Driving test fail.

Should I complain about my examiner? So I took my 1st test on Wednesday and failed. There was major roadworks everywhere one being were they was ready to repaint the floor as there was no markings. This meaning I didn't no where to stop as I hadn't drove there before he said I failed on that part but i didn't know till the end of the test. With Covid he's supposed to say I failed straight away and take me back but he didn't. He was very rude and moody. He took the sat nav off the dashboard and threw it on the floor then at the end all he said was " well today you failed bye" then got out the car? My instructor argued on my behalf that I wasn't to no where to stop if there was no road markings and that's what they was supposed to do( road works) he said. She's a good driver but failed on that. I got an arsehole of a examiner that day he was very rude and made me feel like shit to be honest. I came home and I've cried since as test are so backlogged due to Covid I don't want to run into having to do my theory next year in September again. I got another test for DECEMEBER! Which is over 20 weeks away!😭

Your instructor should have taken you on the test routes prior to your test so you are directing your anger at the wrong person really. If they had done this you would have known where to stop. But there must have been other indicators too surely? Road signs, traffic lights, junctions, roundabouts? It sounds like he was correct to fail you as you sound like you would have been dangerous on your own if you couldn't gauge for yourself where to stop

daphnedoo12 · 31/07/2021 09:25

I drove through road works on my test, it is hard and I think the way he spoke to you was unreasonable but if you've failed, you've failed. Book another test and keep your head held high and go again. Best of luck, don't let it hold you back

Proudboomer · 31/07/2021 09:25

Well every days a school day. I never knew that but then I passed my test years ago. My son passed only two years ago and he never had to use a sat nav.

Unanananana · 31/07/2021 09:25

MrsFin · 31/07/2021 09:26
@MrsFin I understand. But you cannot cover 21 test routes when Covid hit every couple of months and forced lockdown so then I was having over 6 month of no lessons etc.
Test routes are on line. You could have driven them without your instructor - with a friend or family member.

Regardless - you shouldn't have passed if you weren't able to navigate unknown roadworks.

Mybabysmylife · 31/07/2021 09:26

@Shadedog yes! I understand he was so rude but told my instructor I don't need no more lessons my driving was great it was just
The road work situation. So I was really confused. I've payed for the cancellation app. Im not really bothered I failed I know I can do it again it's the fact I have to wait months for another test. Thankyou:)

He does sound rude but honestly, while it’s really shit and disappointing that you failed, it doesn’t sound like you should’ve passed.
I expect tensions were somewhat heightened which didn’t help the situation. Better luck next time.

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 31/07/2021 09:26

My first driving test was awful, a rude intimidating man. He made comments all the way around that ended up giving me nerves. For example He inspected the car and implied there were issues (they weren’t and it was way beyond was was normal), said stuff like ‘hmm, a pond- don’t hit the ducks’ and really insisted I do a three point turn between a lamppost and a tree (I did ask to move along a bit!).I wrote a factual letter recounting it and they actually set the test aside and gave me the next free.
It may have helped though that I had a second examiner in the back, I think he was training or something, who may have backed up my account. If it was more than just one thing write a factual letter about it, otherwise people like that continue in their behaviour- often particularly towards women.

Mybabysmylife · 31/07/2021 09:28

@eightyfourandahalf I don't understand why most of you think I'm lying on the satnav situation now I'm lying that I didn't know I had to
Stop? There was people brought out that morning to re paint the roads due to them been completely work down and not there. A car infront of me was sat waiting so I waited but he said because I waited I failed. But how was I supposed to go when he was infront of me and he waited. Maybe I shouldn't of copied but there was nothing more I could do with him infront.

(I passed the second normal test with just one minor)

Blippibloppi · 31/07/2021 09:29

I think your instructor is to blame here too - we drove roads round the test centre for weeks when I took mine. If there were road works, he'd have known and told me about it/taken me through them so I knew what to do.

Mybabysmylife · 31/07/2021 09:29

@Unanananana what are you talking about? Who said I spoke to the examiner like crap? I wasn't allowed to
Speak during test due to Covid! You need to read things properly.

