To expect cake on my birthday?

Not a even a whole cake, just a slice will do!

Today is my birthday and i've had a lovely day with DP and have received some lovely gifts - but no cake.

I will be heading off to the supermarket later to get some for myself. Which i'll enjoy tonight with a gin and a film. But AIBcompletelyU and ungrateful here to be a little sad that I have to buy my own?

(Very aware this is a first world problem)

Happy birthday @HelloCanYouHearMe and @HappyMeal564, we are birthday triplets! I also have an actual twin so we have to share with her as well Thanks🎂♥️

Happy birthday OP. Don’t let the cake thing upset you.

Men, as a rule, would never think to sort out a birthday cake for anybody. You have to do it yourself (sadly). I once saw Jeanette Winterson talk on TV about what it was to be a woman, and one of the descriptions she used was that women are the invisible mending in families. Yes, we are, and remembering to organise birthday cakes is just one example!

I’ve never had cake on my boffday, have I been missing out?

PluggingAway · 15/08/2021 06:41

Hmm... I would always expect cake on my birthday, but I know others who don't.

I think it depends what precedent has been set. If this is your first birthday with DP I would be sure to let him know that birthday cake is a part of your birthday.

Also... happy birthday!

Yes!!
reallifegetsintheway2 · 15/08/2021 06:53

OMG! This is so spooky- it was my birthday yesterday. I didn't have cake either for the first time in years. My mum was really agrieved she didn't get to come over for cake. But no-one bought me a cake! She went to sainsburys and M and S on Friday - could have bought me a cake then. DH was working- he didn't buy me a cake. The kids aren't that fond of cake. I cba to go and buy my own cake.
It has stopped me from eating the whole cake though!!

ShippingNews · 15/08/2021 06:57

I always buy my own - personally I think that all grownups should do that. Sitting around waiting for someone else to do something which I can do myself, seems silly to me. I always buy a tiny, every pretty / tasty cake which is just enough for two .

Fairyliz · 15/08/2021 07:02

@LegoCaltrops

I’ve never had anyone provide me with cake on my birthday since I moved out of my parents house. I made one for myself a couple of times. I always do one for DD, & for DH if he wants one.

I’d rather have the day off from housework TBH.

@LegoCaltrops This is actually quite sad unless you don’t actually like cake. So you go around ensuring the rest of your family get cake but nobody does the same for you?
leafygarden42 · 15/08/2021 07:11

Grin Grin @Fairyliz

It isn't sad !! It's completely normal....

But - whatever - we're all different.

youshallnotpass9 · 15/08/2021 07:13

If it helps, myself and DS bake a cake for DP every year and every year the poor sod has to pretend to like it.

We are hitting roughly 8 years since we started doing this and since he doesn't want to hurt our feelings he wolfs down a slice. Maybe his slice is the only slice which tastes good, but considering our dog who will happily eat cat shit refuses to eat it, makes me think maybe not

For the record DP goes out and gets me a pud with custard for mine

I just had a big birthday and bought my own, specially made cake for 60 quid. I knew no-one else would!!

Sometimes you have to make yourself happy because no-one else will.

Apeirogon · 15/08/2021 07:18

I sort out my own cake. It doesn't bother me.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 15/08/2021 07:19

No one buys me a cake for my birthday. Yesterday I bought an X-Box controller cake (DS chose it) as we're going on a picnic with friends and we'll have a joint celebration there.

TheWatersofMarch · 15/08/2021 07:23

It's not important to me but if it is to you, you need to tell your nearest and dearest and remind them.

MaxiPaddy · 15/08/2021 07:44

Don't care what pp's say. YANU for wanting cake on your birthday, ffs.

Happy birthday.

Aprilx · 15/08/2021 07:48

Yes YABU. I didn’t think birthday card was something adults usually do for their birthday. If I wanted a cake, I would see no issue with buying it myself, but I am also happy to book a restaurant , spa day or whatever else I want for my birthday.

RavenclawsRoar · 15/08/2021 07:56

I think YABU but that's because when I was a child my parents would take me to the shop to choose my own birthday cake or ingredients and decorations if I wanted a homemade one. This was my absolute favourite part of the day! I still insist on choosing and buying my own cake now so I know I get the one I want.

DayKay · 15/08/2021 07:57

I have trained the kids in baking cakes so everyone, including me, gets cake baked on birthdays.

MissTrip82 · 15/08/2021 08:01

Yes we would always make sure a family member, friend or colleague gets some kind of cake on their birthday.

Lol at a cake on your birthday being a weirdly ‘specific’ expectation. On what planet.

saleorbouy · 15/08/2021 08:06

I've had so many birthdays away from family and friends I really don't care to much now for cake or presents.
I like cake though, just stumbled on a new recipe for Tunisian Orange cake, it's a doddle to make and scrumptious too.

bluecarry · 15/08/2021 08:11

Personally never have cake on my birthday but I think if it's something that's important to you, than it's only fair to let your DP know so he can arrange... my DP is french and they don't do greeting cards. I love a birthday card and that feels really important to me, I made this clear and always get one as a result... if I hadn't mentioned it then it would simply never have occurred to DP.

Vaselike · 15/08/2021 08:19

I would always expect cake on my birthday.
I don’t mind making it.
However, I’m not that bothered about presents and “stuff”. Honestly: cake and a card and the birthday is acknowledged, that’s all I care about really.
