To do an LFT on my dog?

Snufflensneeze · 01/08/2021 19:52

My dog is really sneezy and coughing a bit. I’ve seen somewhere that the can carry Covid.
Would an LFT work? Her nose is a bit runny, I could easily sample her.

whether your dog has covid or kennel cough, the treatment is the same: quarantine your dog until their symptoms disappear.

Call the vet and describe your dog's symptoms (don't take the dog to the vet unless they say so; KC is highly contagious). A LFT is a waste.

I'm betting on kennel cough. Ours caught it at the groomers. He had to have antibiotics.

He is now vaccinated against basically anything there is a canine vaccine for, including kennel cough and leptospirosis.

No advice but I proper laughed when I saw this thread title Grin

ExtraOnions · 01/08/2021 20:37

I’m betting this is in the Daily Mail to tomorrow ….

AnyFucker · 01/08/2021 20:38

Hopefully this is a joke

LaurieFairyCake · 01/08/2021 20:59

I can't see how it would be cruel

One of my dogs has about 3 brain cells and would barely notice

What I do know is that if I was rubbing his tummy he'd happily let me poke his nose and throat a bit

clickychicky · 01/08/2021 21:01

@LaurieFairyCake if you did it like a human one you'd have to get the stick all the way up to it's brain

LaurieFairyCake · 01/08/2021 21:35

Well his 3 brain cells deffo wouldn't get in the way Grin

Cattitudes · 01/08/2021 21:39

LFT are not reliable if symptomatic which is why you need a PCR if you have a cough even if LFT is negative misses point of thread

tttigress · 01/08/2021 21:48

It bad enough for a human, I think you dog would go crazy!

Cryalot2 · 01/08/2021 21:57

Is it vaccinated against kennel cough? Even so can still get ill though not as severe.
The vet, and I would say kc
Hoping your dog is ok.

stayathomer · 01/08/2021 22:00

I'd assume op meant to use the snot coming out not stick anything up? Another vote for do nothing except call your vet first thing.

Peteycat · 01/08/2021 22:01

Stick whatever you like up your own orifices, but LEAVE THE CHILDREN AND ANIMALS ALONE.

This situation is becoming ABUSIVE beyond anything I have ever witnessed.

megletthesecond · 01/08/2021 22:03

Why not get him to lick one of the cotton buds?

HughGrantsHair · 01/08/2021 22:06

Get it checked by a vet. Not only kennel cough, but lung worm causes coughing. Could also have something up their nose irritating it and sticking a swab up there would just cause more problems!

HughGrantsHair · 01/08/2021 22:06

Meant sneezing, not coughing.

MuttsNutts · 01/08/2021 22:08

@Peteycat Do you realise you sound deranged?

WouldBeGood · 01/08/2021 22:08

Yes, and you will all need to self isolate for ten days in the Government quarantine kennels in Barking.

Coffeeonmytoffee · 01/08/2021 22:09

My dog has a form of hay fever. Her eyes are runny this time of year. But a cough is probably Kennel cough.

Wingingit573 · 01/08/2021 22:12

Are you on something?

Why on earth would you waste expensive resources to do a test on a species it's not fit for Confused

SusannahSophia · 01/08/2021 22:17

Apart from everything else, the LFT doesn’t work well on snot. That’s why you have to blow your nose before you use it...on a human you plonker!

SlipperTripper · 01/08/2021 22:27

Good luck with that 🤣

Darbs76 · 01/08/2021 22:32

Omg no absolutely not. Call your vet in the morning

WouldBeGood · 01/08/2021 22:46

I’m assuming this is a joke thread

Lolwhat · 01/08/2021 22:46

Yeah it’s not covid is it? So no don’t waste a bloody test on a dog, it’s probably kennel cough, ring the vet in the morning fgs
