Me and DH

magsbagsfags · 04/08/2021 22:21

Why do people say it?

If you remove DH from the equation...you wouldn't say "me went".

Is it "Me and DH went to the cinema...."? No!

Because it is not "Me went to the cinema...." it sounds awful! So does "me and DH"

it is "I went to the cinema...". Therefore it is "DH and I went to the cinema".

@Meraas

Me and myself hate this spag pedantry. You need to live, laugh, love more.
Live, laugh, love annoys me almost as much now you mention it.
Chunkymenrock · 05/08/2021 08:09

I agree, OP. It's a straightforward way to check and it does matter.

NewlyGranny · 05/08/2021 08:11

I did a parents' grammar Q&A session in a school once, and they wanted to know how this works.

One gave us the brilliant story of a friend who signed off every messages with,

"Love the kids and myself,"

which, with the lack of a comma after love and the reflexive pronoun myself, is actually either a command to love her children and her, or a declaration of love for her children and herself!

What she wanted to say was "Love, (from) the children and me."

The sharer decided the friendship meant more than the grammar, which I felt was wise and generous.

So, I'm very meh about people just getting it wrong. But people trying too hard to get it right, and getting it wrong anyway, does ruffle my feathers a little.

So, it doesn't bother you if people just accept their limitations, but somebody trying to improve but still making mistakes does?

I find that most 'grammar pedants' place an undue amount of weight on the rules that they understand while conveniently ignoring those they don't. Very rarely do people adhere to all grammatical rules while criticising others.

MrsFin · 05/08/2021 19:58

Because they don't want to drop their regional dialect and speech patterns

It's nothing to do with dialect and speech patterns.
Using dialect doesn't mean using incorrect grammar.

ShiningGonnaShine · 05/08/2021 22:00

@DysmalRadius - yes, because trying hard to get something right and, thinking you are being clever, when you're actually getting it wrong is significantly more annoying than just getting it wrong. And, given that I normally witness this from people who have a vague whiff of 'look at me, aren't I clever?' about them, I can't help but find it irritating. FYI - as pp have stated, I often say 'me and...' when it should be '... and I' because it's just the way I and the people around me talk. Depends who I'm talking to, I suppose, in terms of how high I switch the sensitivity of my grammar filter to 😁.

Totally agree with your point about grammar pedants having favourite rules that they focus on, though.

Di11y · 05/08/2021 22:22

There's a pedants corner, think you'll feel right at home.

@magsbagsfags

"Not only taught to kids at too notch independent schools?"

Tsk-tsk. If you're going to start a grammar or spelling thread make very sure you don't have any mistakes in your posts!

BTW that's a great show you've taken your name from.

magsbagsfags · 06/08/2021 00:59

@VeniVidiWeeWee

That was clearly autocorrect not me that write "too" 😂

I totally made the name up! What show are you referring to?

I know what the correct grammar is and am very good at written English, but I'm common and grew up speaking local dialect. I don't speak with correct grammar all of the time, but that doesn't mean that I'm completely illiterate or dim-witted.

Topseyt · 06/08/2021 02:34

I'm something of a stickler for reasonable grammar but have to admit that I couldn't give a shit about this one.

I would say "me and DH" because it just feels more relaxed and normal.

On the other hand, would OF, could OF, should OF, might OF ....... Grrrrrrrrrr!!!

LimeRedBanana · 06/08/2021 02:41

I don’t disagree with you at all, but your lack of upper case at the start of sentences, as well as full stops at the end in your OP (just to kick off with), kind of means you don’t have a leg to stand on. 😬 Grin

NatMoz · 06/08/2021 05:58

In fairness, before I looked at this thread I thought 'oh no, terrible grammatical error in the title' lol.

garlictwist · 06/08/2021 06:00

It's "DH and me" if you are both the objects of the sentence - i.e. "my mum gave her old sofa to DH and me".

But if you are the subjects, it is "DH and I" (i.e. DH and I took my mum's old sofa")

BetsyBigNose · 06/08/2021 06:05

@NewlyGranny - I bet your new GC will grow up with a fantastic understanding of grammar!

@Caffeinemonster - sorry to read about your awful friends! Wink
