For context, I live abroad in a beautiful place that relies heavily on tourism for its income. Majority of people born and bred here have been hit hard financially by covid, very hard, they don’t have the same benefits etc as they do in U.K., businesses have been closing and people really really struggling.
The covid figures are fairly low, everything has opened back up for summer.

This morning I took my toddler Dd to a local
hotel soft play, it’s part of a huge water park, packed with holiday makers. We went into the quiet part and had a nice morning, all was fine.
Dp texted at lunch asking what we were up to etc, normal lunchtime text, I told him where we’d been and he said to be very careful as the hotel and water park is full of staff who’ve tested positive for covid 🤷🏻‍♀️I had no idea, he told me his colleagues wife works there and told his colleague that they’re trying to keep it quiet at the hotel/water park so that it doesn’t get closed down again (has been closed down so many times before) he said wife is negative but tests every other day and all the workers (including her) desperately need their jobs.
I’m hoping we’re ok as I literally sat on a chair outside watching her and didn’t order a drink from the bar staff etc.
There are so so many holiday makers there, albeit mainly young families and kids, due to the water park, but, this is wrong, isn’t it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Extremely wrong yes

Doodlebug71 · 09/08/2021 14:24

It is wrong, but you'll no doubt get people insisting that things must go back to normal and so on. Yes, they must, but we really needed to hang on and make sure everyone was vaccinated, so that everyone stands a better chance of fighting this off if they contract it. One of my neighbours has a daughter who works in ICU. Most of the ICU beds are occupied by CV patients. The majority of those are youngish. 30-40 years old.

I don't envy you one bit, OP.

NinaBallerinaShoes · 09/08/2021 14:25

You don’t know if that is true. It’s gossip.

AtticusHoysAnus · 09/08/2021 14:25

Well yes of course it's wrong.

Savannahnanana · 09/08/2021 14:28

It's never a good idea to listen to or spread gossip.Don't go back if it made you uncomfortable but don't take hearsay as gospel. It could be a rumour started by a competitor.

Allthegoodnamesgoneffs · 09/08/2021 14:28

Sorry, worded it wrong, of course it’s wrong, I meant to ask, would you do anything about it 🤷🏻‍♀️like what, though or leave it.
I also believe things do have to get back to normal and I most definitely feel for all the workers etc, but then I think of all the many people I saw walking around, I just don’t know. I wish he’d never told me anything!

I also have a lot of mum friends living here obviously wanting to take their kids there at some point during the holidays

MiddleParking · 09/08/2021 14:30

I mean, it would be wrong if it’s true. Your DP sounds a bit credulous though.

MiddleParking · 09/08/2021 14:31

Oh - no, you can’t do anything about it.

Allthegoodnamesgoneffs · 09/08/2021 14:31

@Savannahnanana The info has come from our friend and dps colleagues wife, who works there, she just told her Dh, who mentioned it to Dp after he said I’d taken Dd there to play. So she wants to keep it quiet (she needs her job) but was passing on to us to say don’t go. Isn’t gossip as she works there and knows about all the staff.

OP posts:
DrinkFeckArseBrick · 09/08/2021 14:33

Yes it's wrong, from a point of view of spreading the disease, from a point of view of probably breaking local laws, and from a point of view of ruining peoples holidays - if they test positive on their pre return pcr test the whole family will have to isolate in one of those quarantine hotel rooms with no access to fresh air for at least 10 days. Surely there are local procedures in place to report and then the local council can investigate as they see fit

Allthegoodnamesgoneffs · 09/08/2021 14:39

@DrinkFeckArseBrick I didn’t even think of the holiday makers on their return 😬

SnackSizeRaisin · 09/08/2021 14:40

Sounds a bit hysterical to me. Children aren't at risk from covid particularly, and as the virus is going to be with us forever they are going to be exposed at some point. Presumably clinically vulnerable people won't go to a soft play centre. If you are worried, it's probably best to stick to outdoor spaces and not buy food from cafés or restaurants.
I mean obviously people should be sticking to the rules about testing and isolating, but that is more about keeping infection levels down to reduce pressure on health services, rather than about risk to individuals

canigooutyet · 09/08/2021 14:42

There's nothing to say really. If people are hanging out at a busy place it's up to them to take whatever precautions to protect themselves.

SnackSizeRaisin · 09/08/2021 14:44

All the staff presumably live in the area, visit local shops and pubs, have partners and children. The outbreak is therefore a community one, not confined to one particular venue.

Allthegoodnamesgoneffs · 09/08/2021 14:45

@SnackSizeRaisin I was at a play part inside the hotel, it’s a hotel attached to a huge water park.

OP posts:
Allthegoodnamesgoneffs · 09/08/2021 14:46

@SnackSizeRaisin It’s true, it just seems bonkers that so many staff have covid and are just working there potentially just passing it around

OP posts:
canigooutyet · 09/08/2021 14:46

And the holiday makers - you would have to be incredibly dense to not understand that there is a risk of coming into contact with someone who has the virus whether it's at the hotel, a restaurant, the airport, shuttles and plane. There risk is reduced of course as most would have. had the vaccine to be able to have all the freedoms of being on holiday.

Allthegoodnamesgoneffs · 09/08/2021 14:52

@canigooutyet It’s true, but I still wouldn’t expect the majority of staff serving me to have covid, tbh it freaked me out a bit

OP posts:
itsgettingwierd · 09/08/2021 14:56

If it's rife in the hotel it won't stay secret for long.

When guests have to PCR test to fly home - if there's an unusual high number then it'll be obvious that it's in the hotel and likely staff and guests.

I do feel for hospitality owners worldwide. It's such a difficult situation and then they lose money and have to pay out more for deep clean.

canigooutyet · 09/08/2021 15:00

It will be the same in England soon. Potentially those with the virus still working as they will no longer be required to test if they have had both vaccines.

Geamhradh · 09/08/2021 15:05

I was told on Saturday that someone I know is "at death's door" after a reaction to his Covid vaccine.
Oddly, I met him about an hour later and he flew to Panama yesterday.
There is so much "ooooh mass breakout of Covid at X restaurant and Y nightclub" I don't believe any of it any more. Especially as I'm in a country which is pretty heavily regulated.

Geamhradh · 09/08/2021 15:07

If your dp's colleague's wife works there, then presumably your dp's colleague should also be testing/isolating and arguably so should your dp.

The holiday makers have chosen to take the risk and sit in an airport and aeroplane and be served by the locals.

If there are no benefits, no government support these people have No Choice.

Posters on here need to be careful, pontifying from ivory towers.

lljkk · 09/08/2021 15:19

What are the rules where you are, OP about exposure & isolating?
I don't care what uK rules say, what are the rules where you are?

One day we will have to treat covid like any other common cold virus.
