Posting on AIBU because I know the traffic is good and I'm not sure where else to post Confused
DD's intentions are to get the attached characters tattooed. I don't have a problem at all with the tattoo - she just wants to be absolutely sure that her choice isn't going to cause problems.
We have no idea what the characters mean, but we do know that they are from the Gorillaz (band) "Dare" artwork. I think that they might be Japanese, but they are horizontal rather than vertical so I'm wondering if it's the artist's interpretation of Japanese characters. I can't find much online at all.
Could anybody translate, please? Flowers in advance for thanks!

It’s easy not to see colour when you are the ‘dominant’ colour. It’s like a millionaire saying ‘money doesn’t matter! Money can’t buy happiness.’

And eating Chinese food is nothing like getting characters from a language you don’t speak or understand tattooed onto you. It’s more like if you cooked up chow mien and told everyone it was your cool, fun new dish called noodley-oodles.

Thank you. This thread, along with the racist attacking of BLM and blaming it for their own racism, is disgusting. It certainly shows me that racism is so entrenched in UK society that even posters who think they aren't racist cannot see how blatantly racist they are. Gaslighting BLM, comparing cultural appropriation to Chinese takeaway, I never thought people on here would be so blatantly ignorant, racist and hurtful.
Hopeisallineed · 02/08/2021 20:52

I’m sorry OP that your thread has taken such an extreme turn where people are throwing upsetting accusations at one another. I hope your daughter finds a tattoo she is proud of and happy with and one that means something important to her.

ProfessorSillyStuff · 02/08/2021 20:54

Seems you have a odd definition of racism to me. Please explain to me how I am a racist. I still don't understand. I thought racism is hatred based on ethnicity.

Maggiesfarm · 02/08/2021 20:57

NeonDreams, it makes me feel ashamed.

Kanaloa I agree with you.

Kanaloa · 02/08/2021 20:58

@ProfessorSillyStuff

I think it’s one of those things where if it has to be explained to you you’ll never really get it. Presumably you haven’t experienced someone using your culture as a novelty without showing it any level of respect or consideration.

Me too O.P. I'm a massive Gorillaz fan and think it's a really cool idea. Also I think the characters are badly written intentionally as if a child, drunken graffiti artist, or gaikokujin did it.
ProfessorSillyStuff · 02/08/2021 21:04

Have you watched minions?

Hopeisallineed · 03/08/2021 08:06

Do you mean me??? Everyone is too scared to post on this thread in case they randomly get shouted at for being racist. 😂

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/08/2021 09:30

It doesn't seen worth posting anymore, as the O P seems to have disappeared. Some of the things that have been said about her daughter have been astonishingly cruel and unfair, so I don't blame her for disappearing.

Flash back to Jamie Oliver's 'Jerk rice'. Disgraceful!

Only the racist people are getting called racist.

Explain how someone calling BLM activists racist isn't?

I wanted a tattoo until I saw this advert years ago. I think a tattoo on a young person looks fantastic but a rose on a young person could look like a weed in their later years! vimeo.com/23467771 hope the link opens!

Who gives a crap though? Your skin is likely to look like a wrinkled old bag when you’re elderly anyway regardless of how well you care for it. Never understood that point. I’m not going to refrain from doing something that I’ll enjoy for years and years of my youth just because if I make it to seventy it won’t look as good!
AllTheSingleLadiess · 03/08/2021 16:23

@Qwerty789

es, my concern would be that given increasing discussion of cultural appropriation this kind of 'characters from the mysterious race' tattoo will be widely seen as racist in a few years' time

Never mind a few years time, it's always been extremely dodgy and kinda racist to take another language and culture and use bits of it without understanding it....and when you literally don't even know what the characters mean, it's just not ok.

Do you think that men with Chinese style dragon tattoos feel like that? Somehow I'm thinking that they don't care. Aren't sugar skulls, dream catchers, feathers popular aesthetically rather than chosen for cultural reasons?
Qwerty789 · 03/08/2021 19:09

Well of course they don't care...thats the point Hmm

Kanaloa · 03/08/2021 19:31

If your best excuse for being culturally insensitive is that other people are also culturally insensitive do you not see why that’s an issue?

I would no sooner get a dream catcher or Chinese style dragon tattooed on me than I would get random Japanese characters on me.

Kanaloa · 03/08/2021 19:32

And it isn’t like this is the only way that the girl can get the tattoo she wants. She could just get the word dare in English, a language she understands and reads.

Hont1986 · 03/08/2021 19:36

Japanese people don't feel that it is culturally insensitive to get kanji tattoos. But they will laugh at inaccurate ones.

Qwerty789 · 03/08/2021 20:07

Have you asked them all?
Hopeisallineed · 03/08/2021 22:31

How many people thinking it’s culturally insensitive does it take to make it culturally insensitive? One/100/100 thousand? Genuine question.

malificent7 · 03/08/2021 22:38

The Gorilaz are an amazing band and Dare is a cool song so why not?!

yourestandingonmyneck · 03/08/2021 22:56

Op, I'm loving that she is a Gorillaz fan. I loved them in my youth, had no idea people still listened to them to be honest.

I think the tattoo is cool. However, there is an awful lot of scope to get something amazing (such as the windmill) so I would be tempted to give it a bit more thought.

Either way though, cool idea and I hope she enjoys the tattoo experience Smile

me109f · 03/08/2021 23:49

How ridiculous to have script tattooed in an unknown script. Even if you knew the language it is pretentious and you will be forever trying to explain what it means to all and sundry.

Personally I dislike tattoos, and if you have them at all they should be small, discretely located, and attractive.

A butterfly or rose on an ankle or buttock, or your blood group under your left armpit.

I watch Naked Attraction and I am just stunned with the appalling and tasteless tattoos that appear on that show. They are usually a feature of idiots, sexually alternative people and show-offs. Finally, they are a real problem at interview if you want respectable employment.

Hopeisallineed · 04/08/2021 07:38

Anyone that watches the absolute drivel that is naked attraction has no taste levels…that show is the epitome of tastelessness.
Idiots, Sexually alternative people and show offs? Wtf?!
