My life, such as it is is on my mobile. Gave in and ran update, which took forever. Oops, my data has now been hacked. Being completely non-techy I don’t know what to do. What have they given out to hackers? How do I find out? I’ve got banking and HMRC stuff on here.

MattHancocksSexTape · 08/08/2021 20:05

What update did you do?

pinkflask · 08/08/2021 20:06

How do you know your data has been hacked?

PlanDeRaccordement · 08/08/2021 20:07

Apple wouldn’t have given data to hackers. Do you not have any security on your phone? VPN? encryption?

Muddydoor · 08/08/2021 20:13

@PlanDeRaccordement huh? Security? No, did you not read my OP? I am not techy. I have an iPhone, I expect it to look after my data.

I had done the ipdate because I told dd she could have netflix. Dowloaded netflix message apparently from apple appeared saying there had been a data leak…

The only real way your data would have been hacked is if you’ve used an authorised update (which I’m not entirely sure is possible with Apple) or handed out your details by accident via a spam/ phishing text or email. Are you sure you’ve actually been hacked or just had a phishing text/email telling you so?

ConstanceGracy · 08/08/2021 20:14

Eh? This makes no sense .

xoJellyBean · 08/08/2021 20:15

I just did the same update. How do you know? I've had nothing.

Kitchendilemmas · 08/08/2021 20:16

Was there a link in this message OP? And did you click on it?

I've never heard of this before.

FlyingRabbitsAtNoon · 08/08/2021 20:17

Did it actually say you’ve been hacked or that your password is insecure?

citycitycity · 08/08/2021 20:18

Did you get an email or text, if so it’s a scam

ChequerBoard · 08/08/2021 20:18

I think you need to calm down. What did the message actually say? Was it just one of the ones that advise you to change your password because it may have been part of a data leak?

In which just change the password and stop being a diva.

peacelily3 · 08/08/2021 20:18

Do you mean when you go into saved passwords on settings it mentions changing password as potential risk ?

pinkflask · 08/08/2021 20:18

There is a warning which can come up sometimes that a password you use for a website has been involved in a data leak and therefore you might want to change said password. This is NOT anything to do with Apple or your phone and doesn’t mean your phone is compromised at all.

ProfessorInkling · 08/08/2021 20:19

Can you post a screenshot - provided it does not show your personal info.

Or the exact text and the format it was in - a notification, an email?

FlyingRabbitsAtNoon · 08/08/2021 20:19

Apple are actually quite security savvy and will let you know (with some of the newer updates - not sure which IOS you started from) that a password isn’t strong enough - which may be what you are seeing?

icedcoffees · 08/08/2021 20:20

What did you update? The phone or the Netflix app? Did you do it via the App Store or via a dodgy link in an email or text?

Downloading an official Apple update won't cause a data leak.

Lockheart · 08/08/2021 20:21

I have an iPhone, I expect it to look after my data.

Your iPhone is an inanimate object, your data is your responsibility.

If you are "not techy" then keeping your entire life on tech is supremely ill-advised.

What exactly did you click on, where did you find it, and what was the warning message?

nannynick · 08/08/2021 20:21

Could it be that Apple are checking email addresses you enter to access things against known lists of leaked email/passwords? It then warns you that your email address appears on a data leak, so to change your password for that service unless you have already done so since the data leak.

nannynick · 08/08/2021 20:23

This may help explain the message you got.

adagio · 08/08/2021 20:24

That sounds like the pop up which warns you your password in app xyz has been in a security data breach, suggesting you change it.

Bugger all to do with apple and helpful of them to mention it!

Apple are actually exceptionally secure by design, which is one if the reasons I like them.

ApolloandDaphne · 08/08/2021 20:27

My DH is a big wig in global security. If I get messages saying my password has appeared in a data leak he just shrugs and tells me to change my password. It's not really a big deal and doesn't mean you have been hacked. Just change your passwords.

cinammonbuns · 08/08/2021 20:28

I’m confused if it’s a text or email then definitely spam or a scam. If you are using a password to login to something then Apple was telling you your password has been comprised meaning another company (not Apple) had a data leak and the password is available to scammers so scammers will be Abel to log into that account for that company. Your iPhone itself is not hacked. The account you were trying to log into is compromised a story email and password for that account is on the internet for scammers to use if they so pleased.

cinammonbuns · 08/08/2021 20:29

@adagio yeah you explained it more concisely.

Clymene · 08/08/2021 20:31

I think you've misunderstood. And you can set your updates to run overnight so they don't impact you

userxx · 08/08/2021 20:36

@peacelily3

Do you mean when you go into saved passwords on settings it mentions changing password as potential risk ?

I think it could be this too. I was quite alarmed when I first saw it.
