As a teacher of 45 years' experience, I thought I was all over bullying, until I read this in the paper:

www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/age-is-no-barrier-elderly-resident-targeted-by-retirement-village-bullies/6R7KEMWWPRPPY2V4LP56JCVFXQ/

@Mandalay246

The anonymous note was the wrong way to go about it. But if the garden is messy it needs to be tidied up. One messy garden brings down the whole road.

Oh dear, we can't have that can we - especially in a naice area! In actual fact people are entitled to do whatever they want in their own garden - and to hell with the whole road. If I received such a note I would be inclined to go for a late night walk with a container of Roundup.

🤣 I am hoping for a good AIBU wheelchair parking story when I’m that age.
TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/08/2021 09:36

It's just a cranky letter written by some cranky (and almost certainly socially awkward) resident with nothing better to do. It's not nice, but if this is the most upsetting thing you've seen after years of teaching, you have lived an exceptionally sheltered life.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 04/08/2021 09:46

I think actually sending a note to someone to ask them to tidy up their bit of a communal area is not necessarily a bad thing. But it sounds like just different styles of gardening rather than an actual scruffy plot. I like wildlife-friendly gardening, natural looking growth, cottage garden borders, vegetable-growing and dislike neat lawns and regimented planting, but then wouldn't live somewhere that required a manicured garden.

Cadent · 04/08/2021 09:47

Well, there was a photo of the typewritten letter with the article, which included exactly those phrases. Are you saying the tabloid forged it to make a story?

It just reads as fake to me.

Cadent · 04/08/2021 09:48

And who uses a type writer?!

BlithePilgrim · 04/08/2021 09:53

@Cadent

An unpleasant old person who isn’t computer literate and doesn’t want to be identified by his/her handwriting? Not clear whether ‘Daisy Mae’ is a pseudonym…

Actually, it might have been word-processed, anyway — the link no longer works so can’t check.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 04/08/2021 09:55

The link won't open for me.

PolytheneRam · 04/08/2021 09:59

The link won't open for me either.

I can't access link either. Clearly been removed!
billyt · 04/08/2021 10:10

I'd print the letters off at A0 size or bigger, and fix to a post.

Then plant that

I prefer to think (hope) that 'Daisy May' is a loner and only one resident is a total cunt.

BIWI · 04/08/2021 10:12

Link doesn't work!

Unpleasant old person? Your ageism is showing.

Actually, it might have been word-processed, anyway — the link no longer works so can’t check.

Because they probably realised it was a fake story.

SnickettyLemon · 04/08/2021 10:16

I have found it elsewhere, for those who missed it.

^^ Sorry, not sure if you can actually read that!

My ageism isn’t showing at all. Old people aren’t exempt from being unpleasant. Hmm

SnickettyLemon · 04/08/2021 10:25

I will try again!

The letter seems snotty and point scoring rather than bullying.

Are you saying you think that letter was written by someone pleasant?

Mean Girls retirement village..

Thanks snickettyLemon, I can read the letter you posted!

What a grotesque bunch of people that live there. (Or just one nut job, claiming community support for their views).

Can imagine it would get too many new residents keen to move in there now.

Maybe people should just mind their own business and pay less attention to what other people are doing!
rainbowstardrops · 04/08/2021 11:15

Why am I the only one who can't open the link? Confused It just says I've come to a dead end!

I think you misunderstand ‘ageism’. Unless you are labouring under the delusion that referring to one person, who is by definition old because he or she lives in a sheltered community for old people, and who is unpleasant by virtue of having sent a deeply nasty semi-anonymous letter, as ‘old’ and ‘unpleasant’, is ageist.
