To think Zara is unreasonable

Heading on holiday and managed to quickly pop into Zara to buy shorts! I was in a rush on my lunch break and brought 5 pairs in medium size. Queue for changing rooms was crazy!

Got home, no too tight so take them back the following day and exchange for a large, closing rooms closed for cleaning.

At home and 3 of them are still far to tight (can’t breath). I’m I really therefore an XL!!

I am 5.8 and weigh 10 and a half stone!

My other frustration is the lack of consistency in sizing!

So I’m I being unreasonable to expect consistency in sizing and also not to be an XL at 10 and half stone at 5.8!

Hmm. As someone with probably 90% of their wardrobe from Zara I would say YABU as if you know Zara you know that they’re inconsistent and need to either try on or get better at judging from observation. I have always had everything from small to XL, and have done through weight fluctuations between a size 10 to a size 16 at various times.

If you want vanity sizing Zara is not the place to shop.

DuvetCaterpillar · 31/07/2021 22:43

I don't fit anything in Zara anyway, but stick a small tape measure in your handbag. Measure self, measure shorts, give yourself an inch or so if the fabric is stretchy. Won't be perfect absolutely every time, but it makes your life a LOT easier if you hate queuing for the changing rooms!

saveyourbreath · 31/07/2021 22:43

YANBU.

Plus the clothes are so badly made. The amount of stuff I’ve bought from
Zara that’s flimsy and doesn’t wash well...I’ve given up.

If you’re looking for decent clothes at a reasonable price and sizing that seems normal then Cos all the way.

TrainspottingWelsh · 31/07/2021 23:01

How are they bu? You think they should have a sign saying if one size is far too small you might need to go up two sizes? Because I'd say that's just common sense.

Does it matter what the label says? It means you're an xl in Zara shorts, it isn't personally insulting your physique. If the label said extra small or 4xl it wouldn't mean you were suddenly tiny or huge either. Unless we have universal sizing it's ok for some things to come up small as others come up large.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 31/07/2021 23:16

I’ve long since given up on Zara - many years of riding horses have given me legs with muscles; something Zara assumes women don’t have.

I recommend GAP!

Nitgel · 31/07/2021 23:19

I'm a 14/16 and ordered a dress in xxl that was massive. Sizing is right odd.

MsHedgehog · 31/07/2021 23:34

Zara sizing is completely off. You definitely can’t buy without trying first!

PickAChew · 31/07/2021 23:38

I'm a 12-14 and none of their stuff ever looks like it would fit me. Not that I've been in there for a couple of years as it generally looks like a jumble sake, anyhow.

BurningRed · 31/07/2021 23:38

Made for European women who are smaller than the average size Brit.

I’m a small in there (occasionally a XS) but taller and over a stone lighter than you OP. I’d wear a size 6 everywhere else. My biggest bug bear (and why I struggle to buy much) is that everything isn’t long enough.

I think the medium in Zara is like an 8-small 10. Always has been, always will be.

They are catering, I think, to smaller, more petite women.

BoomChicka · 31/07/2021 23:44

Their website is ridiculous too. I was hunting for a black tie dress last week and one "dress" just showed a model trapped in a cave with just her head and shoulders showing. I saw another on Instagram the other day of a model crouched on top of a cooker 🤣

PickAChew · 31/07/2021 23:57

It is very unreasonable for a single store to have such inconsistent sizing. Surely, if they want repeat custom and the £££ that comes with it, they work on customers trusting the brand and if people randomly find that they're a M in one style and an XL in others, or, worse, that 3 t-shirts in the same style all fit completely differently, then that trust isn't earned.
TrainspottingWelsh · 01/08/2021 00:12

@PickAChew I can't think of a single women's clothing brand I can trust the sizing in. I'm currently 2 sizes bigger than dsd, yet I'm wearing jeans supposedly her size with a belt to hold them up. Likewise I have a dress a size bigger than I currently am that I wouldn't even attempt to try on because the seams would burst.
The only exception would be a few very high end brands, or sportswear and even then no matter what size I am there's no guarantee a certain style is cut to fit my shape.

Or perhaps just because I'm tall, and tall in women's clothes seems to be aimed at 5'6, I'm used to the fact clothes always have to be tried on and the label means fuck all

DifficultBloodyWoman · 01/08/2021 00:16

Even Zara knows their sizing is screwed. Check the labels. Apparently, a square indicates true to size and triangle means tiny. Or something like that.

Geamhradh · 01/08/2021 00:16

Zara sizing is proper mad.
I'm a 12 trouser everywhere except Next where due to their proper mad in the other direction vanity sizing I'm a 8-10. In Zara I can't even get into the biggest sizes. Which would all be too short anyway.
Tops I need a 12 from Next and a 14 from most places. Translates to XXL in Zara.

IdblowJonSnow · 01/08/2021 00:17

Yanbu
I'm usually an 8 - 10 and bought a pair a few years ago that were a medium. Can't get the fuckers on! I cba to try them on, lesson learned!!

DifficultBloodyWoman · 01/08/2021 00:17

Also, Zara is Spanish. Spanish women tend to have a slighter build than Brits. So do French. German brands have bigger cuts/wider shoulders etc.

foreverandalways · 01/08/2021 00:20

I am 9 stone 5ft 6 and large in their shorts

Kanaloa · 01/08/2021 00:24

Anything I might buy I try on first. I can be a size 10 in certain shops then a 14/16 in others, so I’d rather try them on to be sure. It would be good if there was more consistent sizing across the board but I don’t see that happening. I haven’t noticed Zara as particularly bad for women’s sizing but their kids stuff is oddly sized, I found the girls leggings and joggers really long in the leg. My kids are short in fairness but I thought they were bizarrely long - I was imagining them measuring some stretched out kid like Mike TV.

Journeynotdestination · 01/08/2021 00:32

Gave up on Zara a while ago. The quality is appalling for the prices & yes, the sizing is ridiculous. I just get annoyed when I look in there now.

ohthatbloodycat · 01/08/2021 00:56

I hate Zara!

PigeonPink · 01/08/2021 01:06

Zara is ridiculous. I’m a size 12 and I need XL from Zara. Size 12 is not XL! It’s smaller than average!

Southwestrunningmum · 01/08/2021 02:49

Ahhh thanks all I certainly do feel better on the sizing. It’s been a while since I’ve been there but was a recommendation as I wanted less structured/tailored shorts (eg stretchy to run round in the beach).

It does make me re think then as a shop I’d use regularly, with 2 children the days have past that I have time to leisurely go shopping and spend hours trying things on, on line I hate having to return. I like ordering items knowing it will fit

It’s a great tip on a tape measure in your handbag

OP posts:
DrManhattan · 01/08/2021 03:21

Quality is rubbish. Sizes all over too

Piesy · 01/08/2021 03:25

Apparently this is how you read Zara labels

To think Zara is unreasonable
ShortBacknSides · 01/08/2021 04:43

Zara sizing is weird. And often the cut of things is not really accommodating of a normal three dimensional body ( not enough ease in the shoulder and arm scye for example.

Som things are great but really their pattern cutting is weird.
