Should I complain about my examiner? So I took my 1st test on Wednesday and failed. There was major roadworks everywhere one being were they was ready to repaint the floor as there was no markings. This meaning I didn't no where to stop as I hadn't drove there before he said I failed on that part but i didn't know till the end of the test. With Covid he's supposed to say I failed straight away and take me back but he didn't. He was very rude and moody. He took the sat nav off the dashboard and threw it on the floor then at the end all he said was " well today you failed bye" then got out the car? My instructor argued on my behalf that I wasn't to no where to stop if there was no road markings and that's what they was supposed to do( road works) he said. She's a good driver but failed on that. I got an arsehole of a examiner that day he was very rude and made me feel like shit to be honest. I came home and I've cried since as test are so backlogged due to Covid I don't want to run into having to do my theory next year in September again. I got another test for DECEMEBER! Which is over 20 weeks away!😭
@RollaCola84.

I got 4 minors 1 major. I was 6 minutes away from my test finishing anyway. The examiner said to my instructor that other than the pause waiting in the road works I would of passed and that I can drive fine. I was shocked by this as he was such an arse before hand. Your telling me I'm a danger to the road and I didn't pass for this. There was one person infront of me no-one behind me I was causing and obstruction I wasn't in anyone's way. I was waiting for the first person to go ( he shouldn't of stopped) my own fault for copying him but in my own defence there wasn't anyone there to be a danger to.
You got a major, you failed because of a major, so although most of your driving was fine, you still performed a section dangerously, so no you aren't safe driver.
Instead of complaining make sure your instructor teaches you what you should have done in that scenario so you pass next time round

I have already accepted that I didn’t know that sat navs were now part of the test but we’re not when I passed. But in any event that is pretty ill relevant to the ops fail as she failed on her driving and nothing to do with having a sat nav or not. I was just curious as to why it was mentioned and then someone pointed out it was part of the test.

There are still drivers who don’t use them. I rarely do and usually only if going somewhere unknown at night.

@Mybabysmylife
I don't know why people think because someone made one mistake that there a danger and not ready

I would suggest your read the definition of a major fault. You did something potential dangerous and are not ready to be allowed to drive unsupervised. Going into your next test with the attitude that you did nothing wrong and mistakes are inevitable will not help you.

I'm so sorry for your experience ... Sounds awful. The examiner sounds soooo rude!

I had a nasty examiner once. So rude and grumpy and a total curmudgeon. This was the late 1990s and he was around 30 years older than me. (I was mid 20s.) Thing is, his attitude was so bad towards me, that I was nervous and anxious before I started.

He kept commenting negatively on everything I was doing, and said 'WHY are you driving so SLOWLY?!' when I was doing 25 in a 30 zone! Confused And he said - and this is the truth - though it's hard to believe now 'THIS is why I am so against WOMEN driving!' and sighed heavily, and turned away from me. He then proceeded to look out of the passenger window and not look at me, or what I was doing for the other 50% of the test.

When we got to the driving school, he sat there and scribbled on a sheet for a few minutes, and then said 'you have FAILED the test of competence to drive!' and practically threw the FAIL sheet at me.

I was too shocked to be upset. It was my 4th test, and the worst examiner I had had. When I got back to my instructor, she said 'On noooo, I wanted to CRY when I saw you had got Smithy! He is HORRIBLE. He shouldn't be allowed to do this job. He is SO rude and he does NOT think women should be driving.'

I passed the fifth test 3 months later!!!

Don't worry Mybabymylife I am sure you will be able to get a cancellation.

Good luck next time! Smile

It’s really shit but I think he was right to fail you as once you’ve passed your test, you are faced with situations like unexpected roadworks all the time. I came across temporary road traffic lights on my driving test, which were stuck on green on both sides so it was chaos with cars trying to push through a one way section. I had absolutely no idea what to do so just put my hand break on with hazards until it was clear of cars both ways, it was a horrible feeling Sad luckily I passed!

EBearhug · 31/07/2021 11:23

I am just envious when in my old days you had no idea where you would end up.

I'm not sure that's entirely true - we couldn't look up the routes, but I took my test in a fairly small town, and we all knew where the test centre was and which roads were likely to be used for reversing round the corner, emergency stops and so on, because there was a limited choice. I guess it might have been different in larger centres. Mind you, it might have been more realistic to drive out of town, have to manage a herd of cows across the road, following a tractor on a narrow road with high banks and so on...

Junkmail · 31/07/2021 11:30

During my (second) test (MAJOR faults on my first 🙈) my examiner took me down roads I had never seen and there was a really weird situation with a bus driving on the wrong side of the road and I honestly didn’t know what to do. I got through it safely but genuinely believed I had failed. I actually passed without any faults as the examiner said I handled it well. You don’t know what you’ll encounter either during the test or once you have passed so you need to be prepared to tackle potentially difficult and unfamiliar scenarios. I’m sorry but if you couldn’t deal with figuring out the roadworks you weren’t ready to pass.

Marmitemarinaded · 31/07/2021 11:32

Don’t waste your time op

You stand no chance. Absolutely NO chance in being successful.

The DVLA will never ever overrule an instructor retrospectively based on a failed candidates complaint

NEVER

eightyfourandahalf · 31/07/2021 11:38

We knew where the driving centre was, but with up to 3 students in the car, 2 in the back with instructors, and taking turn, it was a rather large area that could be covered in the test.

Clocktopus · 31/07/2021 11:43

Also, my friend had a lovely instructor and she hit the curb and he still passed her it just shows how some examiners do slide things.

Hitting the curb isn't an automatic fail. If you hit it slightly or bump against it you don't fail, you'd get a minor and the examiner would probably tell you at the end of the test to be more aware of where the curb is. It becomes a major if you hit it with force or you mount it as they're both dangerous actions.

Brefugee · 31/07/2021 12:00

OP is right to be 💯 disappointed that she's been failed on something out of the ordinary.

But as pp have said it isn't out of the ordinary at all, it is horribly ordinary. And the thing is that to be a safe driver you have to anticipate etc and handle situations you don't expect.

Chalk it up to experience and practice as much as you can in a variety of situations before the next test, OP, and you'll be fine.
