Aibu? I mean … I guess it must be a stylised letter M, but …

@greenalltheway

Why is ET on a Hereford church?
Because if he flashed his fanjo on a spaceship he might’ve offended someone.Grin
JaneJeffer · 08/08/2021 17:32

@EverybodyIsInteresting

Where in Edinburgh is it? I know someone that might be interested...
In doing what?
MuddyStiletto · 08/08/2021 17:54

Why are posters saying other posters are offended? No one has said that
They have just stated that they think it's in bad taste
Perfectly valid

EverybodyIsInteresting · 08/08/2021 18:01

In doing what?

Ummm... what makes you think he'd be 'doing' something? Don't worry, I don't think they'll be robbing it or dancing on it. And they may well know of it already.

Treacletoots · 08/08/2021 18:04

Well it wouldn't be the first. Once researching content for s previous job I came across a lady who had her lady parts immortalised as part of her headstone. Apparently so that her husband wouldn't stray after death.

Yours totally looks like a bend over shot. I can't think what else it would be?

UnitedWire · 08/08/2021 18:21

Wow, @Treacletoots!

I’m honestly torn between thinking (1) “surely they would never have done this deliberately — it must be accidental” and (2) “surely at least one person must have realised how it looks — it must be deliberate”.

And I can sort of imagine a scenario in which someone commissioned it deliberately, but relied on there being multiple ways of viewing it and on everyone else being either too innocent/oblivious to “see” the daring one, or too polite to say anything.

Anyway, all speculation of course.

@EverybodyIsInteresting, is the person you know doing something academic along these lines?

Ah, I see. Well, it was very generous of them to go to the trouble of letting me know.

They’re very welcome to go and hang out on threads they like better.

Yes, honestly, I understood your point Muddy. Fair enough, people have different opinions about what’s in bad taste.

My AIBU was more about whether the symbol is reminiscent of a fanjo, and I think there’s a range of opinions on that, all of which I am finding interesting.

EverybodyIsInteresting · 08/08/2021 19:01

Nobody has said they are offended, that's true.

One or two very much make it seem like they are. But they didn't state it explicitly, so you are absolutely correct. Nobody actually said it.

MuddyStiletto · 08/08/2021 19:05

Then blur the names as previously suggested 🙄 it's not difficult @UnitedWire

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 08/08/2021 19:06

That's purely pornographic! Hilarious.

DinosApple · 08/08/2021 19:08

I've seen stylised Ms which look very similar, and that fits with the first few surnames.

Ah now Sheila na gigs, they cannot be anything else. Kilpeck Church in Herefordshire (I think) has some amazing carvings.

LanaDelBoy · 08/08/2021 19:15

I can't unsee it either! The little indents on either side suggest it MUST be intentional...?!

Muddy fgs, I’m not going to get the photo of a historic tombstone in a busy public location taken down and repost it with blurred names, on the basis of a few people’s opinions about this light-hearted discussion of a carved symbol on it being in poor taste.

If I thought it looked like something else, a surprising cultural symbol maybe, would that be in poor taste? No, it’s only because fanjos have been mentioned and a glimmer of humour is involved that anyone’s getting aerated about taste. Which is really silly. And IMO slightly sad.

I’ve acknowledged your opinion politely but it’s not one I agree with. Nor was it the point of the thread so please knock it off with the “it’s not difficult” rubbish.

Why? Because you said so?

Postitmug · 08/08/2021 19:51

Marvellous OP! Without doubt, a fanjo Grin

Bonus points for enraging all the joyless prudes trying to protect the identity of those on the gravestone. Imagine being outed so humiliatingly whilst trying to enjoy one's second or third century of eternal rest.

MuddyStiletto · 08/08/2021 19:52

@UnitedWire it's about the symbol, so just blur the names..I have made my point
I'm on board for any piss take but not one about memorials
You don't know whether is cultural or personal, it doesn't matter
It's distasteful to take the mick

Wingedharpy · 08/08/2021 20:00

I wonder if it is just something as simple as the stonemason dying before he finished it?
Compared to the ornate swirly things on the side (you can tell I'm an expert with the terminology), the carving under discussion looks a bit crude/basic/unfinished.
Or maybe the family ran out of money and just paid for what was done up to that point?

It goes to show there’s no rest for the wicked! Wink
UnitedWire · 08/08/2021 20:18

Muddy, in my earlier posts I’ve explained I’m not just “taking the mick”. This symbol is in a public place, it’s unusual and looks slightly racy, so it raised a smile. That’s not hurting or insulting anyone or invading anyone’s privacy. There’s literally no reason to blur out the names on the stone.

You are not the final arbiter of taste and nor am I obviously, it’s subjective and context-dependent. Not sure why you keep saying “just blur the names”.

You can feel differently of course but you are mischaracterising the post by insisting it’s a cynical piss-take.

It’s clearly a dentist’s tombstone and this is a stylised molar Grin

(Or a tasteful feminist depiction of a 300yo fanjo.)
