Posting on AIBU because I know the traffic is good and I'm not sure where else to post Confused
DD's intentions are to get the attached characters tattooed. I don't have a problem at all with the tattoo - she just wants to be absolutely sure that her choice isn't going to cause problems.
We have no idea what the characters mean, but we do know that they are from the Gorillaz (band) "Dare" artwork. I think that they might be Japanese, but they are horizontal rather than vertical so I'm wondering if it's the artist's interpretation of Japanese characters. I can't find much online at all.
Could anybody translate, please? Flowers in advance for thanks!

The advice to get a Japanese person to do the tattoo is a good point. There are times that child like writing might be appropriate but it's very easy to tell when the tattoo is done by someone who is not Japanese.

1forAll74 · 31/07/2021 19:19

No idea, it looks like a child's scribbled art work.

meido · 31/07/2021 19:20

This is a job for @TanteRose!

Greenmarmalade · 31/07/2021 19:25

I think it’s a good choice all round and not one she’ll likely regret. I hope your daughter enjoys her new challenges- what a fantastic perspective on life.

userxx · 31/07/2021 19:26

@Maggiesfarm you've not called the Op's daughter stupid or been a patronising twat. Fair enough, you don't like tattoos, many people do and many people have absolutely no regrets. Each to their own.

traumatisednoodle · 31/07/2021 19:29

We were all young once, yes, and pushed the boundaries but tattoos are around for a long time unless you can afford to have them removed. What might seem cool at 18 is less so at 38

Possibly however I am 45 and have wanted a tatoo (a very specific one) since I was 18, maybe this year......

AngryWhompingWillow · 31/07/2021 19:31

@ohdrearydrearyme

I speak both Chinese and Japanese and used to teach them. It IS 'dare' or 'challenge' as previous posters have said. The character on the left is NOT peach (which has tree radical on the left, whereas this character has hand radical, for anyone who might understand what I'm talking about.) However, do be aware that the actual aesthetics/proportions of the characters are a bit off, particularly the one on the right. They are very clearly done by someone who doesn't know how to write characters. Maybe try a different source or tattoo artist?
I tip my imaginary hat . Chinese AND Japanese! Amazing. Smile

At least you know now what it means @Itgetsthehoseagain Smile

Worstyear2020 · 31/07/2021 19:31

Nothing wrong with the word Challenge as tattoo, only that it is really badly written, like someone with a bad handwriting. Yes I can read it.

PeachyLife · 31/07/2021 19:34

OP the writing in Japanese character would mean Challenge

AngryWhompingWillow · 31/07/2021 19:35

@Zhx3

Makes me think of Sporty Spice's "girl power" tattoo!

Apologies once again, I didn't look at the characters closely enough and my Chinese is appalling.

I sometimes forget how pretty Mel C is. Smile

In fact, all the Spice Girls are, but when they were really big, she was the Tomboyish one. So I never noticed her much. She's really pretty though. Smile

As others have said, it means challenge in Japanese. If she's going to get it done, better to have it written vertically. Looks "off" written left to right like this as a tattoo. Also, as someone who is able to write this language, I'd strongly encourage your DD to find a tattoo artist who is able to write Japanese or Chinese characters. The 'handwriting' in the pic is really quite terrible. Failing this, find a version of this word in a calligraphy style she likes and have an excellent tattoo artist trace it and 'draw' it this way.

Kanaloa · 31/07/2021 19:40

Can she not just get the word ‘dare,’ maybe done in a cool font? To be honest I find it pretty ignorant to get a tattoo in a language you don’t speak or read at all. Different if you speak the language and read it well.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/07/2021 19:42

I can highly recoil Google Lens for stuff like this. Takea seconds

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/07/2021 19:42

PeachyLife · 31/07/2021 19:52

Mel C's tattoo mean girl power.

Mumdiva99 · 31/07/2021 19:57

I think it's great....and I'm an old.fart with no tattoos.

A friend of mine had Bowie on her back when she was about 18. Even at 50 she was still proud of it, because if what it meant to her at the time and what it still meant. We don't all grow and regret what we've done. Some of us embrace what we've become because of things we've done. And if she doesn't want it in 20 years.....well I'm sure laser removal will be easier and cheaper.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 31/07/2021 19:59

Why does she want it when she doesn't know what it means?

This is my thinking too. Personally, I hate tattoos, but this isn't about me here. I just wonder if it's the tattoo equivalent of the baby name Nevaeh, which as has often been mentioned on here, ends up with the name becoming de facto 'Nevaeh It's heaven Spelt Backwards'.

If you: want the esoteric value of it/special significance to yourself; only want it for yourself and want almost everybody else not to know what it means; or you maybe want the attention and the opportunity (which may get extremely wearing before long) to explain to everybody what it means, when they invariably ask, all well and good.

However, if it were me - I would never have a tattoo myself, but maybe if I had it on a t-shirt or piece of artwork - as a native English speaker living in England, if I wanted something saying 'Dare', I would have the word 'Dare' - in English. I don't get why you'd go to the trouble of having it in a language which neither you nor almost all of the people in your country/community speak, and end up having to explain it to everybody. If they see 'Dare' written on your arm (or wherever), they clearly get the bold message that you're wanting to portray, the nuances of which you can interpret themselves; if they have to ask you what it means (and maybe why you had it written in a foreign-to-you language), surely a great deal of the impact has then been lost?

Additionally, as a living language, I presume that Japanese is fluid and meanings or understandings of words may well change. How could you know that it wouldn't now/ever have different connotations to Japanese speakers? It's not a great analogy, but I'm thinking e.g. if a non-English speaker was a great admirer of hymn-writer Fanny Crosby, cookery expert Fanny Craddock or any other famous woman in history with that name, and so had 'Fanny' in English tattooed down their arm. They know what their completely sincere intention is, but any modern English speaker would maybe interpret it a little differently....

thesunwillout · 31/07/2021 20:04

It's a great song mainly sung by Shaun Ryder!

She needs to be really sure it's the best thing for a Gorillaz tattoo.

MyHairNeedsASnip · 31/07/2021 21:03

I think that because it's album artwork it's different to having a random Chinese word put on her.... and I was a teenager in the 90's and had a random Chinese symbol done on me for no good reason. I could have it covered but I'm in my 40's and it represents a point in time where I was daft and reckless and did stuff just because

ElBandito · 31/07/2021 21:07

I would have a windmill if I wanted a Gorillaz tattoo.

dementedma · 31/07/2021 21:23

A bit off topic but I got my first tattoo last week. I'm 57 and too old to care any more. But, hypocritically, trying to dissuade teen DS from getting one as he's still young and people change.

me4real · 31/07/2021 21:44

I like it and sounds like the meaning is ok.

me4real · 31/07/2021 21:45

@dementedma Oooh, what did you get? I've had several over the years and regret every one, sometimes fairly quickly after getting them. Grin

me4real · 31/07/2021 21:46

@MyHairNeedsASnip Do you know what it means now and is the meaning ok?

Hont1986 · 31/07/2021 21:54

if a non-English speaker was a great admirer of hymn-writer Fanny Crosby, cookery expert Fanny Craddock or any other famous woman in history with that name, and so had 'Fanny' in English tattooed down their arm

That's got me wondering if there are any foreign British comedy/cat lovers with "Mrs Slocombe's pussy" tattooed on their arm.
