It's not fucked, it's just blocked.

Using something like a chopstick will help break up the solid clump of damp salt that's in there now. Add hot water in bits to try to loosen it up. It might be necessary to take the drain hose off the outlet end in the morning and try to get water in from that side as well. Hold the pipe up, pour water down, wait and then put the hose into a bucket and then carry on from the dishwasher end as well - eventually, water and lumps of salt will start coming out.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/08/2021 21:42

Oh, and the chances are you can make it drain by pressing and holding the start button with the door closed. Most machines do that, anyhow.

Yesitsbess · 12/08/2021 21:43

Again. It's salt. It dissolves in hot water. It is not rice...

StarDrawers · 12/08/2021 21:45

Yes but a large clump of it needs time to dissolve or it is just hard lumps
StarDrawers · 12/08/2021 21:46

It's not like a fizzy paracetamol it's large clumps of salt

Mosaic123 · 12/08/2021 21:49

Put a hot cycle on in an empty dishwasher but have a peek at it every now and then. I think it will be OK.

Yesitsbess · 12/08/2021 21:51

That's why you just run a whole cycle. This is not my first rodeo...

Son emptied a KILO of it into a wet dishwasher (difficult to extricate). Ran it a couple of times and job jobbed.

chorizoTapas · 12/08/2021 21:52

@LemonSwan

Yes I have tried hot water Stars but then it just fills with water and its not draining and so I am wondering is it not draining because its not supposed to drain when off. Or is it fucked?!
Just run a cycle on it. It will be fine
Monestera · 12/08/2021 21:56

What’s your DP doing tonight?

Cuddlyrottweiler · 12/08/2021 21:56

I'd just run it, it's salt, it'll dissolve and wash away.

Azilliondegrees · 12/08/2021 22:00

I think it must have a pump to drain because the pipe attached to the u bend quite high up. It cant therefore be free draining. That means you’re going to have to switch it on but keep a close eye on it.

user1473878824 · 12/08/2021 22:25

@scrivette

Is there much? I dropped some in the bottom Of the dishwasher yesterday and just left it, it's not there now so presumably it dissolved during the wash.
I find it always leaves everything caked in something chalky which is why I rinse first just before doing a wash
DysmalRadius · 12/08/2021 23:09

Dishwashers get hot enough to sterilise stuff, so I would put it on for a cycle as that will be the optimum temperature that the drain is designed to handle. I would be surprised if the salt didn't allow enough of the water through to dissolve it relatively - it's only been poured in presumably rather than stuffed in with force?

Cheeseplantboots · 12/08/2021 23:16

I’ve spilt a whole bag in there before and just run it as normal.

pigsDOfly · 12/08/2021 23:17

Domestic dishwashers don't get hot enough to sterilise.

No, they dont.
LemonSwan · 12/08/2021 23:25

Oh jees! Sorry for the late reply, turned into quite the drama!

I started scooping it out then tried a lot of kettles and then stirring and having to scoop that out as it wouldnt drain.

Then the whole dishwasher started to corrode before my eyes so I thought best to wash it with Fairy Liquid.

That was a mistake and I couldnt scoop that.

So I decided to rinse and the whole dishwasher filled with foam - which I then bailed out into the sink.

2 more rinses and bails and I think the fairy liquid is gone, the water is drained and about to attempt an actual wash Grin

Fiddliestofsticks · 12/08/2021 23:28

Omg! I thought everyone knew never to put washing up liquid into a dishwasher. It's like a foam party from the drunken old days.

At least it has ended up ok!

pigsDOfly · 12/08/2021 23:34

Yes, the Fairy Liquid was probably not the best idea.

I once accidently put a laundry tab in the dishwasher instead of the dishwasher tablet.

It didn't dissolve properly and I found it, slightly melted round the edges, sitting on top of a plate.

LemonSwan · 13/08/2021 00:45

Haha in hindsight it was stupid but had a good laugh during.

At least it wasn't a literal flood!

1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor · 13/08/2021 02:48

Dishwashers do indeed have a pump and will only drain out the water at specific times during the chosen cycle (after pre wash, after main wash and after rinsing)

Every dishwasher that I've bought has had an anti flood device built in, so it won't flood the kitchen.

DysmalRadius · 13/08/2021 03:40

What?! All the jam making websites say you can sterilise jars in a dishwasher!! Is it a conspiracy to knobble my jams?!??

cheeseychovolate · 13/08/2021 04:38

Someone told me that if you spill dishwasher salt on the inside of the dishwasher you must not leave it there as it'll start to corrode the dishwasher, so you must do a was straight away to avoid corrosion.

Get a baby bottle steriliser?

But yeah dishwasher isn't sterile.
