To take their shit (in some cases, literally) and dump it in their garden? (Skip related)

MotherOfDemons · 01/08/2021 11:23

We are doing some work on our garden and hired a skip so we could get rid of an old shed and some garden debris. All week it's been fine, no one had put anything in and I was very much of the "not in my area" mindset.

Until yesterday. We had found a bag of open dog shit in our skip and had suspicions on who it was. We set up a camera and waited and caught the guy in the act. Went and put it on his doorstep as I know where he lives (he walks his dogs regularly past our house) thinking he might take the hint.

Saw him go past this morning so watched for him coming back at our hidden side window only for him to do it again! So I confronted him about it and he denied it outright until I got the video up on my phone. Said I would keep putting the shit right back on his doorstep if I saw him on camera again.

Woke up this morning to see someone had dumped a huge plastic pot of tile grout in there. Checked the camera and it's the neighbour a few doors down. Took it down and stuck it right in the middle of their driveway. He suddenly appears yelling "You can't dump your shit in my garden". Tell him we have him on CCTV dumping it in our skip and I will happily take it back for 10 quid. He is livid and offended that I would even suggest that he would dump it in my skip right up until I show him the video Hmm

I now have sign up telling people not to dump stuff and that they are being recorded, but AIBU to dump peoples shit right back if I catch them on camera doing this? I paid 200 quid so I could clear my own garden, not so I could fund a giant community bin! Sorely tempted to spam them on social media too (I won't of course).

Last year I had scaffold put up so that my roof could be assessed for repair. Scaffold costs a farking fortune. Imagine my pleasure when I found my neighbour up on it with a roofer assessing his roof.

I'm all for peace and love, but CFery needs a swift fuck right off.

The dig shit is right over the bloody line, well done OP.

@PlayerOne

We are getting a skip next week to clear some garden rubble and am now paranoid about this happening... can I please ask what security camera you used?
We had a skip on our drive recently for over a week for some building work. We didn’t have anyone put anything in ours. A neighbour had one on their drive for about a month, they spent ages clearing sheds & garages, they didn’t mention anyone had dumped stuff either. Do you have a big tarpaulin you can shove on it if you’re worried?
hedgehogger1 · 01/08/2021 21:15

Well done OP. Nice assertive way of dealing with the issue :)

Dutchesss · 01/08/2021 21:16

YANBU
For all those saying be neighbourly... there are 100 houses on my street, if they all wanted to dump 'just a bucket' a skip would be filled in no time. It's just plain rude to do it without asking.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/08/2021 21:37

So you think it's okay for the skip company to have to deal with dog poo? Unbelievable

Ooooooh. I love playing non-sequitur accusations:

So you are saying OP should never engage in a land war in Asia? Inconceivable.

user1471538283 · 01/08/2021 22:02

You are a hero OP. I wouldnt dream of putting my stuff in someone else's skip without their permission. Skips are expensive and are hired for your sole use.

Bananas52 · 02/08/2021 06:21

Our old neighbour started putting furniture in our slip without asking whilst we were in the middle of having major renovation works done (so needed all the space we could get). We were livid and asked them to remove the larger pieces (because we are pushovers)! Definitely keep doing what you are doing.

Did they ask if you could keep the scaffolding until they'd had their work done?
MotherOfDemons · 03/08/2021 13:35

Ooh there are a lot more replies than I anticipated. Sorry I haven't been back! Will read through in a second but for now...

Update So fluffy dogshit man hasn't even walked past our house since we confronted him. I left a note in the neighbour across from ours door, who spread the word to some other neighbours, and then took the 6 shit bags out of their bush and spread them all over the guys drive with a note Grin

Turns out a few others found his shit bags in their bushes so we collectively contacted the local police with the guys address. Apparently nowadays they can DNA test the shit and the dog so they can fine him but no idea how true that is. No updates from them but it's on record in any case!

I really don't get fly tippers, or skip abusers, I quite enjoy a trip to the local dump. It's very organised and not smelly.

DoubleTweenQueen · 03/08/2021 14:55

@MotherOfDemons Good to hear you're also cleaning up on the local poo-tippers! Why can't he just put it in the bin!!

ChainJane · 03/08/2021 15:32

DNA shit testing? Not heard of that but a good idea. Maybe a sample could be taken from all dogs shortly after they're born, and a national "dog shit register" could be created to find offenders when they don't pick up their dog's shit or dump it somewhere they shouldn't. It could be funded by a tax on dog ownership, a nominal fee of say £100/month per dog.

