What tiny things have you done to specifically annoy someone?

My Mil came from a pretty wealthy family and definitely saw herself as a 'cut above' most people.
So I always used to chop carrots into rounds when she came for a meal as I knew she thought it was 'common'; posh people always cut carrots into sticks.
It was a tiny thing but it gave me so much pleasure over the years.Grin
Can anyone beat passive-aggressive cooked carrots?
@hellywelly3 why? Your mother in law has a preferred mug and she's supplied it. Just use it if you're making her a drink? What point are you trying to make?

I'm literally 🤷‍♀️ at most of these. The tangled phone wire is amusing. The rest just serve to highlight that a lot of people are very strange indeed.
I have china mugs all immaculately clean but she said mine weren’t good enough quality for her so insisted I kept one of hers for her visits. I thought that was really rude so I always just make her drink in my inferior mugs.

Whenever someone tailgates me on a one-lane road, I decrease the speed the more they tailgate me. In most cases people get the hint and actually back off. But one time a van driver was extremely impatient and simply wouldn't get off my tail. I was driving very slowly indeed to annoy him. And to my luck, it was a long road, too, so he had no option but to "enjoy" the long, slow drive. At some point he got so annoyed that he honked his horn continueously, and I could see in my mirror that he was making aggressive gestures. Including giving me the finger Grin

I so regret I didn't roll my window down and give him the finger back...

MaMelon · 12/08/2021 13:03

Genuine question - why on earth do people do this? If a driver is annoying you just pull in or indicate and move over and in a bit and let them get on with their lives as you get on with yours. All this ridiculous slowing down - you don't do anything more that make yourself look like a prat as you slow down not just the driver behind you but everyone behind them as well.

Bythemillpond · 12/08/2021 13:06

I was driving through an area that is 20mph everywhere
There was a police car behind me and I could see in my rear view mirror they were getting really agitated. I could almost head them shouting for me to go a little faster. I was doing exactly 20 mph.
I just found it funny that even the police were frustrated by the ridiculous 20mph rule on a road that wasn’t frequented by pedestrians

We often go away with the in laws, on holiday, they are quite tight and hate eating out, I make a point of suggesting restaurants that I know my DH will want to go too, even though I'm more than happy to eat in ....winds the MIL up no end

"I don't understand. Why would you even want to go anywhere with them, let alone go away with them regularly? Why? One episode of tightness and I'd never go anywhere with them again. I don't don't understand why you reward them by doing this."

Apart from being tight, they are good company. And I think it's important to keep family relationships for the GC and my DH loves spending time with his dad. But MIL does annoy me with her tightness along with other food issues ( I suspect she might have a eating disorder) ... especially as we always pay for the holiday as well.

It's not about drivers being annoying, it's about drivers driving very aggressively and way over the speed limit. It's really dangerous, and they have no right to tailgate other drivers that are doing what they are supposed to: following the speed limits.

And so why on earth didn't you just pull in and let them go ahead and worry about their own licences? Confused

These ridiculous 20mph rules on A roads and at times that don't warrant them drive me demented - at 7am on my morning commute when I'm the only car on the road I ignore them and I don't care.

So pull in or indicate, slow down and move in so they can pass you. If a driver is spending their time looking in their rear view mirror to see how close another driver is to them and then slowing down and speeding up to try and wind the other driver up then they're an idiot who isn't paying attention to what's ahead.

I see no reason why I should have to do any of that for an aggressive driver. If he doesn't have patience for sharing the road with other people and adhering by its rules like the rest of us, he shouldn't be driving in the first place.

I like to think I prevented him from potentially running someone over. If that makes me an idiot, so be it. I'd rather be an idiot than an idiot and a half.

On holiday, my MIL, who trained at the School of Tight Wads, will declare in the restaurant that 'no-one is having starters'. So we all order starters. Ditto with the pudding... we all have pudding......her pleasure comes from being as frugal with money as possible, to the extent that she classes a packet of biscuits back at the holiday home 'pudding'. And yes... the Poundland specials biscuits are brought from home and packed tightly away in the suitcases to be dispensed when she sees fit.

Our pleasure comes from not having to cook and to enjoy our food whilst on holiday. All three courses..... Grin

MaMelon · 12/08/2021 13:33

30mph an empty A road (that used to be 30 until a few months ago when our council decided to implement this strange arbitary limit wedged between a 50 and a 60) at 7am instead of 20? Yep, guilty as charged.

Driving with your foot on and off the accelerator whilst staring into your rear view mirror is far more idiotic. Just pull in if you can - don't play silly games whilst looking at the car behind you.

I have a tiny gadget the size of my thumb that beeps and chirps at random intervals. Its sole purpose is to annoy people. The sound is short and irregular so the gadget is difficult to locate. When DH annoys me I turn it on and hide it somewhere. Been doing it for ten years and he’s never found it yet. He was particularly puzzled when we moved house and the mysterious chirp came with us!
Holy shit balls. Please tell me what this is, I NEED one in my life!!
SugarCaneHarvest · 12/08/2021 13:51

By playing games with tail-gaters you are putting yourself and any passengers in your vehicle massively at risk. So many fatal accidents are caused by people dangerously attempting to overtake slow moving traffic. Tailgaters tend to be rash, unskilled and impetuous drivers.

