To think that equestrian events are ridiculous

BFrazzled · 02/08/2021 23:05

In the Olympics.

Poor horses. This ridiculous dancing in dressage, who the hell thought of that?

There was one winner of the dressage contest who supposedly also won in the nineties. No mention of the horse, guess it was with a different one then Hmm

Yes, dressage and many other horses DO die of old age.
The top-level horses ARE elite athletes.
The GB team all, when interviewed, speak first about how amazing their horse is. They give them most of the credit.

The poster trying to draw a parallel between equestrianism and bullfighting/foxhunting, behave!

Racing, yes, I don't disagree; that is a brutal 'sport'. But very very different, in how its participants approach it and in its economic model, from the equestrian events we're talking about here.

CoalCraft · 04/08/2021 14:31

OP, you showed in your very first post that you have no idea what you're talking about when you suggested it's feasible for someone to ride the same horse at top level for thirty years, and your subsequent posts have confirmed you really have no authority whatsoever to talk about anything equestrian.

Maybe time to stop digging, eh? Lest you end up in Australia 🇦🇺

VeryLongBeeeep · 04/08/2021 14:31

alloalloallo I used to share a horse who would hack calmly past a manhole cover on four out of any five hacks, then on the fifth one decide it was the scariest, most spook-worthy horse-eating round flat metal monster in existence. To misquote Buffy: horse logic does not resemble Earth logic.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 04/08/2021 14:33

I don't agree with everything Bryony has said but
Your comments on this thread (including mentioning the lovely person of color) are something else. is not an accurate rendering of what she did say.

She said it was lovely having a person of colour commentating on equestrian events.

In other words, being positive about increasing diversity in equestrian sports, not being a patronising relic.

I wish you had an idea what impression you make. You are clearly from an older generation so I’ll leave at that.[/quote]
Ageist as well as ignorant. How unsurprising.

Aww who's cutting onions 🥲

whistlers · 04/08/2021 15:23

What a STUNNING horse. Gorgeous

whistlers · 04/08/2021 15:24

So emotional! Horses truly are regal animals.

VapeVamp12 · 04/08/2021 15:36

I watched a you tube video someone posted above and this one came up afterwards - it's so obvious how well these horses are cared for and loved. The german rider has never not flown with her own horse!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/08/2021 15:38

One of the very best events we saw at the 2012 London Olympics, was the disabled dressage. Quite astonishing performances by riders with life changing disabilities.

Utterly beautiful horse, and what a partnership they have.

Lee Pearson is inspirational - 11 Paralympic Gold Medals yet so few people have ever heard of him.
Powerflower22 · 04/08/2021 17:40

What are you talking about no equestrian eventer leaves their horse behind - they are worth hundred of thousands by the time their competing at that level and not to mention much loved pets to their owners!

MotherofPoodles · 04/08/2021 17:51

@Germolenequeen

So much abuse in dressage please Google Rollkur for further info.

I've ridden horses for 55 years

Rolkur is absolutely still around. But it is only one method of training and it looks to be going out of fashion.

No point arguing with some posters on here. I can't imagine how you end up being that sure about things you know absolutely nothing about.
Bertiebiscuit · 04/08/2021 17:55

Agreed - the horses are doing all the work while some lazy posho in fancy dress sits on their arse - not really a "sport" is it

lboogy · 04/08/2021 18:05

Who knew there were so many horse enthusiasts on MN.

I personally have no interest in elitist sports like equestrian events. Same with sailing. Bunch of rich people doing rich people stuff

I'll tell my food packing line worker neighbour that she's rich. Or maybe it's her retired car mechanic dad that's funding her elite hobby.

Over a million people in the UK ride regularly so not that surprising that there are people on MN discussing Olympic equestrian events.

Bigot!
amispeakingenglish · 04/08/2021 18:19

Its my favourite, hours of things I have no interest in too, we are all different and you can turn it off!! I appreciate the skills as I ride, stayed up in the early hours to watch the cross country. Wish there had been more on. Cycling and diving seem to be on all the time! I like the diving but no interest in cycling which to me seems to be about who can buy the most expensive bike. Like archery too, although again top equipment helps, have done archery in the past so have an understanding. 100m sprint same. So we can all watch what we like. Utter shite is quite an ignorant thing to say in my opinion, I wouldn't say that about boxing or something else I have no interest in. All these people are the best and have spent years training you need to applaud them all for this.

O NO, another ignorant comment. Sailing I don't know about but the riders get sponsored....... although parental support is required when young.

amispeakingenglish · 04/08/2021 18:21

Who knew there were so many chip on shoulder inverted snob bigots on MN. What a miserable lot.

Standard · 04/08/2021 18:28

Why doesn’t the horse get a medal instead/as well as the rider? Smile
