To expect cake on my birthday?

HelloCanYouHearMe · 14/08/2021 16:13

Not a even a whole cake, just a slice will do!

Today is my birthday and i've had a lovely day with DP and have received some lovely gifts - but no cake.

I will be heading off to the supermarket later to get some for myself. Which i'll enjoy tonight with a gin and a film. But AIBcompletelyU and ungrateful here to be a little sad that I have to buy my own?

(Very aware this is a first world problem)

Why are you home alone tonight op?

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/08/2021 17:11

Why are you going to be alone on your birthday night
@HelloCanYouHearMe

That would piss me off more tbh

But yes a cake is nice fir birthday

FrankGrillosWrist · 14/08/2021 17:12

Tell him. I used to just book us a holiday, I don’t really want anything else. But I make it quite clear that cake, wine, chocolate, or perfume would be most welcome too.

ThinWomansBrain · 14/08/2021 17:12

YABU
cake - yes, definitely - and buying it yourself means you get exactly the cake you want.
cake with gin - yuk, waste of both

DroopyClematis · 14/08/2021 17:12

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

I'd rather a pork pie personally (I didn't get one Sad)
Hell yeah!
Gladioli23 · 14/08/2021 17:13

I totally recognise some people don't want a cake - my mum is one of them. But I do want cake and so do most of my friends. So if a person likes to have cake for their birthday really I'd expect someone to step up and provide one!

Anniegetyourgun · 14/08/2021 17:18

I would never have trusted XH to get my birthday cake. Even if I specified the exact type, size, cost etc and drew him a map of the exact shelf he could find it on he would somehow have contrived to buy the wrong thing (I've never been sure whether this was on purpose, but strongly suspect it was). Anyway, I'd rather look at what they've got and pick out what I fancied than send someone else to choose for me.

That said, a friend who works in a cake shop is allowed to snaffle the leftovers, and for my last birthday was able to come up with a good quality item that absolutely hit the spot at the amazingly reasonable price of... nothing at all Smile

Echobelly · 14/08/2021 18:17

Never occurred to me to expect cake on the day since I was a kid. Nothing wrong with wanting cake when you're older, but I wouldn't expect people to know that you want it as an adult unless you say so?

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 14/08/2021 18:23

Do they normally get you cake? Do they know you expect it?

Askingforfriend · 14/08/2021 18:27

I am explicit if I want something in particular. So DH would do his best to make a cake if that is what I wanted (or DS), or if I wanted a cake from a certain place, he would get it. He isn't a mind reader. A simple "I'd really like a homemade cake for my birthday, would you make me one?" or "I'm feeling like a piece of birthday cake... the lemon slice from Starbucks would be lovely. Would you get one for me please?"

AryaStarkWolf · 14/08/2021 18:28

YANBU! A birthday is not a birthday without cake!

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/08/2021 18:31

YANBU to want cake on your birthday. But you need to say so if it’s not forthcoming, on advance.

YABU to have cake with gin. Gin doesn’t go with anything sweet.

luckylavender · 14/08/2021 18:32

I don't really understand the fuss about adult birthdays & I can't remember the last time anyone provided me with a cake for my birthday. But then I can buy one if I want it.

luciasanta · 14/08/2021 18:33

YANBU!

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/08/2021 18:44

I've made it clear to my family that on my birthday I don't expect to cook, plan or even think, that I expect a cake with at least one candle, and something to open, even if it costs less than £5. And I mark the date on the calendar to avoid mistakes. No point in setting myself up for disappointment.

HappyMeal564 · 14/08/2021 18:53

Happy birthday! We're birthday twins! I didn't get one today either 😕 but I'll treat myself tomorrow! 😁

Thesearmsofmine · 14/08/2021 18:56

It’s not a birthday without cake in this house. On mine DH will buy or make me one. I always make some cake for my parents birthdays too with candles, it’s like to make a little effort to make someone smile.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 14/08/2021 19:03

@HelloCanYouHearMe 😱😱😱😱😱 no cake?? 😱😱😱😱 NEVER!!!

(Did you tell him you are on a diet or something?) otherwise you are NOT being unreasonable!

(But I buy myself a cake every week! 🙈🤣🙈🤣🙈)

snowspider · 14/08/2021 19:08

I am also in the give instructions/advance warning and then repeat camp! I am keen on celebrations for everyone of any age, but dp is from a much more only the children matter type of vibe. So if I want something to happen I set the thought going and keep it rolling!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/08/2021 19:08

Just tell him that you like cake. Next time you will get cake. My DH is not fussed about his birthday so he has different standards (basically prrtend it's not happening) and I just told him that cake is something I do really want, and have dinner and drinks on my birthday and that's it. I get a lovely small cake every year.

nancybotwinbloom · 14/08/2021 19:12

Happy birthday op Cake

I've just realised I got a cake for my 40th but no other cakes! Together 6 years. I love cake aswell.

I don't know how I haven't noticed! Usually go for a meal with family and friends and get a dessert but not an actual cake.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 14/08/2021 19:21

For those asking why im on my own tonight - DP and I don't currently live together and we're taking the kids away on Monday, so i've come home tonight so we can both sort all our stuff and pack etc... & my DS is with the ex

Im not fussed about being in my own tonight as i've been with DP since thursday and I do quite like a bit of alone time (ideally with cake)

Apologies for the delay in responding - I was driving home....

The supermarket cake selection was poor, so i picked up a little bakewell tart and came home to a cake card that had been arranged by a friend who lives at the other end of the country, which was a lovely surprise - I got my cake in the end!!!
