To think that equestrian events are ridiculous

BFrazzled · 02/08/2021 23:05

In the Olympics.

Poor horses. This ridiculous dancing in dressage, who the hell thought of that?

There was one winner of the dressage contest who supposedly also won in the nineties. No mention of the horse, guess it was with a different one then Hmm

Boo Hoo - You dont like the thought of the pretty horses being made to dance. - Shock.

No likey no watchy then. Find the change channel button and start zapping. Why is it nowadays that folks are so easily offended by stuff. Man (or woman / he / she / it) up and stop being a soorpuss.

Stigsmother · 03/08/2021 23:29

Droopy Clematis.
You cannot "coerce" a horse to jump round a event course, or perform a flawless dressage test, co-operation however, is essential

Stigsmother · 03/08/2021 23:31

Force doesn't work either, horse and rider have to be willing partners

Some people enjoy talking about things and even argue for changing things they think are wrong. Not everyone just zaps the remote, and this doesn't make them sourpuss...Just a different approach to life.

What a load of goady old drivel. Don’t like equestrian sports, don’t watch, problem solved.

I frequently fail to watch sports that don’t interest me, even though they entertain millions. I’ll never understand the appeal of football/cricket/golf/athletics/cycling, but if it makes others happy that’s great.
There are few days I enjoy more than cross country day of a big event, there’s nothing quite like it

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 04/08/2021 00:44

Hm, okay then.
I was taken over 3' wire by a horse who didn't agree with my ideas. DD was on a horse with the plan of going over trot poles, and he cleared the lot in one leap.

😂😂
I was long reining my athritic 20yo over slightly raised poles last year when he decided he was on the long gallop in front of Burghley House, took hold, jumped the lot and dragged me with him in the process Hmm
He was fine as he buggered off around the school, whereas I was picking my sore self up off the floor 🤣🤣

SmokeyDevil · 04/08/2021 07:38

@BFrazzled

But you're not willing to think that you could possibly be wrong about something. You think that you are right and that's the end of it. That's not a discussion.

No point arguing with this one guys, she doesn't understand it and isn't willing to put the effort into trying, so why bother? Leave her to her misunderstandings, it's not like her opinion is going to get it stopped anyway. Smile

Bryonyshcmyony · 04/08/2021 07:42

And as for the people whining on about riding any horse being cruel, I think you must have other issues and know absolutely nothing about animals generally

It's only horses that seem to bring out people's inner expert - feeding other people's horses when they see them in fields, getting critical about the way horses are kept and ridden. Are people like this about dogs?

Hopeisallineed · 04/08/2021 07:42

@ChiefClerkDrumknott that’s a very simple way of looking at it but what if you think equestrian sport is cruel, unnecessary and abusive to the animals involved? I hate horse racing with a passion and you can’t tell me all horses are being treated well in these sports, never mind the fact they are being shipped thousand of miles for our ‘entertainment’.

Bryonyshcmyony · 04/08/2021 07:44

what if you think equestrian sport is cruel, unnecessary and abusive to the animals involved?

Then keep it to yourself and remind yourself that the vast majority of horses in this country are looked after extremely well, even if they are competing.

Hopeisallineed · 04/08/2021 07:50

@Bryonyshcmyony just ignore it? Yes because that’s the way to deal with any kind of abuse. Wtf?!

What a curious post. If that's ^ an honestly-held belief - and it certainly has merit - why on earth should you keep it to yourself?
@Bryonyshcmyony just ignore it? Yes because that’s the way to deal with any kind of abuse. Wtf?!
So what actual abuse do you see happening, because there are plenty of official channels to report actual abuse. If its thst you don't like horses going to the Olympics there is absolutely nothing you can do about it other than educate yourself to put your mind at rest.

Bryonyshcmyony · 04/08/2021 07:55

Keep it to yourself becuase unless you can actually see abuse then there's nothing you can do, and your views are offensive to those who actually work with and know about horses.

