I randomly bought a euromillions ticket for last night (very rare for me). Checked my numbers and only matched one, so no riches for me Grin

The jackpot was £96 million. Out of interest, I looked and nobody had won, but three people matched 5 + 1 bonus (so one number missed).

Each won the grand total of...

£158,344.30.

Now that figure is nothing to be sniffed at of course, but I don't think I've ever managed to match more than two numbers, so if I'd landed 5 + 1 I'd probably have run around screaming thinking I was a millionaire, telling everyone I knew, and only THEN checked how much I'd won.

I'm not going to lie, I would have been sorely disappointed. The difference of potentially one digit meaning a win of ~£96 million less would just be too much Grin

I'd definitely be sulking. Initially anyway. It doesn't bear thinking about Grin

I’d be happy to win anything. I’ve never won anything in my life !

Sparklfairy · 14/08/2021 08:13

So would I of course, i know myself well enough though that I would still kick myself every single day for not choosing the right final number Grin

I totally agree! I couldn't even buy a house with £158k, it's a pittance compared to the jackpot and just that 1 extra number!

LowlytheWorm · 14/08/2021 08:25

Pottedpalm · 14/08/2021 08:27

I have often thought that a smaller jackpot and larger sums for other prizes would be better. No one needs £57 million or whatever. A few £5 mill prizes would make more sense.

mrsfeatherbottom · 14/08/2021 08:28

I'd rather win £158k than £96 million. Am I weird?

PerpetualStudent · 14/08/2021 08:31

Yeah, I’d rather the 150k too TBH - 96 million would be completely life-changing in complicated/messy ways as well as good.

Crockof · 14/08/2021 08:33

Agree, £150k wouldn't buy me a one bed flat where I live, it should be at least 1 million for 5+2.

mrsfeather I wouldn't want £96 million either but £150k isn't enough. I'd prefer 96 millionaires but I wonder if there are rules to stop too many winning. (Ie one person winning big doesn't change the balance of the world, if 1000's won a million it might?)

Everythingmagnolia · 14/08/2021 08:33

I would much prefer smaller prizes. I can't imagine the pressure if winning 96 million, but I get what you mean!

LittleStar22 · 14/08/2021 08:36

Someone did win it all… it just wasn’t a UK winner… someone else in Europe won it.

SalmonEile · 14/08/2021 08:39

@Pottedpalm I guess the reason they don’t give out more 5m prizes (or bigger prizes for less numbers in general) as they’re more likely to be won where as the huge jackpot is less likely and thus they make more money themselves

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 14/08/2021 08:43

I think the distribution is terrible, too, but I guess they just go all out to make that jackpot as large as possible.

Sparklfairy · 14/08/2021 08:53

@LittleStar22 oh my mistake! I didn't see in the results/prize breakdown that it only said UK.

I'd still be disappointed though. One number short shouldn't equal 0.16% of the jackpot money Grin if my maths is right, haven't finished my coffee yet

I know… I’d be gutted too!
I only got one number!

cricketmum84 · 14/08/2021 09:07

I wouldn't be able to cope with winning 96m. I think I would be constantly scared of my kids being held to ransom or people breaking in knowing I had that much money.

£158k would pay off the mortgage and give us an amazing safety net and some fancy handbags!

Sparklfairy · 14/08/2021 09:11

@cricketmum84 just don't tell anyone, lock the millions away and live off the interest of the interest of the interest Grin

As you can see, I've thought this through. The only flaw in my plan is I never seem to pick the winning numbers!

Imnothereforthedrama · 14/08/2021 09:14

I’ve thought this before , yeah I’d think I’d be disappointed but if I won £158k it’d be able to pay off rest of my mortgage and debts and be left some for home improvements and a very nice holiday so life would be very nice .

WomanStanleyWoman · 14/08/2021 10:12

In the first ever UK Lottery draw, my cousin got four numbers - the first four out, so she was virtually wetting herself with excitement.

She got £32.

Sparklfairy · 14/08/2021 10:31

@WomanStanleyWoman that's depressing, she must have been so upset! It sort of reminds me of those awful 'pranks' people used to do back when the draws were televised. Buy a ticket with last week's winning numbers, then play a recording of last week's draw and get the victim to check the numbers. The absolute elation and then crushing disappointment realising it wasn't real was horrible to watch Sad

I won £4.40 on the EuroMillions last night Grin

Wimowehwimowehwimowehwimoweh · 14/08/2021 10:42

I would just be ecstatic that I could pay my mortgage off tbh.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 14/08/2021 11:27

Did anyone see that documentary about the Scottish Islanders who shared 3 million in the postcode lottery. The premise was that they all had pretty much what they needed in life and most were struggling to find ways to spend their relative new wealth.
I thought it was shockingly naive for the entire neighbourhood to be public about it. I mean it's not a massive amount, by any means but there are some cf's out there. They were all so lovely and I thought they could be potential targets.

Ponoka7 · 14/08/2021 11:30

I'm could buy my DD a three bed house and get a new bathroom/kitchen with that (Merseyside). So I'd just count my blessings.
I've been skint and won £10. I think we'd all be happier if we were more grateful.

GetTaeFuck · 14/08/2021 11:40

£10K would do me right now, it would allow me to pay 12 months rent upfront in lieu of a guarantor (all my family rent so nobody to do it for me) - so me and DC could move to the area my Dad and brother live and have a much nicer life than the one we have right now Sad

Sparklfairy · 14/08/2021 11:45

Agree @Ponoka7 which is why I put lighthearted. Considering it's imaginary anyway, you can imagine being grateful but also wondering 'what if I'd been so close yet so far being one number out' Smile
