Genuinely not sure if I'm over reacting. I won't be sending a complaint or anything, but took my DC's to see the new Space Jam film. It's a certificate U.

They have loads of Warner Brothers characters watching a basketball game in the background.
Baring in mind, this is a kids film, I was a bit surprised to see Penny-wise and characters from A Clockwork Orange. Knowing that those films are about, AIBU to think they shouldn't be featured in a kids film?

Bring back Pepe

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 29/07/2021 20:41

As long as they weren't killing people in the film I don't think its an issue.

TheMirrorAndTheLight · 29/07/2021 20:41

Did they kill anyone in the film?

WaterIsBest · 29/07/2021 20:41

Thats the point

Adults find it amusing,

Child dont understand

There are alot of things like this in kids movies these days!

OneTC · 29/07/2021 20:42

YABU

Thorilicious · 29/07/2021 20:42

No, didn't kill anyone. Just watching the game, and looking creepy Grin

We've just been to watch it and I thought the same thing!! Plus, the film was absolutely dog shit!

Thorilicious · 29/07/2021 20:43

Fair enough, as said, I'm not complaining or anything, just a bit surprised to see them. Probably to do with my clown phobia which came from watching the original IT Grin

Thorilicious · 29/07/2021 20:44

@PotatoCat I enjoyed it, but I haven't seen the first one, so nothing to compare it to.

Characters from a clockwork orange?

A film famously incredibly violent and including brutal rape????

No the children won't get the reference.

What are they saying to the adults who do? Esp the women??!!

They could have chosen any film... Why this one?

Baffled and... Why?

LubaLuca · 29/07/2021 20:46

They're just funny-looking people to children, as long as they're not 'in character'

or an important part in the film that is. Children aren't going to bother researching the unimportant filler characters to find out the backstory of The Droogs.

NiceGerbil · 29/07/2021 20:50

Just googling as I'm just...???!!!

'YouTuber and film critic Mathew Buck also highlighted another bizarre brief cameo in the film, this time from one of the nymphomaniac nuns who featured in Ken Russell's controversial and heavily cut film The Devils.

"Wait, so Warner Bros. is infamously afraid of ever-releasing Ken Russell's The Devils in an uncut form, but will have the nymphomaniac nuns from it do a cameo in Space Jam: A New Legacy?"'

suspiria777 · 29/07/2021 20:50

At least R Kelly isn't in this one.

If I watch a film with my kids i do not wanted to be suddenly reminded of an film including sexual violence and extreme violence.

I try to avoid films where women are raped or violently sexually assaulted.

Why the hell have they chucked a reference to that particular film in?

Veggiepotamus · 29/07/2021 21:26

It’s a very weird choice. I don’t think my kids noticed. They might if we watched it multiple times at home, so I would
Probably avoid them.
Didn’t mind penny wise so much but including the droogs seemed v odd to me

NiceGerbil · 29/07/2021 21:36

Not much danger of the children making any connections (I hope!).

I would love to know why they chose that reference though. Out of all the films in the world.

Why remind the adults suddenly of extreme violence and rape?!

And it's so famous plenty of parents who haven't seen it would recognise the reference and know that it's famous for violence and sexual violence.

Apparently they took Pepe out because of overtones of sexual harrassment so are the droogs a comment on that? Maybe?

FartnissEverbeans · 29/07/2021 22:01

It was so weird!

Rick and Morty’s appearance was also completely inappropriate.

And following the internal logic of the movie, there must actually be a Clockwork Orange planet somewhere in the serververse or whatever tf it was, which is not a nice thought

Quirrelsotherface · 29/07/2021 22:48

Didn't see Pennywise, neither did the kids as they'd have been beside themselves with glee, seeing a character they aren't meant to. They mentioned Rick and Morty though but they weren't doing or saying anything bad so I can't get worked up about it I'm afraid. The inclusion of them all is quirky, we all loved the film. Simple, fun and full of action

NiceGerbil · 29/07/2021 22:50

'The inclusion of them all is quirky, we all loved the film. Simple, fun and full of action'

Have you seen a clockwork orange? Or the film nuns which apparently is also referenced?

NiceGerbil · 29/07/2021 22:50

Sorry the devil's.

HippeePrincess · 29/07/2021 22:52

Quirrelsotherface · 29/07/2021 22:53

I just don't take offence at every single darn thing, particularly to do with art. It would stress me out too much and life is short.

NiceGerbil · 29/07/2021 22:53

Extract the devil's plot

'Laubardemont summons the lunatic inquisitor Father Pierre Barre, a "professional witch-hunter," whose interrogations actually involve depraved acts of "exorcism", including the forced administration of enemas to his victims. Sister Jeanne claims that Grandier has bewitched her, and the other nuns do the same. A public exorcism erupts in the town, in which the nuns remove their clothes and enter a state of "religious" frenzy. Duke Henri de Condé (actually King Louis in disguise) arrives, claiming to be carrying a holy relic which can exorcise the "devils" possessing the nuns. Father Barre then proceeds to use the relic in "exorcising" the nuns, who then act as though they have been cured – until Condé/Louis reveals the case allegedly containing the relic to be empty. With this falsehood revealed, both the possessions and the exorcisms continue unabated, eventually descending into a massive orgy in the church in which the disrobed nuns remove the crucifix from above the high altar and sexually assault it.'

NiceGerbil · 29/07/2021 22:54

Extract a clockwork orange plot

'In a futuristic Britain, Alex DeLarge is the leader of a gang of "droogs": Georgie, Dim and Pete. One night, after getting intoxicated on drug-laden "milk-plus", they engage in an evening of "ultra-violence", which includes a fight with a rival gang. They drive to the country home of writer Frank Alexander and trick his wife into letting them inside. They beat Alexander to the point of crippling him, and Alex rapes Alexander's wife while singing "Singin' in the Rain". The next day, while truant from school, Alex is approached by his probation officer, PR Deltoid, who is aware of Alex's activities and cautions him.

Alex's droogs express discontent with petty crime and want more equality and high-yield thefts, but Alex asserts his authority by attacking them. Later, Alex invades the home of a wealthy "cat-lady" and bludgeons her with a phallic sculpture while his droogs remain outside. On hearing sirens, Alex tries to flee but Dim smashes a bottle in his face, stunning Alex and leaving him to be arrested. With Alex in custody, Deltoid gloats that the cat-lady died, making Alex a murderer. He is sentenced to fourteen years in prison.'

Quirrelsotherface · 29/07/2021 22:55

Space Jam to that! Happy days.
