Posting on AIBU because I know the traffic is good and I'm not sure where else to post Confused
DD's intentions are to get the attached characters tattooed. I don't have a problem at all with the tattoo - she just wants to be absolutely sure that her choice isn't going to cause problems.
We have no idea what the characters mean, but we do know that they are from the Gorillaz (band) "Dare" artwork. I think that they might be Japanese, but they are horizontal rather than vertical so I'm wondering if it's the artist's interpretation of Japanese characters. I can't find much online at all.
Could anybody translate, please? Flowers in advance for thanks!

Daughter says it's a shite design / isn't written properly but it's "Challenge / dare / defiance" Photo included for reference.

She also strongly advises your daughter against having any tattoo done without it being properly checked, thought about and then rechecked cos she's seen some tattoos that people thought were deep, meaningful and spiritual but actually said "Egg" and "Genitals"

Here is an article looking at cultural appropriation in connection with Japan and the Japanese. Talking about the BBC trailer for the Tokyo Games produced by a Japanese company.

theconversation.com/tokyo-olympics-branding-adds-to-stereotypical-view-of-japan-but-that-doesnt-make-it-appropriation-164674

Think it might help make the discussion a bit more nuanced.

Love Asian tatts but also scared of it not meaning what I want.

Kanaloa · 04/08/2021 22:52

What do you mean you love ‘Asian tatts?’ Literally just any tattoo in an Asian language, regardless of what it means? Just anything that looks vaguely ‘Asian.’

Typical talk from someone who likes tattoos.

The Japanese in particular do not seem to have the same sense of cultural appropropriation as is being discussed here.

I suspect most native Japanese would be baffled that there was an issue. They'd be more bothered about the fact it was a tattoo...

“Typical talk from someone who likes tattoos”

What the fuck is that supposed to mean?

VladmirsPoutine · 05/08/2021 11:10

I'm reminded of when Gwen Stefani went through a 'Harajuku girls' era in which she basically used these young Japanese women as stage props for her 'look'. Certain demographics really have no shame.

Certain demographics really have no shame.

Which?
