To want an Emily Campbell appreciation thread?

Badgertadger · 02/08/2021 21:20

Emily Campbell is the first woman weightlifter from the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team to win an Olympic medal. She's a 27 year old from Nottingham who doesn't get funding, and first picked up a kettle bell 5 years ago and she got a silver medal at the Olympics. (She's also offering hope and athletic potentiality to all women who can't fit into a size 10).

Am I being unreasonable to just want a thread that shines a wee bit of light on her wonderful achievement and leaves the rest of the noise in the shade for a minute? I don't want her achievements to be eclipsed by the actions or inactions of others.

Who agrees we should have an Emily Campbell appreciation thread?

Absolutely! What an impressive woman and story. I read about how her local community had been supporting her with free stuff as she hadn’t received funding. I also got crazy emotional for Charlotte Worthington’s story and win and I’ve never watched bmx before.
The sports funding system in this country is ridiculous. The massive funding going to sports where we have won in the past makes no sense. They’re already so well funded (and haven’t done that brilliantly this time) … spread it around. The big winners have been the bmxers so far, 4 medals in 4 events and they’ve had nothing. The people who love the sport and live for it, whether they’d be going to the Olympics or not should get it.
There’s more skateboarding with Sky Brown and Bombette Martin coming and rock climbing with Shauna Coxsey and they’ve had very little funding too.

Let’s hear it for all of the gb female medal winners (hope I’ve not missed any) Beth Shriever, Charlotte Worthington, Emily Campbell, Mallory Franklin, Georgia Taylor Brown, Charlotte Dujardin, Lauren Williams, Emma Wilson, Bryony Page,
Bianca Walkden and Chelsie Giles, plus the Gb Women’s gymnastics team.

NU at all - she’s wonderful !!

CasparBloomberg · 02/08/2021 22:36

@clymene I think we had the same thought at the same time.

MrsApplepants · 02/08/2021 22:54

Emily is awesome, hope she gets the recognition she deserves from now on. And loved her hair do!

Happylittlethoughts · 02/08/2021 22:56

I was late picking up my Mum as I couldn't leave Emily attempting that 160-odd kg lift alone ..SHE WAS FAB!!
Go Emily and all the women who are not funded .🙌💪💐

Maireas · 02/08/2021 23:00

Fantastic achievement!

Teaandakitkat · 02/08/2021 23:01

She is bloody amazing. I lift (very small in comparison) weights and I find her so inspirational. She's had so little financial support and worked so so hard. She deserves all her success. She looked so happy

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 02/08/2021 23:01

@Comtesse

Cannot believe she only started weightlifting seriously 5 years ago - that’s incredible Star
She was a junior champion shotputter and hammer thrower though, I think the disciplines work in tandem and she would have been really strong from that so I guess she had a good foundation. Still bloody impressive
RaininSummer · 02/08/2021 23:04

I don't watch sport unless it is thrown at me on the news so yey for Emily. Must be hard to keep going to those levels with no funding

BFrazzled · 02/08/2021 23:08

Well done to her. She is obviously very talented.

Women’s weightlifting is not popular so there isn’t much of a competition field there. Much easier to become a world class athlete than in any other sport essentially.

jamted · 02/08/2021 23:09

She was amazing and loved her reaction. I was reading an article that apparently sportswear companies had been interested in sponsoring her but then backed out due to her dress size. Hopefully her success will help to change these attitudes!

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 02/08/2021 23:09

There are several women medallists in mixed teams too - another in the dressage team I think, in eventing and in the triathlon and mixed 4 × 100 swimming relays.

TooBigForMyBoots · 02/08/2021 23:17

She was amazing. I am in awe of her body and strength.🤩 And I loved the space buns.

Well done Emily Campbell.😍

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 02/08/2021 23:22

And a special mention to amazing equestrian Charlotte du Jardin. She's now the most decorated British female Olympian. Even more amazing is that her horse Pumpkin is new to this level of dressage competition, making her achievement all the more impressive.
Her retired horse Valegro is probably one of the worlds most well known horses aka "The Dancing Horse".

Sometime mentioned women in the equestrian teams - pure dressage was two women abd a man; pure showjumping and eventing the other way round

Yes definitely- can we campaign for Emily for Strictly!
BurningRed · 02/08/2021 23:34

She absolutely smashed it.

I love a sports personality. She has got it in bucketloads. I hope she gets a lot of sponsorship offers now. We need more women like her.

Dancedancedancedancedance · 02/08/2021 23:38

Awesome work Emily Campbell!

Hdhdjejdj · 02/08/2021 23:40

@JacquelineCarlyle I think we should because she would be fantastic.

MarianneUnfaithful · 02/08/2021 23:55

Very pleased to see her pick up that medal and put it on.

Fantastic woman.