Why did you have a sat nag on during a driving test?

Love the sound of a sat nag.

“Turn left in 500 yards on to x road”
“Don’t forget to turn left after 400 yards”
“Remember you have to turn left after 300 yards and you should have your indicator on by now”

Mybabysmylife · 31/07/2021 09:30

@MrsFin I cannot drive with a family member as everyone I know had manual cars. I do automatic.

OP, my daughter failed her 1st driving test and cried and was very upset, so, I can relate to some extent.

Luck plays some part in such situations unfortunately.
However, use time before your next test to practice more and drive on different routes and in differeng weather conditions.

Good luck for next time!

FlibbertigibbetArmadillo · 31/07/2021 09:31

You know you can have your instructor come on the test and sit in the back as a witness? Maybe you can't currently due to covid but you certainly could when I took my test. My instructor always encouraged people to take this option as he said it made examiners behave more rationally. Worth considering when you retake?

Mybabysmylife · 31/07/2021 09:32

@Blippibloppi I understand this but the road works wasn't to be known as they came that morning they was only painting the floor signs

OP posts:
Mybabysmylife · 31/07/2021 09:33

@FlibbertigibbetArmadillo hi. You cannot have your instructor come on test due to Covid now.

@wantmorenow

That's shit. On a more positive note, download one of the apps that allows you to book a cancellation, they're great. It won't be 20 weeks unless you are very unlucky.
Maybe it's different where you are but a friend of mine is in the same situation for her DS and getting nothing on an app like that. I don't know the name of it or if there's more than one but his re-test is about 5 months after he failed and there's nothing else

I don't know why posters are saying that driving all the test routes would have stopped this, road works literally appear overnight. You can't drive them all on the day of the test.

icedcoffees · 31/07/2021 09:35

I think you failed for the right reasons but your instructor should have warned you that there were roadworks on one of the test routes and told you how to handle it accordingly.

Part of driving is dealing with unexpected hazards like roadworks or accidents that force you to divert elsewhere or do things differently.

However that doesn't mean your examiner behaved properly and I'm sorry he made you feel shit Sad fingers crossed for a cancellation so you pass soon!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 31/07/2021 09:36

I’ll make no comment about whether you were or weren’t unreasonable, but it is (or was) possible to complain about an examiner.

I took a test and the examiner had someone overseeing him as well. It was a small car, he got into the back and pretty much obscured the rear view. Having two of them was even more anxiety inducing, especially as I didn’t know it would happen and hadn’t been asked or informed. I complained and had the next one free.

toomanyplants · 31/07/2021 09:36
@HurryUpAndWait23 first of all. Who you speaking to like that? Yes he did throw it on the floor and also sighed and made me feel really uncomfortable why would a lie about that? Remove yourself.
I'm sorry that you failed your test, and understand how disappointing this is, but "remove yourself"
Seriously wtf, could a slight attitude adjustment on your part help you next time?

icedcoffees · 31/07/2021 09:37

X-post about your instructor not knowing, sorry.

Mybabysmylife · 31/07/2021 09:37

Hi everyone. I would
Just like to address certian people that are coming for me been rude to others that are calling me a liar and making things up such as " i don't blame the examiner for throwing the satnav if you spoke to him like shit" I dont know where that came from but I never spoke to the examiner in the car. He asked me not to due to Covid. I was not rude before I got in the car I walk the other side from him so I was stood next to him on the path and he told me "well get on the path then". I am reacting to people on here calling me a liar. If you are Been told by total strangers that you are lying what do you think your reaction would be? I've not been nasty one bit as someone stated. I have retaliated to people calling me things WHICH I haven't done to anyone else. I failed for a reason I get that I was just annoyed on how long the next test is when I've waited a year and half and changed my first test 6 times due to Covid. I don't think it's fair.

Yes but you need to be able to react safely to road conditions on any road, not just test routes, however many test routes. As you’ve found out, road conditions change all the time! Safe driving is very reactive, rather than rehearsed.
