My mother would only replace stuff if it was truly beyond saving. I had the same bag for more then 4 years.

DemBonesDemBones · 19/08/2021 19:17

Goodness no. We've been using some of our lunchboxes for 5 years. Bags and lunchboxes are only replaced if they are no longer useable here.
