Aibu? I mean … I guess it must be a stylised letter M, but …

In fact all the names have ‘OO’ in them. That would be my guess, something to do with that.

UnitedWire · 08/08/2021 14:46
I think it could be a luckenbooth - a 17th century Scottish symbol of love, depicting two entwined hearts.
I first came across this in a novel by Jenni Fagan - see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luckenbooth_brooch
Oh that’s a good shout, thank you. Although the flat cut-off base doesn’t seem typical, going by the ones pictured at that link — but even so.

It’s not actually very weathered, it’s quite well defined against the surface (the logo as opposed to the lettering). It may look a bit more weathered in my pic because I’ve zoomed in so the definition’s not great.

@LaurieFairyCake

On that 'Has Mumsnet changed' thread people were going on about the permanently offended (at literally nothing)
It’s depressing isn’t it? There should be a special forum on Mumsnet for the Easily Offended, the Perpetually Offended, and those poor souls determined to spend their one wild precious life Desperately Seeking Reasons to be Offended. My sense of humour isn’t everyone’s cup of chai so I spend a lot of time corpsing. Grin

I think that headstone’s hilarious! There are some funny things set in stone in cemeteries across the world, many are intentional. Clearly the dead have more of humour in them than people who claim to be living.

TeaAndStrumpets · 08/08/2021 14:58

@ChainJane

Finally, a proper "let's mock the dead!" thread. Obviously it's fine because they died ages ago so it doesn't matter that they were people's relatives. The cut-off for being funny is 30 years, so it's fine to laugh at Hillsborough victims but not quite OK to mock Freddie Mercury - roll on 24th November, I've got a shit load of material ready.
I have a sense of humour but perhaps it has failed me in this case. Is it for a Spot the Naughty Tombstone feature in the Sun?

Yes, poor taste.

Port1aCastis · 08/08/2021 15:00

Sorry but I think this is in very bad taste

ThreeWitches · 08/08/2021 15:01

It absolutely looks like someone bent over

OldTinHat · 08/08/2021 15:05

OP, thank you for sharing - I am so insisting that engraving goes on my headstone! Love it! 🤭

mogtheexcellent · 08/08/2021 15:08

I spent years recording gravestones. Never seen a fanjo one Grin

Some people have no sense of humour.

MuddyStiletto · 08/08/2021 15:10

@kurtney

I agree I'm all for a laugh but they are peoples loved ones

While I agree with the sentiment, the dates on there are late 1700's and 1800's. I doubt anyone who is alive today would even know they're related to these people.

I disagree, I know where my relatives headstones are I'm not offended in the least but this is a piss taking thread, and in bad taste Have some respect
Wingedharpy · 08/08/2021 15:13

@PurpleCuckoo : I've never heard of Sheela Na Gigs but have just Googled it.
Not the prettiest of carvings methinks!

EverybodyIsInteresting · 08/08/2021 15:16

If you think this is in poor taste, you should see the carvings they have in Hereford churches...

SmallPrawnEnergy · 08/08/2021 15:17

Yup bent over I see it. Could it be two tombstones sort of overlapping like a Venn diagram?

I wouldn’t say this was mocking the dead nothing about the post is personal to the person(s) in the grave, merely a comment on a carving on said gravestone. If Freddie Mercury had something akin to genitals on his you believe people would be passing comment too.

UnitedWire · 08/08/2021 15:44

I came away from yesterday’s walk with a head full of unfamiliar place names and things/people I wanted to look up. Some of the stones at Grange are very moving. The logo on this one startled us/made us laugh, and there’s nothing wrong with that. In many years of walking through historic graveyards it’s not something I’ve come across before, so I shared because it raised a smile and also genuinely mystified us.

It’s not “a piss-taking thread”.

Also fwiw, these large, costly Victorian monuments in urban garden cemeteries were not primarily intended for the benefit of private mourners. They were public statements of identity/status and now they are part of the urban fabric. That context matters, I think. I’m a member of a local group advocating for the preservation of a similar cemetery on my side of the city — I’d say the neglect of some of these spaces by owners/council over the decades is a lot more of an outrage than me finding this fanjo logo a bit funny.

What's going on in Hereford @EverybodyIsInteresting?
Positively pornographic!Grin

fluffedup · 08/08/2021 15:48

@Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly

Yeah, I can see it.

Tbh, the worst tombstone I saw was a quite recent one. Someone had been a dear husband and father and the quote said "We wish you could of lived longer"

I marvelled at the incompetence of the person who took the order, and of the person engraving it.

Yes, I remember reading about someone who had died in terrible tragic circumstances, there was a picture of his family at the graveside and there was a similar inscription. The picture was in a magazine - surely someone at some point must have noticed it?
greenalltheway · 08/08/2021 15:48

Why is ET on a Hereford church?

Wingedharpy · 08/08/2021 15:53

Or could it be a case of:
Stonemason to apprentice "Carve something lad, representing regina"......

Amrapaali · 08/08/2021 15:57

Agree with @ThreeWitches looks like someone bent over. I can see a bum and top half of the thighs

CarpeVitam · 08/08/2021 16:48

@Port1aCastis

Sorry but I think this is in very bad taste
Why click on it then? ! 🤷‍♀️🙄

Amazing really that people can get offended over this. It’s making fun of weird pictures on headstones - not the dead

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/08/2021 17:02

@Inthesameboatatmo

Yes I can see it op , it even has a clit Shock
a rare find for sure
Spaceman1 · 08/08/2021 17:05

I think it might be the family crest...

BSintolerant · 08/08/2021 17:19

I think it looks more cloven than crested Spaceman! Grin
