To wonder what the hell I just saw?

Looking at the moon through some new binoculars and it had a line (shadow) across the bottom bit. I've never seen anything like it!

My sister is staying atm and she saw it too so I wasn't imaging things. Nothing wrong with the binoculars and the line doesn't show up when looking at other light things.

It was very clear and distinct, looked like something was casting a shadow over the surface. I've attached a very terrible diagram 😂

(black is just where the moon is in shadow, red line is where the line/shadow was)

To wonder what the hell I just saw?

Sorry I have no idea what you saw

JollyHolly30 · 30/07/2021 10:19

You obviously didn't know about it being the same phase of the moon everywhere, or you wouldn't have said:

"The squiggles are just where the moon is dark - it's not full here. (trying to colour in on my phone and it's not the best, sorry) The red line is where the shadow/line/whatever the heck I saw was."

😁

JollyHolly30 · 30/07/2021 10:23

@ittakes2

I can see what you mean, its just above the red line more obvious on the left. I think you might make it easier for others to see if you just do a thin black circle around it. You know what you are looking at so its probably jumping out at you but I really had to peer to find what you meant. I am guessing you are wondering if its a structure someone has made as its so straight.
😂

@ineedaholidayandwine

Could it have been the ISS? Maybe from the angle you were stood and the angle of the space station it appeared to look like a line?
No…the ISS is visually, even through binoculars really small (basicallyit’s a fast moving dot never a line)…and it doesn’t leave a trail…

FWIW some clever folks have imaged ISS crossing the Moon..

Chwaraeteg · 30/07/2021 10:29

I've googled this phenomenon and found some pictures that look like what you are describing. Apparently this usually happens when a jet has left a contrail accross the sky and you are looking through the moon with the contrail in the way.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 30/07/2021 10:33

It was an alien space ship. We are all doomed.

The moon in the picture is full.

Op, I live in an area with little light pollution at night. I saw the moon looking not dissimilar this week but genuinely can’t remember whether it was Monday or Tuesday. I remember it was 1.26am when I saw the most peculiar moon I’ve ever seen. It lasted about five minutes before turning bright orange for a minute or so only. The house was illuminated in an orange glow. I was so fascinated, I didn’t even photograph it.
The reason I was awake was because my two dogs, who generally are unconscious all night, were up, pacing and nervous. There was no reason for it, despite a forensic search of the garden and checking of CCTV.
We blamed it on the moon!

FloofyCushion · 30/07/2021 10:47

It was 'the boy' running out of petrol Grin

No idea op but I do love natural phenomena. I learned about Brinicles on Tiktok yesterday. They are fascinating!

Really ? You use THAT insult ?[/quote]
Very sexist

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 30/07/2021 10:58

It’s the line where the bottom bit of the moon is hinged, so it can open up for the Clangers to receive their Ocado delivery.

Benjispruce5 · 30/07/2021 11:08

She said the red line is where the shadow was!!!!

That sounds like an atmospheric effect (refraction was mentioned upthread), similar to what causes red sky at night /in the morning, you do sometimes also get the Moon (and sun) appearing to be strangely shaped when near the horizon, again due to the effect of the Earth’s atmosphere.

This is the strangest post 😂😂

Lupinhere37 · 30/07/2021 11:38

@notimagain that’s interesting; thank you for that info! I’m going to have a bit of a Google later, as we’ve been talking about this all week.

Sillysuzie · 30/07/2021 11:57

OMG!!! op was right about the line. Check the news!!!!! It was a crack!!! The moon has cracked in half!!!
What will happen to us 😱😱😱😱

YetAnotherSpartacus · 30/07/2021 11:58

This is the strangest post

It has certainly attracted some complete idiots who think they are funny.

AngryWhompingWillow · 30/07/2021 12:13

@QuestionableMouse Sorry OP. I don't get it. What was it you actually saw? Confused (I may be a bit thick sorry...) Blush

supermoonrising · 30/07/2021 12:27

It looks exactly like the moon with a shitty red line across it. Am I missing something.

A shadow in the shape of a line across the moon. Not sure what caused it.

Miyuki · 30/07/2021 12:34

Who knows. We'll find out tonight when the moon comes back...

Anyway it probably caused by Covid. Or the vaccine. Or a cat.

QOD · 30/07/2021 12:42

i can see a dogs face in the moon surface ...
