What do you consider your nationality to be?

Do you think it’s where you’re born? Or your parentage? Or your grandparentage?

For example, if you were born in Scotland, but your mum was Russian and your dad Venezuelan, what would you class yourself as?

Someone I know says they’re Irish because they have an Irish grandparent, but how far do you got back? AIBU to think only a couple of generations defines your nationality? Or do you think it can be longer?

And how much does it mean to you? I’m generally curious, I live in a place where locals are very fierce about their roots and I am a bit of a mongrol from my heritage and it’s never really bothered me, I just say ‘British’ because I was born and live here.

Welsh. Always will be. (Lived in Wales all my childhood, moved to England for uni and never returned) but I am welsh and all my family live there still.

OddBoots · 07/08/2021 20:50

I would love to say European but that isn't really an option for me any more,so British.

TheScottishPlay · 07/08/2021 20:51

Scottish.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/08/2021 21:01

@GogLais

Welsh and British, but more importantly, a Gog.
I am half Gog . 50% Llefrith 50% llaeth....
Mistlewoeandwhine · 07/08/2021 21:10

I call myself N.Irish although I am only 3/4 so and all my grandparents were born pre-partition, because I was born there. I also identify as British although again some would argue about that, however it is the culture I was raised in.
I can’t stand Plastic Paddies who are third/fourth generation Irish and think it’s cool to support terrorists. I feel hatred for them.

I know what you mean. I too considered myself to be European. Sad
Port1aCastis · 07/08/2021 21:13

Cornish/ British

Rainyday4321 · 07/08/2021 21:24

Nationalities British and Irish

I consider myself British European- best describes the biggest influences in my life.

QueenB5 · 07/08/2021 21:31

I consider myself to be British, I am from Northern Ireland. I’m pissed with Boris for basically throwing us under a bus regarding Brexit but I am still British first, Northern Irish second.

MrsFin · 07/08/2021 21:32

As Europe isn't a nation yet "European" can't be a nationality.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/08/2021 21:46

Ffs😂. You are all still Europeans. As pp said it's nkt nationality. European has never been nationality.
Do you think Swiss aren't europeans? Do you think Montenegrians aren't European? Or Belorussians. Norway? Ukraine? Or all the countries joining in 2004 weren't Euaopean before that?
😁 Chill.

CutePanda · 07/08/2021 21:48

@AntiFlag For example, if you were born in Scotland, but your mum was Russian and your dad Venezuelan, what would you class yourself as?

Your nationality would be Scottish/British. However, ethnicity is different. If your mum is full Russian and dad full Venezuelan then you would be half Russian and half Venezuelan, but your nationality is Scottish/British (British born, British passport).

Someone I know says they’re Irish because they have an Irish grandparent, but how far do you got back? AIBU to think only a couple of generations defines your nationality? Or do you think it can be longer?

No, they are NOT Irish. I’d only count whatever your parents are. If your dad is half Irish half English and your mum is English, then you would be 3/4 English and 1/4 Irish.

Violinist64 · 07/08/2021 21:57

@CutePanda “If your dad is half Irish and half English and your mum is English, then you would be 3/4 English and 1/4 Irish.” In other words, English, unless you were born in Ireland, which would make you Irish.

CutePanda · 07/08/2021 21:58

@randomsabreuse I'd like to consider myself European if that were still possible!

That minimises and shows ignorance towards the different cultures in Europe. The French are different to the Polish. The Portuguese are different to the Norwegians.

That’s like lumping all the nationalities/ethnicities in Asia together. East Asians are very different (racially and culturally) to the Arabs etc.

Yes. If you were born in England then your nationality is English. I roll my eyes when people say they’re Irish or whatever just because their great granddad was Irish.

maddiemookins16mum · 07/08/2021 22:01

English. I had rather a heated debate with my brother about this years ago, he said I’m British, not English. I argued back that how come it’s fine to say proudly that you’re Scottish or Welsh but not ok just to be English.

CutePanda · 07/08/2021 22:03

@Port1aCastis

Cornish/ British
Cornwall isn’t a country. You are English.
Deadringer · 07/08/2021 22:04

Irish. 100%

AngryWhompingWillow · 07/08/2021 22:05

British. Smile

Born in the north of England, an have always lived in England, but class myself as British.

Proudboomer · 07/08/2021 22:06

I am a mix of several different ethnicities but I was born and raised in England so I view my self to be English. On firms I tick the British box as England is part of the British isles.

DaisyWaldron · 07/08/2021 22:06

I do think of myself as European, though. I'm entitled to two different EU nationalities, as well as the British one. My sister lives in another European country, where my niece was born. My stepmother, aunt, and sister in law all come from yet more different countries in Europe. That's seven different European countries at small family gatherings (plus a couple of non-European countries).

My DH says English too. I don't have a problem with that, and he doesn't have a problem with me saying British. Each to their own. Smile
TheLovelinessOfDemons · 07/08/2021 22:07

Scottish, but have quite a mix in my heritage.

Spidey66 · 07/08/2021 22:08

London born, Irish dad, maternal grandparents Irish
British passport, waiting on Irish. I feel more British tbh cos I was born here and never lived in Ireland but I'm proud of my Irish heritage and background.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 07/08/2021 22:09

British.

Born in Wales with Welsh mother, half Welsh/English father. Have lived in England since 1998. Husband feels British too (completely English life and background). Interestingly, DD11 said she felt English when we did the census, DS9 said he was British.