Whilst they may be infuriating, far safer to either stick to the speed limit or pull over and let them pass. Far better to be alive than prove a point.

I did that once, with a police car behind me, but I don't think they got agitated. I was blue flashed once, by an unmarked car, for overtaking while ON the speed limit on a motorway, though. Probably a cabinet minister. GrinAngry

I also do the slow down and pull up when I got a tail gater. I don't do it to annoy them, though. Just to assertively keep a safe distance between them and me. If you tail gate me, I will keep a longer (and safer) distance from the car in front of me to make sure I can break more slowly and you don't crash against me.

Lweji · 12/08/2021 13:55

Also, brake, not break Blush - I swear I know the difference.

There's no room for tailgaters to overtake other drivers on a one-lane road, though. They are literally stuck behind you. So I don't see how it's more dangerous to slow down for them.

The idea that a driver spends his entire time looking in the mirrors at the tailgater behind them is also ridiculous and not true at all. So therefore an invalid reason to be classified as a "dangerous driver". You're supposed to look in your mirrors regularly. At least in my country, that's what we are taught.

Mamamamasaurus · 12/08/2021 14:14

If DH is being a dick, I'll wait until he plays music on Google Home and then randomly pause it when he's too far away for her to hear him clearly. Or I'll change the music to Kate Bush, Wuthering Heights, at maximum volume.

I used to work with some seriously annoying, egotistical pricks. I'd wait patiently for one of them to use the PC opposite mine (call centre, desks divided by partitions) and use the extra mouse I had stashed behind my screen. It was plugged into their PC and moved the cursor as well as the one they were using. There were days I would spend 8 of my 12 hour shift playing that game. Just a subtle nudge every so often was enough to send them nuts. I overheard one of them telling another that the PC 'had a mind of its own'

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/08/2021 14:17

I won't play games with tail gaters , Id much rather have them in front of me .

The ones that piss me off are the Mid Lane Hoggers .
I was on a motorway that was ununusually quiet , but one driver just sat in the middle , refusing to shift even with other cars going up behind him (it was a Him, I got DS to look) and giving a headlight flash
Many gaps in the left between lorries . I think he was just listening to music in his own little bubble .Hmm

No - but there are generally passing places. Either way, you're deliberating holding up other drivers by purposely slowing down - I cannot fathom why anyone would think this isn't ridiculous behaviour. Tailgating is awful too, no doubt about that, but to speed up and slow down (someone on here somewhere - can't find it now - mentioned they reward the tailgater who pulls back by speeding up and then slowing down when they get too close again) whilst looking in your rear view mirror? Nope - just carry on driving at the correct speed and let them go ahead asap.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/08/2021 14:28

An aggressive trainee (probably a bit of Cocaine use involved at the weekends as he was worst on Monday and Tuesday) tended to swear and kick at the computer cables and desk next to me when he was struggling with a comedown 30 second start up time.

After several weeks of never knowing when there would be this explosion next to me (and nobody believed me when I said he was really volatile and unnerving to be in the same office with), I decided I needed to know when it was going to happen, so disconnected his computer every morning in a slightly different way (one day monitor at the base unit, another at the back of the monitor, another the power supplies, another at the plug, keyboard, mouse, etc), then when he stomped off to shout at IT - who were in on this - I'd reconnect it, so if they came down, all that would happen is that they'd switch it on and it would work perfectly. And if they didn't, he'd have to go somewhere else, at which point he'd come back after sitting in a glorified cupboard for four hours to find somebody else happily using the computer he couldn't ever get to work first time.

I disagree with your arguments, but at least we agree that tailgating is unacceptable.
SugarCaneHarvest · 12/08/2021 14:33

@DelphineMarineaux Tailgaters are by nature impatient people - if you wind them up further by deliberately slowing down you are going to have an an angry, impatient driver who may not cause an accident behind you but may cause one further down the road. The ripple effect. Maybe I am sensitive as I live in an area of narrow, windy country and coastal roads with so so many fatal accidents. The traffic is something I would never play with.

MaMelon · 12/08/2021 14:41

Of course - I don't think anyone would argue otherwise. However, the way you deal with tailgaters is important for road safety. As SugarCaneHarvest rightly says, winding them up is likely to cause a ripple effect, whether that's further down the road - or behind them when you create a line of frustrated drivers by slowing down even further. It seems very controlling behaviour to look in your mirror and think 'right, I'm going to play a game with you, I'm going to wind you up right up and slow you down even further'. Just keep a steady speed and let them go in front of you as soon as you can - that way you can see them in front of you, you reduce the risk of future accidents and traffic keeps flowing at the speed it should be.
