Hi all,

Wanted to know if IABU for being peed off/demoralised at this message from the owner of the company I work for.

Basically started the job in Jan & it has been 100% remote due to Covid/office closed etc. Since the restrictions have lifted I have been in and met colleagues but continued to wfh as do 75% of the company. There has been talk of us never having to go back in full time and people can choose what to do. Nothing formal has been announced. If we do want to go in we have had to book in. However the other day this was posted on our internal comms site;

"While booking is now no longer required, we are noting who turns up. Expect those that do to get the best opportunities and progression. It's obvious that being 'front and centre' means you are top of mind. We've always been a company that prioritises what you do and achieve over simple time served, this is just one aspect of that."

What are your thoughts? To me that is saying if you dont come in you will not be given the opportunities....

Lots of the staff arent local and live all over the country/world. A few of my colleagues are miffed but some friends have said all companies are like this?

WFH suits many people. For example, my DH no longer has a 3-hour round trip, goes out for appointments all the time, such as dental and goes out for local lunches, all on the same money. That’s great for him.

However, as a customer I’m sick of speaking to people at home who don’t have full access to the info I need, or whose WFI is playing up and can’t help me. The other day I was on an important call and the person suddenly went off the phone to shout at her child to stop doing something.

Sorry, but many people WFH are having their cake and eat it and are now complaining they aren’t being promoted. Entitled or what?

I so agree with this ^^
Ringing large organisations who would normally have a call centre is such a lottery these days. The service has definitely deteriorated.

Maybe if employers didn’t make their places such shit places to work, then people wouldn’t want to wfh so much.

Maybe if this government invested indecent public transport, and made it easier to get to work, people wouldn’t want to wfh so much.

Maybe, with better public transport, businesses would have more options in terms of where to locate, making it easier for employees to get to work and…. People wouldn’t want to wfh so much!!

I think it’s telling that people are so cynical when it comes to WFH. What’s that phrase “it takes one to know one”? They imagine people slacking when WFH because it’s what they would do.

Depends if the job was flexible/wfh beforehand. If it was and they’re suddenly demanding that you come into work then that’s off. However, if people started to wfh completely/more often due to covid and are now expecting that to carry on even when things are getting back to normal then I think it’s fair enough.

Realistically like… wfh is a massive luxury and has been throughout this entire thing. It wouldn’t be for me although I’ve never done it so I can’t be sure but I think I’d just go mad - I don’t envy those who have had to.

Or, just a thought, those company has had 18 months to make improvements and hasn't done.

Do you really believe people who wfh shouldn't get promoted, ever?

Not sure how it's entitled to expect a promotion opportunity to based I performance, not which building you are sat in.

At least they are honest about it and making it objective.

There are lots of soft benefits from having a team mix regularly, so it is not unreasonable to say that if you come into the office then that is part of helping the organisation as a whole function well.

They are not saying no opportunities, just that it will count in the favour of those who go in.