It's fine to take rubbish someone has fly-tipped on your property and return it to the owner but if you do this make sure you have CCTV proof like the OP. Otherwise it could be you that ends up in trouble. (If you don't know who tipped it, you have responsibility for it - you can't move it onto the public highway for example else you are guilty of flytipping yourself.)

billy1966 · 03/08/2021 23:42

Apparently where they have brought it in with stiff fines, there have been dramatic improvements.

I think some Scandi countries piloted it.

Brilliant idea IMO.

Dog fouling brings out the absolute rage in me.

BumpyBoobs · 03/08/2021 23:58

Good for you OP!
Earlier this year, my dad ordered a skip to clear the crap out of his house.
He actually paid extra for a lockable lidded skip. The company advised him to not hire an open skip for what he needed as it would become a dumping ground!
Its worth the extra money-he was able to put his stuff in then offered his neighbours the remaining space if they wanted.

memberofthewedding · 04/08/2021 01:33

A few years back I had a new kitchen and some remodelling and hired a skip. Of course people could not dump stuff during the day with burly builders around and at night I locked the gates on my drive so no one could get to it. Id like to bet there were some frustrated neighbours although I did allow one couple to dispose of some stuff the day before it was collected.

I like going to the tip, too, but it's not easy for people working f/t as it's only open from 9-4. Consequently, the queue to get in at weekends is massive.

I can foresee them introducing an appointment system soon, a lot of councils have.

But surely you would just save it for a day off and then go? Our tip recently moved to an appt system and it's open on Saturdays too.

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 04/08/2021 10:57

I hate cf skip dumpers. I've almost completed a huge reno (almost single-handedly) on my house and have had a lot of skips and people 'just putting a couple of small things' in. I always take them back too. If someone had put dog shit in I'd have spread it all over their lawn and maybe curled one out myself.
The only person I allowed to put stuff in was my neighbour a couple of doors up who loves some skip diving and probably removed more things than he added. I am very glad I've finished everything bar waiting for some proper professionals to do wiring/plumbing so I don't have to police my skip anymore.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 04/08/2021 11:05

Good for you!
What did they say when you showed them the video?

And just let them, it's only small stuff? Seriously? An open bag of dog shit? You do know that the skip guys sort through the contents don't you? You think they want shit everywhere? Not to mention the op would get billed for it! And 'small stuff' adds up. If everyone in the street put in a couple of 'small things' what's the op meant to do with the things she wanted to put in the skip she paid for with her money? No wonder there's so many entitled cheeky arseholes around with doormat thinking like that. Yeah, chuck the shit in, s'okay, it's only a little bag and I don't mind facing the wrath of shit covered skip guys and paying the fine. 🙄

CoffeeWithCheese · 04/08/2021 11:11

Our street rarely have skips and when they do they're for the shortest duration possible as they have to be on-street with all the associated permits. People don't generally take the piss - the worst we had was the nosey bugger from down the road scrutinising what we'd put in it and then policing anyone having a look and trying to take stuff OUT.

I was perfectly fine with people taking stuff out - we didn't have use for it - if they did... it got used and we got more space in the skip back - win-win but Her Down The Road had decided she was Skip Enforcer and I couldn't face arguing with her over it.

Need to hire one again this year which has reminded me - got a knackered summer house needing dismantling and putting in one.

Cheeseandlobster · 04/08/2021 11:21

We have a communal skip that comes every 6 months. Big bastard it is. It's always full by the end.

Also what happened to skip cf? The poster whose neighbours put a skip in their parking space rather than their own and were irate when the op got the skip taken away. I have often wondered that.

MyHairNeedsASnip · 04/08/2021 11:32

Good on you OP.

It's like having a bottle of milk in a communal work kitchen, everyone thinks "ooh I'll just have a little bit and it won't matter" then it's all gone when you go to make a brew. Same with skips, all the neighbourhood goes "I'll just pop this cardboard box in, it won't take up too much room".

That comparison made sense in my head but I'm not sure it does written down 😂 I've written it now though so I'm posting it.

longtompot · 04/08/2021 11:49

YANBU op, good on you!
When we've had skips, when we've finished filling with our rubbish we then say to our neighbours if there is space, if they have anything they want to get rid of feel free to put it in the skip.
Occasionally we've had single item skips, so just rubble or soil, because that's all we are getting rid of and it's cheaper to get them like that. We would be furious if someone just chucked their sink for eg in a rubble only skip, as without proof of who did it, it would be up to us to take it to the tip.
As for the people saying just share, well what happens when your whole neighbourhood just puts in a little item, and then it's too full for what you hired it for?

FabulouslyFab · 04/08/2021 12:47

My friend had a skip and I asked if I could put my knackered Dyson in it and she said yes. It was in there for less than 12 hours before it was taken 😂
What the taker didn’t know was it had stood at the bottom of my garden all the previous winter so was probably good for nothing !