Hopeisallineed · 04/08/2021 07:59

Wow. I assume that’s why there is still this level of cruelty in animal sports because the people who actually ‘pretend’ they love horses will turn a blind eye to anything that might remotely harm the reputation of the sport.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 04/08/2021 08:04

@mbosnz
It's an agenda thing, innit?
Well, exactly. The same agenda that doesn't just want to oblige everyone to go vegan, but wants to stop us all riding horses and having dogs and cats. I did once go right down the PETA rabbit hole and my word, that was enlightening. One of the arguments was that because domestic dogs might suffer, they had to go extinct - you were permitted a rescue dog, but you must never, ever, under any circumstances, breed a dog or buy a puppy.

Now and then I spot an OP like Poor horses. This ridiculous dancing in dressage, who the hell thought of that? and I think, oh, I know where this might be going - this is either crashing ignorance and intolerance, or someone with that same old agenda who doesn't quite want to admit to it just yet. And lo:
Some people enjoy talking about things and even argue for changing things they think are wrong.

Excuse my cynicism, but I am rapidly turning into a right old bag, but it looks to me as if OP, all along, thought that horse riding was wrong, but thought approaching the argument from that angle wouldn't be so successful. People are already going after racing, but lets go after dressage and traduce it as 'ridiculous' and accuse the riders and trainers, all of them, of cruelty and heartlessness, and stick a crowbar into our old friend the class divide and crank that a bit.

It doesn't wash with me. I ride. I have ridden since I was six. I've been on far too many horses who start jibbing excitedly and bouncing around when they approach the spot where they normally get a canter and who, as soon as you sit down, put you leg on and ease the reins, go away like bloody trains. I've been on a horse in the manege, and felt him start to track up eagerly and get excited as it becomes clear to him that we're about do fun stuff like three loop serpentines.

Yeah, they hate it. Every second. Confused

That's quite an offensive thing to say. You clearly know precisely fuck all about equestrian sport in the UK, but if you genuinely see abuse of horses then you are free to complain to the affiliated bodies of each sport British Eventing British Dressage British Showjumping Endurance UK British Riding Clubs The Pony Club

All contact info easily found online and they will take reports of actual abuse very seriously

Bryonyshcmyony · 04/08/2021 08:07

Oh and the Horseracing Authority.

I would imagine that's the one you are really out to get because you watched a documentary about it once.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 04/08/2021 08:10

Are people like this about dogs?
Hell yes. Some people with uncontrolled dogs who charge about the playing fields think I'm very tedious for actually training mine. I get heavy implications that I should let them play. I do let them play. But just now they are at school.

And people who don't own dogs at all tell you how to exercise them.

pointythings · 04/08/2021 08:10

It's pretty clear that the people on this thread who complain about equestrian events haven't ever ridden a horse, never mind competed. Try interacting with a horse before telling the rest of us how awful it all is.Hmm

whistlers · 04/08/2021 08:11

@gerispringer

So if a rider has a relationship with a particular horse then why isn’t the horse mentioned as a winner.? Oh no, some of you believe a horse is the same as a bike or boat.
Are you under the impression that all the horse's friends and family are watching the event and are annoyed their mate didn't get mentioned by name?
Hopeisallineed · 04/08/2021 08:12

Well blithely saying ‘ignore it’ is a pretty awful way to retaliate. It doesn’t take an idiot to realise that some of the techniques used in dressage such as rolkur, Spurs, shock collars and nose band tightening can cause all sorts of damage both psychological and physical to a horse. I’m an ex rider who has owned horses so I am not ignorant to what is going on in some aspects of these sports. Horse racing results in a huge amount of otherwise healthy animals being shot for our entertainment. I will not support it any more and I think more awareness needs to be brought to the public.

Bryonyshcmyony · 04/08/2021 08:13

The horses are always mentioned by name. Wtf are these people on?!

Spurs are absolutely fine used properly which you'd know if you really were a horse owner who had competed at all.

How many times do people have to tell you about rolkur?!

And shock collars. Really?!

Bryonyshcmyony · 04/08/2021 08:17

And do feel free to point out abuse whenever you see it.

How many emails or phone calls have you made to the affiliated bodies listed above reporting abuse?
