To think some are confusing 'calling out' with just disagreeing with someone?

All this 'calling out' all over the bloody place.

A friend posted something innocuous (and in a pretty light-hearted way) on their social media yesterday. One of their friends disagreed with them to which my friend responded with a 'ah well we can agree to disagree' kind of post. The friend replied with a 'like most people you just don't like being called out when you're wrong' etc.

Now, not to be confused with telling someone that they're an arsehole (or even just politely explaining something to them) for saying something racist/sexist/any kind of ist really, surely were not at a stage that you can't have an opinion, in this case about a television programme, without this ridiculous 'calling out' nonsense? It seems that every so often there's a new 'phrase' that eventually starts being used in a completely different way from how it started off that makes sense i.e. virtue signalling etc?

Am I the only one who just finds this so tiresome and that people can fuck off with their 'calling out' of the most ludicrous things?

I hate edgelords , wokelords and twatter mobs and think ID politics should be consigned to oblivion. Furthermore I am very left wing and becoming more so with age.Smile

Agree OP but concern is not just lazy language and lack of thinking it's the culture of Thought Crime. It comes in waves.

In some periods it was heresy and you could be burned or tortured for saying or thinking the wrong thing about religion. In Tudor and Elizabethan England courtiers were beheaded for saying things that might be treasonous. In some cultures and periods it was sexual and you could be killed/shunned/humiliated for adultery or the very suspicion of it.

In N Korea, Nazi Germany, KGB-ruled Russia it was for thought crime against the state and in 1950s USA it was McCarthyism and whole careers lost for the crime of left- leaning thought and Communist sympathies.

It's nothing new. Now the accusations are different but the process and the evil that drives it is the same.
I've seen careers disappear, friendships spoilt, people driven to the edge of despair for apparently being guilty of thinking the wrong thing.

Idiots who have enough instinct to know that to accuse is to prove your own "innocence", but not enough brains to understand why, jump on the bandwagon. They hope to bask in the Approval of the Right People by "Calling Out" someone else.... "Well done Ms A, you're a star for rooting out racists/heretics/adulterers/traitors/peadophiles/transphobes/Toryscum/communists/apolologists - whoever else we want to control".

So call me out for something. It won't be the first time. But just know what you're doing.
