Teen kids on hols - rooms?

We are looking to book a holiday, have 3 teens (well 12,15 and 17) and we usually share a big family room/2 bed with one one the sofa. It's cramped and lacking in privacy. We have the option to instead book 2 x 1 bed apartments (hopefully next to each other!) and have the kids in one, us in another. Would you do this? Would it be frowned upon?

We had (then) DD17 & DS15 sharing a hotel room right down the corridor last time we went away . A bit different from an apartment though. Would it even be allowed by the company/owner? I’d check that first.,

bluebeck · 03/08/2021 18:32

Can't you just book a 2 bed apartment? Then if anyone falls out etc they can sleep on the sofa.

bluebeck · 03/08/2021 18:33

It should be cheaper than 2 x 1 bed apartments too.

icedcoffees · 03/08/2021 18:34

Would it not make more sense to get a 2/3 bed apartment?

bobandhisburgers · 03/08/2021 18:37

Absolutely fine to do this. 15 & 17 year old will love it with the 12yr old with you. My step dad wanted to put us in a different hotel once! I was 8, brother was 12!

UserStillatLarge · 03/08/2021 18:41

You need to book a 3 bed really so there is no one sleeping on the sofa.
I'd even go so far as to say if you have book 2 apartments (because there's no 3 beds) you should book a 2 bed and a 1 bed.

Never understood why people go on holiday and put up with less comfortable conditions than at home. Yes, I get it's more expensive to pay for extra bedrooms, but I'd rather go on a cheaper holiday and be comfortable.

Kite22 · 03/08/2021 18:44

I can't see the owners allowing 3 minors to book an apartment without an adult not that they would know who was sleeping where each night but you'd have to book so you and dh were one in each.

However, as bluebeck says, wouldn't it make more sense to book a two bed in the first place ?

PoptartPoptart · 03/08/2021 18:44

I think it’s fine op. More space and privacy for you all.

bubblicious3 · 03/08/2021 18:51

We did book a 2 bed, but then we still have one on our sofa. With two one beds, they have one bedroom and one sofa but we aren't tripping over them! It's in a hotel. Thee are no 3 beds

I think people are confused because you've said apartment (implying totally separate buildings) and are now saying hotel.

So I would book one room for you, and a bigger room for the kids - most hotels will do rooms with two singles (pushed together) and a double sofa bed.

Goldbar · 03/08/2021 18:58

I think it's fine so long as the rooms are connecting or at least next to each other. I'd ring the hotel to try to make sure of that. If they're down the corridor or on another floor, not fine.

honeylulu · 03/08/2021 19:04

Sounds fine to me.

I find this so frustrating about hotel accommodation. We prefer the "set up" of a hotel including all inclusive food and drink, kids club for youngest, airport shuttles but the accommodation options are generally so unworkable for families especially with older children. What we would love is apartment style accommodation so we all have a bedroom but with the convenience of hotel facilities. Last time we gave up and booked an apartment (not in a hotel).

I've only found one place so far with the dream set up - Eden in Portugal (hotel with apartment accommodation- 2 or 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms in one apartment). If anyone can recommend any others I'd love to know!

bubblicious3 · 03/08/2021 19:22

Ah sorry, the hotel calls them apartments. They are rooms with a bedroom, then a separate kitchenette and sofa bed. So two kids in twins, one on sofa. Separate room for us with same layout, but minus giant shoes everywhere!

We are taking DD and two friends on holiday next year. They will be 15. They will have their room, we will have ours. I will message the hotel nearer the time to ask for rooms to be together.

DD has been on school trips to hotels in UK and abroad and obviously had a room with friends.

starbrightstarlight8888 · 03/08/2021 19:32

I thought all rooms had to have an over 18 in. That was the case when I last went abroad with my under age cousins.

Starbonnet123 · 03/08/2021 19:33

@honeylulu paloma oceana in Antalya turkey have fantastic family rooms ,they are 2 hotel rooms with one door , really nice and comfortable .
The rooms are a mirror image of each other with 2 beds in each room and a bathroom, fridge and tv but the added bonus of one main door but an interior door for privacy .

Sounds fine. We did similar.
Elouera · 03/08/2021 19:35

Ask if they have any connecting rooms with a door in between.

Mindymomo · 03/08/2021 19:36

We managed to find 2 bedroom apartments in Menorca and Cyprus with 2 bedrooms, but when our children were old enough we would get interconnected rooms, which works really well.

celtiethree · 03/08/2021 19:37

We’ve done this absolutely fine.

Pastrydame · 03/08/2021 19:37

So what layout has a two bed apartment?

Looneytune253 · 03/08/2021 19:38

I would but have the 12 year old in with you and the two older ones together

bubblicious3 · 03/08/2021 19:38

So the two bed is as it sounds - 2 bedrooms with one sofa bed in a main area. It's fine, but the one who sleeps on the sofa leaves stuff everywhere so we end up with no common area. If we had 2 separate one beds, we could keep one sofa free to actually sit on!

JoborPlay · 03/08/2021 19:38

Sounds like a perfect solution. My parents did this if we stayed in hotels / apartments when I was a teen.

bubblicious3 · 03/08/2021 19:39

Just to be awkward the 12 and 15 yr old are close, the older is always on the sofa.
