To think Laurel Hubbard should not be competing against women - Part 2

I am overwhelmed by how much support there has been on this post and that the majority of people agree with the unfairness of this decision, it is good to see the majority being able to have a voice without being silenced.

It breaks my heart that a less fortunate girl who has worked so hard was passed over for a middle aged transgender woman who was 203 in the world when competing against men. Sad

I can’t decide if I want this person to win, to give the argument a better standing on never letting this happen again.
I guess we will find out today…

YANBU. The whole thing is a disgrace. Women are not a testosterone level / identity. It's disgusting that the IOC's rules allow this.

randomchap · 02/08/2021 15:26

I feel quite sorry for the medalists, Li Wenwen, Emily Campbell and Sarah Robles, as the discussions about this event have all centered on Hubbard rather than the competition as a whole.

Li Wenwen broke the Olympic record for both snatch and clean and jerk today and yet she's not being mentioned as much as Hubbard.

GromblesofGrimbledon · 02/08/2021 15:27

Laughing so much at "snatch" and "treehouse" Grin

Alaimo · 02/08/2021 15:32

Would a middle aged, female bodied athlete have ever been in a position to compete in the Olympics? Not a chance.

Except that Oksana Chusovitina has just proved that you can be a middle-aged woman and compete at the Olympics: www.nytimes.com/2021/07/25/sports/olympics/oksana-chusovitina-eighth-olympics.html

Bloody ridiculous! Honestly, everyone should read all the information on the Fair Play for Women website about the impact of this on women's sports (and women's rights more generally).

So true!

Alaimo

Not quite the same though is it.
She is also not technically competing for a country but as an independent.

(although this takes nothing away from her)

QualityMarguerite · 02/08/2021 15:38

Oksana rather proves that exceptional athletes may maintain their form. It remains too late for me though in my sport I was easily as good as Laurel was at lifting.

Charley50 · 02/08/2021 15:51

This has really spoilt the Olympics for me. I'm finding peering at all women contestants, looking for signs they might be Male.

ferretface · 02/08/2021 16:03

@Taliskerskye yes Caster (and the other two medallists from Rio 2016 womens 800m) has an intersex condition. Caster has 46 XY 5-ARD (5-alpha-reductase deficiency). It is a disorder of male sexual development.

And me, especially as I do not wish to judge a women on her appearance.

Especially ruined as I've googled some and there appears to be loads of 'speculation ' but no truth.

When asked if there were a TW they did not answer , so possibly more TW than just those who have declared themselves to be.

whatthejiggeries · 02/08/2021 18:27

No, her snatch wasn't good enough and she dropped it.😂😂indeed 😂😂

FrippEnos · 02/08/2021 19:58

Much as I am enjoying the joke, I think that LH has got exactly what they wanted, which is a place in the history books.

I don't believe for a second that they didn't throw this.

elgreco · 02/08/2021 20:05

It looked thrown to me.

AnyFucker · 02/08/2021 20:07

What new sort has Caster Semenya taken up please?

AnyFucker · 02/08/2021 20:11

Yup. The Fijian women’s 7s team was a case in point.
Kittii · 02/08/2021 20:49

What about the Chinese women's basketball 3's team?

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 02/08/2021 20:53

Haven't read whole thread, hadn't realised who lh was. However, I turned on Olympics by accident, said 'why is that man competing in a woman's competition' only for my husband to inform me it's a 'woman'. Uh, no, it's clearly a man. My kids said it was clearly a man. World gone mad. Now realise who this person is.

Kittii · 02/08/2021 21:43

Yes it's interesting that in the story it was a child that pointed out that the emperor didn't have any clothes on!

ferretface · 02/08/2021 21:52

@anyfucker Caster has taken up football

EdgeOfACoin · 02/08/2021 22:03

So disappointed to see that Dove soap is fully supportive of a male-bodied competitor denying a woman a place in women's sport at the Olympics:
