To change my mind about a car journey in the last minute

So, my friend invited me at the last minute to her hen do in Brighton this weekend- they arranged a small group of friends one of them pulled out at the last minute and she asked me if I was free this weekend and I am and I have never been away for a hen do so I said yes! I will be sharing a room with one if her friends that I never met before and my friend also said she could give me a lift to Brighton as she is driving - I thought great as the train would cost me about £60 alone apart from all other expenses that came unexpectedly anyways- I texted the lady introduced myself and asked how she was getting there she said I am welcome to join her all fine until here and she added that she has a mini roadster that I'd pack light - not good with cars so I googled and saw that it is a soft top car and very small- my problem is I am extremely nervous passenger- my husband puts me at the back when we drive long distance - I thought about this might be a bad idea to join a car journey but then I thought what the heck I will share the room with the lady and I thought to suck it up and do it but when I saw the car picture it really scares me the fa t that we will be in a small car with lots if lorries on the road, and if she likes fast driving I am buggered! Shall I just say I decided to take train or text her to say about my anxiety- she will think I am a weirdo
Or just take the journey and maybe it would help my anxiety about the roads and speed etc
Sorry about the long post

@therocinante GrinGrinexactly that! It is almost committing suicide going out driving, mad stuff going on traffic no rules, or no one really cares so I was a very confident driver then and here to be fair everyone adheres the rules, much calmer etc but I lost my plot with driving - can't really explain! My husband can't believe me either but then I started this anxious passenger moods and got worse in time now he knows LOL

Haha yeah I guess there you were always used to the chaos and then going into a completely different driving environment might have just triggered something weird in your brain and now you're like "oh no, this is different and scary". I reckon you'd be a great candidate for CBT or even hypnotherapy!

My poor husband HATES driving me anywhere now and I don't blame him - I am a fake-braking, gasping, anxious nightmare, if someone was doing that while I drove I'd pull over and refuse to go any further so bless him for persevering... I might try going in the back though, see if it helps me feel less like I have any control because then maybe I'll stop changing imaginary gears haha Grin

@therocinante you are describing me! I have those imaginary gas and brakes too, my eyes all over the place looking out for danger, road signs exactly if someone was a passenger like me when I am driving I would throw them out Grin(of course exaggerating) but a few times when we were driving to Cornwall, we switched places with my daughter LoL I went to the backside! I tried CBT not really worked! I booked a hypnotherapy session he tried tapping treatment charged £90 and did nothing to me! So I gave up

This is not a journey with someone you have been in a car with before? So reasonable to have some concerns. Take the train.

Selok · 30/07/2021 22:33

@newnortherner111 I haven't even met before, but for the hen do we will share the room thought might be a good idea to go together so we get to know each other but then the reality hit- the anxiety- I told her I'd take the train something came up in the morning I had to say

UPDATE: I am glad I took the train as the lady said it rained a lot in M25 it was so difficult to drive argghhhhh-that would have killed me slowly! But all in all it was a fabulous weekend, all the ladies are lovely so is the new lady and we made a perfect pair as we got along so well exchanged numbers etc such a great time I had. And thank you all for taking your time to respond here xx
