Toilets are for paying customers only?!

I ordered myself a nice brunch at this cafe nearby.

Lovely food. I went up to pay after I'd finished and then asked if I could use their loo before I left?

I was told 'Sorry, toilets are for paying customers only'. I said I just ate a meal here and paid? He said 'Sorry, if you want to use the toilet you'll have to buy something else and then go'

I ordered a can of drink because I was bloody bursting and couldn't wait to faff!

AIBU to think this is unacceptable customer service? I had already paid for a meal! Same bloke that I paid the meal for, I asked for the loo with him so he knows I had eaten here already

I wouldn't have moved so that they couldn't have served anyone else. I am not worried in the slightest about causing a scene . I'm guessing the manager (or security!) would be called at which point they could deal with it.

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 03/08/2021 12:50

Why did you ask? Why didn't you just use the toilet?

Daisyhoney · 03/08/2021 13:06

I'm starting to think this is all a bit of a wind up especially seeing as the op hasn't come back and responded to anyone.
I can't believe anyone would pay a staff member for their food, then straight away have the same staff member tell them they weren't a paying customer so they'd have to purchase something else in order to use the toilets. And they duly obliged!! Seriously bonkers.

Vooga · 03/08/2021 13:09

Yes ridiculous but I wouldn't have asked if I could use the toilet after eating and drinking there. I would just use it.

sanmiguel · 03/08/2021 13:10

This has got to be a load of old rubbish. Someone has too much time on their hands I think. If this is a true story, the OP needs some serious help with assertiveness.

LouLou198 · 03/08/2021 13:10

I think firstly I wouldn't have asked, but if I had my response would be "but I am a paying customer, I have just paid you!!" No way I would have bought anything else!

lap90 · 03/08/2021 13:12

Just when you think you've heard it all...

happinessischocolate · 03/08/2021 13:27

I ordered a can of drink because I was bloody bursting and couldn't wait to faff!

What? So presumably you then didn't pay for the can of drink until after you used the loo???

If so I'd have put the can back and walked out 😁

@prettyteapotsplease

This young man needs further training, doesn't he? I'd take it up with the manager if I were you to avoid a repeat. If a key or a code isn't needed then there is no requirement to ask permission to use the facilities. Perhaps he thought he was being humorous? Again he was a bit of a prat, but then many of us were like that when we were young. I hope he'll learn.
At no point did OP say or even suggest the man was young. She merely said it was the "same bloke" who she had paid for her original order.
FunMcCool · 03/08/2021 15:16

WHAT!!!!! That is wild.

NuffSaidSam · 03/08/2021 15:58

I would have pissed on his floor.

(I wouldn't have done. But I would have really felt like it!).

itsgettingwierd · 03/08/2021 16:00

Why did you ask?

Why didn't you just pay and visit the loo?

JackieNext · 03/08/2021 16:43

@Orf1abc

Silly answer to a silly question?

We don't have context until we know why you felt the need to ask permission.

Needed the key to the toilet

Yeah nah

NumberTheory · 03/08/2021 17:47

YANBU. As previously said, they are obliged to provide toilets for customers if they have over ten seats and you would still be classed as a customer, having paid but not yet left the premises.

If you wanted to try and stop this happening to others, you could complain to the council who should have responsibility for ensuring food premises meet legal requirements.

caughtinanet · 03/08/2021 18:29

Needed the key to the toilet

Well that was certainly silenced all the “Why didnt you just walk in to the loo” posters Grin

TheGoogleMum · 03/08/2021 18:39

You definitely count as paying customer just after paying! Ridiculous

MirandaMarple · 03/08/2021 18:41

Is this a wind up?

nocoffeenobooze · 03/08/2021 18:44

That's insane!
