Should I complain - Man United

NC for this as very outing.

So, I was out for a run yesterday morn on one of my usual routes which includes a lap of the perimeter of the town and University playing fields where we live. They're freely open for the public to access.

I noticed there were lots of cars and banners, some saying 'Summer Edu Parking', and families with young kids milling around assumed it was some sort of summer school/camp, it wasn't closed off so continued on my way.

I was head down running when this arm was flung across my path oht of nowhere, I manged to stop but nearly smashed into it, looked up to see what can only be described as a 'men in black' type character blocking my way, who then bore down on me and shouted in my face and demanded 'where do you think you're going' I've never been so taken aback, I just laughed and said well I'm clearly running aren't I and my final destination is home, he then demanded (shouting again) 'well where's home, where do you live' again I was aghast I'm a middle aged woman just clearly out doing some exercise. And I have some stranger shouting at me demanding to know where I live 'I said I'm really sorry I run this route several times a week, this is my home what's the problem?' He then said this area is out of bounds as Dundee United are training here this week and we can't be having them exposed to COVID. It was then I noticed there was event type hording with plastic sheeting covering it so you couldn't actually see into the pitches

I said 'I can assure you I'm not interested in going anywhere near Dundee United I just want to run out of the gate at the bottom there and then home' he then said 'well where's home' WTAF. A Uni janitor type person then appeared who'd clearly heard all this smirking and laughing, telling me you have to go back the way you came. I actually felt very intimidated. Weirdly there again a few families and older teens hanging around in this bit - I was confused as none of them were being balled at or told to go back the way they'd come.

I also could quite easily have crashed into his arm, I was going at a real lick so would have really hurt myself if I hadn't managed to stop.

I had one last try at saying 'look I just want out the gate at the bottom' but they told me it was locked any way - it flaming wasn't as I ran back up thr other side and checked on my way back.

I felt really uneasy about it all day, I was just a woman on my own out for a run and felt like I'd been treated like a criminal and needlessly intimidated, when people who were clearly there to see them and might have bothered them weren't.

Anyway I've since found out it's not Dundee United - I was very surprised they would be so pathetically precious, my DH was actually laughing and saying haven't they all had COVID. It turns out it's actually Man U training there this week!

Am I being unreasonable to think they can F Off and that they need to climb down out of their own backsides and have a bit more respect for the people who actually live in the neighbourhoods where they're training - I could give no more fks about Man U than the moth that's currently buzzing round this room. It was totally disproportionate and unprofessional behaviour and very odd to have signalled me out.

I want to complain but I don't even know who to!

@Intherightplace

I'd be inclined to tell Dundee they're being blamed for the inconvenience and intimidation of locals too.

However, when did an Man U start training in public parks? There's something that doesn't quite ring true.

It's not a public park, it's a university. Sports teams often use university facilities, especially if preparing for away matches or as if their own training facilities are under renovation/have a temporary issue.
pinkcircustop · 04/08/2021 10:44

I think YABU. It was obvious an event was going on, you decided to ignore. You were stopped and told the grounds were not in use right now and you should have listened and gone back.

University playing fields are theirs to do with as they wish, and they had chosen to close it off from the public. You don’t have a right to use it.

Comefromaway · 04/08/2021 10:44

Our local football team for example are currently having underpitch heating putting in.

Why is the first comment on threads always shit?

If course you should complain, the fucker hurt you, ignore pp.

So sorry that happened to you Flowers

No one hurt the OP, @M4J4.
RedHelenB · 04/08/2021 10:48

Complain about what? If its private land then they can impose restrictions. Yes he could have been polite but it seems a bit of a mountain out of a molehill to me.

EverybodyIsInteresting · 04/08/2021 10:48

Fancy another run?

Maybe go the opposite way next time, and go through the gate at the bottom. If you get stopped tell them you thought that seeing the gate was now unlocked, the training must have finished...

I wouldn't complain though. Not sure it's all that serious. I would be annoyed, but by the next day I would be over it, which is my measure of how to decide whether or not too complain.

Manchester United are currently at a training camp in a prestigious university town. They must have a PR person but I'd personally go to Facebook or Twitter about the heavy handedness of the security

PaulaTrilloe · 04/08/2021 10:53

If the security man physically stopped or touched you and you were not aware of who he was doesnt this constitute assault?

I see from the news its St Andrews.
EverybodyIsInteresting · 04/08/2021 10:54

Maybe post this on Scotnet. See if anyone in St Andrews fancy going for a wee run through a gate...

I wonder what would happen if there was a few of you.

I was thinking just the same..
Viviennemary · 04/08/2021 10:55

If it was a public area and not private ground you should complain to the police.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 04/08/2021 10:56

They cited covid as a reason? Isn’t Man U, and all their attendant entourage, travelling to Scotland, for training, a covid risk in itself?

EverybodyIsInteresting · 04/08/2021 10:57

That's a big if. He didn't touch her.

He put out his arm. She stopped before she reached it.

DancesWithTortoises · 04/08/2021 11:01

Oh please complain. I'm so fed up with people who think football is important. It really isn't.

Upamountain43 · 04/08/2021 11:01

I think you should complain about this guards heavy handed approach - but in all fairness you do not know if there is any background to his reaction.

Public figures do get stalked and do get death threats and none of us will know if there is particular serious concern right now surrounding a player.

ancientgran · 04/08/2021 11:02

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

I would be pissed off too, but I wouldn't complain.

The people hanging around could be family or friends or staff or whatever.

Can't really blame them for being security/covid conscious.

So family or friends or staff or whatever are magically untouched by covid?
Intherightplace · 04/08/2021 11:07

OK, so you were on private land, you'd already (probably) ignored a sign saying no public access and you weren't taking no for an answer.

They probably needed to know where you live because they have instructions to allow people who live on campus access.

Obviously they shouldn't have been rude and intimidating, but I bet there's another version of this story.

If it is as you tell it, with no bias, of course you should report.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 04/08/2021 11:07

So family or friends or staff or whatever are magically untouched by covid?

They are probably getting tested as much as the players and will have to abide by distancing rules.

UrAWizHarry · 04/08/2021 11:08

Absolutely I would have complained. I would be tempted to go back there and ask to speak to a supervisor there and then. What a dick.

RunningFromInsanity · 04/08/2021 11:08

God what an overreaction.

You tried to enter somewhere that was temporarily closed off. You were told you weren’t allowed, by a security guard doing his job. You continued to argue. You were told again.

Orf1abc · 04/08/2021 11:17

The training camp at St Andrews finishes today. I'd let it go.

Milling around doesn't sound very distanced to me.
DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 04/08/2021 11:24

They may be in a social bubble together. They aren't going to needlessly risk any players getting covid, they would lose a fuckload of money if they did.
