Caught neighbours using my garden

I have a block of flats next to my house and I thought for a while things have been moved in my garden and it seemed a bit weird. I’ve got a lock on the gate and it’s always locked. So over the weekend I’ve installed a small out door camera under my guttering which records the whole back garden.

So I’ve come home tonight after work (I work the late shift) and found two cigarette butts on the path by my seating area. So I checked the camera and the neighbors have climbed my wall and been sitting in my garden from 2pm until 8pm using my seating and table. To say I’m annoyed is an understatement but how to I confront them as they aren’t the friendliest of people at the best of times. So I guess they’ve been doing this since the nice weather began.

Unfortunately it’s not difficult to see i’m out as I have to drive to work and so once my cars not there they obviously know I’m out.

I just don’t know how to approach this as I’m a single woman and just concerned it’ll escalate but I can’t allow this what would you all do? I thought maybe a note through their door asking them to not use it anymore. They haven’t seen the camera but now I wonder how long it’s been going on.

Can you take the garden furniture inside if it’s not too big? If so I would for a few days that you are not planning to use it yourself. It should subtly give them the message that you know what’s been going on without having to confront them.

This is an excellent idea.

@AddsVsGeorgs

100% Go out Friday, at normal time

Sit and wait

Do not tell the police they are your CK neighbours

Literally say you are miles away and uv seen intruders in your garden….

Thats the only way your going to get rid of them without any come back.

I’m going to do this I can turn on the notifications for the camera I only have them off as I’m not allowed my phone in work. I just can’t believe someone would be so cheeky. The seating was made by a good friend had designed it all himself and cost a lot to make but for someone to just decide it’s ok to use other people’s stuff annoys me

That's really creepy of them. They need confronting by the police.

Leftbutcameback · 27/07/2021 00:30

Agree with the suggestion about calling the police. It’s not nice at all. Not on.

fluffedup · 27/07/2021 00:30

If you put something flimsy on top of the wall, such as a bit of trellis, that makes it harder to climb and if they do carry on climbing it, it will probably break off. That makes what they've done criminal damage rather than merely trespass, so you can then show the film to the police.

If you grow a bramble or climbing rose (the ones with thorns) trained over the top of the wall, that will make climbing over much harder.

Have a look at the outside of the wall - is there anything there that makes it easier to climb, that can be removed? Such as bits missing from the wall that create a toe-hold?

Can you plant thorny bushes such as hawthorn or pyracanthus on the other side of the wall? If there is space for bushes, ask the council - they will probably let you if you explain what happened, especially if you say you will provide the bushes yourself and you aren't expecting them to provide them. We were allowed to in a similar situation even though the land was not in our garden.

I know far more about this than I ever wanted to know.

Weird21 · 27/07/2021 00:31

I can’t unfortunately it’s all made attached to a pagoda I can take the cushions in but the seating is permanent

Anti climb paint. Though I would accidentally forget to put up a warning notice for a few days.........

JungleBeats · 27/07/2021 00:35

Bloody hell, that's a new level of CF(ary).

I'd be tempted to get a two way speaker and shout at them to get out your garden while you were out.

memberofthewedding · 27/07/2021 00:35

One of my security cameras showed pictures of a neighbour dumping rubbish onto my garden. I printed the thumbnails onto one side of an A4. On the back I printed a message:-

"Fly tipping is a criminal offence punishable by heavy fines. You have 24 hours to clear up this mess before I inform the police and send them these pictures."

Put it through his door. He was pictured at 6.15 next day clearing it up. However one bag had burst and there were bits all over the grass. A few days later my nephew and a large intimidating looking mate went around and forced him to pick up every last bit and then appologise to me. They told him that if he did anything else to annoy me they would visit him again. Only next time they would not be so friendly.

Do you know where these people live? Message with thumbnails through the door should do the trick.

I have a huge holy bush at the front I could move round it’s in a big pot but I have room to plant it where they’re climbing over. I think looking at the footage they’re bringing something with them to climb on as I’m 5 foot 10 and the walls higher than me. They sort of appeared high up from the other side but it’s just grass there so they’re definitely using something that side. My side they used the fence at the back to get a foot hold but they didn’t climb the fence as they would end up breaking it as it’s not really strong enough to hold a lot of weight

😲 that’s completely outrageous!! I too would be livid OP! Definitely go with the pp suggestion about Friday.

Leftbutcameback · 27/07/2021 00:39

That’s a worry if they are using a ladder or similar. I would be having a chat with the neighbourhood policing team as it makes you vulnerable

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 27/07/2021 00:39

Tractor grease all along the top of the wall and gate. It's a bastard to get off clothes etc, that's if you can even get it off.

Unfortunately the whole street knows where they live they’re housing association and they give the tenants a really bad name all the other tenants are lovely but this family are a nightmare, their son smashed the roof of my other neighbors greenhouse last summer but if anyone says anything they just start about how we should be great full we can afford to buy our house etc ive just tried to stay out of their way as much as possible. The other tenants have complained to the housing association and got nowhere unfortunately they’re just awful and the dad start with threats if you say anything.

Does you camera have a speaker so you can shout at them when you catch them next ?
Also I would report to the police.

Terhou · 27/07/2021 00:45

Syrup on the chair seats?

Weird21 · 27/07/2021 00:48

They know Im single unfortunately that’s probably why they’re doing they’ve been a nightmare for the last two years but this is a whole new level. I’ve bought my cushions in and covered the chairs with the covers so hopefully they’ll think twice tomorrow

pour something sticky all over chairs like honey.. or wet paint.....Broken glass perhaps on tarp on area where they lower themselves.. or build open compost there. but also sharp bushes if you can buy larger ones .
FakingMemories · 27/07/2021 00:52

I’d put a sign that says “smile! You’re on camera” on the table.

I sympathize OP. It’s horrible, we lived in a place once that had the largest garden in the street by a considerable amount. It’s just the way the houses and gardens were done many years ago - not something we did. The neighbours took out a fence panel so that their children could use our garden whilst we were at work. We discovered it when we found bicycle tracks from their garden through ours and then found the fence panel that they used to slide in and out of place. We confronted them about it and the wife initially denied any knowledge of this so we showed them the tracks and then the husband got very shirty with us saying we don’t deserve such a big garden if we are at work all day and don’t use it.

houselikeashed · 27/07/2021 01:00

Oh yes - compost!
Can you put some fresh manure on your garden right where they climb over?
In all seriousness though, I hope you can get it sorted. Really good idea to get a camera.

I think a trellis or spikes sound like a practical solution.

JacquelineCarlyle · 27/07/2021 01:01

I hope you get sorted Op - they really are horrible!

acatcalledjohn · 27/07/2021 01:01

Remote controlled/motion activated sprinkler system.

Cheeky fuckers.

victoriaspongecake · 27/07/2021 01:02

I’d be tempted to drive the car out of sight then walk back and sit in the garden.
They will get a shock when they see you and won’t be expecting you.

7wondersofthewold · 27/07/2021 01:04

Agree with @Leftbutcameback that Neighbourhood Policing Team would be my first point of call. Explain it makes you feel unsafe and you know it is the neighbours because you caught them on camera.

Hopefully the police can go round and tell them it's not on. Neighbours will know the police have them clocked which should lower risk of them retaliating.
