Should I complain - Man United

NotaFan21 · 04/08/2021 09:51

NC for this as very outing.

So, I was out for a run yesterday morn on one of my usual routes which includes a lap of the perimeter of the town and University playing fields where we live. They're freely open for the public to access.

I noticed there were lots of cars and banners, some saying 'Summer Edu Parking', and families with young kids milling around assumed it was some sort of summer school/camp, it wasn't closed off so continued on my way.

I was head down running when this arm was flung across my path oht of nowhere, I manged to stop but nearly smashed into it, looked up to see what can only be described as a 'men in black' type character blocking my way, who then bore down on me and shouted in my face and demanded 'where do you think you're going' I've never been so taken aback, I just laughed and said well I'm clearly running aren't I and my final destination is home, he then demanded (shouting again) 'well where's home, where do you live' again I was aghast I'm a middle aged woman just clearly out doing some exercise. And I have some stranger shouting at me demanding to know where I live 'I said I'm really sorry I run this route several times a week, this is my home what's the problem?' He then said this area is out of bounds as Dundee United are training here this week and we can't be having them exposed to COVID. It was then I noticed there was event type hording with plastic sheeting covering it so you couldn't actually see into the pitches

I said 'I can assure you I'm not interested in going anywhere near Dundee United I just want to run out of the gate at the bottom there and then home' he then said 'well where's home' WTAF. A Uni janitor type person then appeared who'd clearly heard all this smirking and laughing, telling me you have to go back the way you came. I actually felt very intimidated. Weirdly there again a few families and older teens hanging around in this bit - I was confused as none of them were being balled at or told to go back the way they'd come.

I also could quite easily have crashed into his arm, I was going at a real lick so would have really hurt myself if I hadn't managed to stop.

I had one last try at saying 'look I just want out the gate at the bottom' but they told me it was locked any way - it flaming wasn't as I ran back up thr other side and checked on my way back.

I felt really uneasy about it all day, I was just a woman on my own out for a run and felt like I'd been treated like a criminal and needlessly intimidated, when people who were clearly there to see them and might have bothered them weren't.

Anyway I've since found out it's not Dundee United - I was very surprised they would be so pathetically precious, my DH was actually laughing and saying haven't they all had COVID. It turns out it's actually Man U training there this week!

Am I being unreasonable to think they can F Off and that they need to climb down out of their own backsides and have a bit more respect for the people who actually live in the neighbourhoods where they're training - I could give no more fks about Man U than the moth that's currently buzzing round this room. It was totally disproportionate and unprofessional behaviour and very odd to have signalled me out.

I want to complain but I don't even know who to!

I would be pissed off too, but I wouldn't complain.

The people hanging around could be family or friends or staff or whatever.

Can't really blame them for being security/covid conscious.

M4J4 · 04/08/2021 10:02

Why is the first comment on threads always shit?

If course you should complain, the fucker hurt you, ignore pp.

So sorry that happened to you Flowers

8dpwoah · 04/08/2021 10:03

I would but on something like Twitter. You know if you email them (there'll be some sort of customer service address on their website I expect) the person at the other end of the email will just end you a sorry about that, covid, kind of email.

I totally understand the need for security but there's ways of doing it that aren't upsetting. If they'd just said, sorry we've had to make this area out of bounds today, I know it's a nuisance but it's with good reason, and maybe made half an effort to put some signage up before you got to that bit, you'd have been irritated but no harm done so I don't think YABU at all. As always, would they have been like that with a man?

Yes start with council and the club? Presumably someone has given them the ok to cordon off public areas?

Unfortunately lots of security guards (NASGALT, of course) have power trip tendencies. This man sounds like an utter arse. YANBU.

Hereward1332 · 04/08/2021 10:07

Is the area you were running a public right of way, or just University playing fields that the public use? If the latter, you don't really have much to complain about as it's private land and they have a right to stop you using it. Heavy handed, but tough.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/08/2021 10:08

I would complain to someone - maybe the police?

BIWI · 04/08/2021 10:09

She didn't get hurt! Read the OP properly.

Why do you run head down @NotaFan21? You should be looking forwards!

Anyway, that's besides the point.

Yes, you should definitely complain.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 04/08/2021 10:09

Why is the first comment on threads always shit? Confused

Why is it shit to say I would be pissed off too but wouldn't complain Hmm

MotionActivatedDog · 04/08/2021 10:10

Yep complain. The bit you were running on- have Man U actually hired it out so it’s a private space for the week or was he literally preventing a member of the public being on public access ground without actually having any jurisdiction to do so?

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 04/08/2021 10:11

I thought it would be weird if it was Dundee United! I used to regularly walk through their summer training pitch on my way to work and nobody batted an eyelid Grin

Comefromaway · 04/08/2021 10:11

@Queenoftheashes

The OP said they were university playing fields. Many universities choose to make their campuses open to the public but they are still private property and they can still cordon them off if they wish.

However the attitude of the person who stopped you was awful. Better signage etc should have been put up and the university should have made it clear that members of the public were usually allowed to use this area. They should have explained politely.

Hence I would complain both to the club and the university about how you were spoken to.

Mookie81 · 04/08/2021 10:19

The hyperbole is strong in this one. Hmm

rjacksmiss · 04/08/2021 10:20

Go to the press with it or local MP. Residents shouldn't be affected in any way with them coming to train. They must think you're a pap! 🤣

HarebrightCedarmoon · 04/08/2021 10:24

Yes definitely complain. His attitude is rubbish and he should have been apologetic. Also they are so very unlikely to get Covid from someone running past.

Tweet Marcus Rashford, he will sort it. He's injured just now.

Doublestar · 04/08/2021 10:26

This has nothing to do with covid or Man U IMO and everything to do with one (probably small-penised) man working at a shitty job and enjoying a bit of a power trip.

Do you think he'd have done that if it had been a couple of thuggish looking lads? Nah. Unfortunately there are many men like this in the world, often in jobs that give them a modicum of power, who enjoy exerting (in their mind) a pathetic show of authority over others (helps if it's a lone woman).
I'd have said "no, I live just beyond that gate so move your arm thanks" and ran on. But that's just me.

Intherightplace · 04/08/2021 10:29

I'd be inclined to tell Dundee they're being blamed for the inconvenience and intimidation of locals too.

However, when did an Man U start training in public parks? There's something that doesn't quite ring true.

Intherightplace · 04/08/2021 10:30

I'm also not sure that security at such an event would look like Hollywood MIB types, more likely hi vjz jackets surely?

weebarra · 04/08/2021 10:31

Ooft, don't mix up Dundee and Dundee Utd. You could cause WW3!

Intherightplace · 04/08/2021 10:33

Oops sorry not sure I knew they were different Grin

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 04/08/2021 10:35

I would make a complaint.

NotaFan21 · 04/08/2021 10:39

@Intherightplace he had a blue full suit on (so okay not black), and ear piece with the telephone style cord feed - very men in black/blue.

It's the town playing fields and Uni playing fields (very snobby/prestigious uni depending on your standpoint). That's what I said in my OP you can have a Google abs check - which is obviously what I did when I got back!
