Sorry I know it’s not really AIBU but need urgent help.
I was at work and had parked my care off road this morning. Just came back to drive home but it’s submerged in water. If I open the car door some water will definitely come in. I am not sure what to do! Will i be able to drive tomorrow once water level is down or do I need to call insurance. Any advice please.

Where did you park it?!

Whammyyammy · 25/07/2021 18:22

Are u in AA or RAC?

Wombat64 · 25/07/2021 18:22

Yiu need it recovered & the engine checked for water ingress. Starting it would send water around the engine & is probably not a good idea.

PotteringAlong · 25/07/2021 18:22

And no, I don’t imagine it will be drivable. All the electrics will have been frazzled for one.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 25/07/2021 18:22

Do not start it. If you do, water will be sucked into the engine and its fucked. That's why they say never let a car stall in floodwater, because you can't start it again.

Whammyyammy · 25/07/2021 18:23

My hubby just said what ever u do, don't tru and start it whilst it submerged, as it could suck in water and ruin your engine

Tubelight · 25/07/2021 18:23

It’s on off street parking , close to my clients house.

absolutely DO NOT START IT while its in water. Get it recovered, and get the engine thoroughly checked for water before you do anything.

If you start it while there is a chance of water, you will flood and damage the engine, possibly irrepairably.

Tubelight · 25/07/2021 18:26

I am with AA. All roads near me are flooded and tubes are down too. I am going to be stuck here.

Definitely don't start it - that's the worst thing you could do.

How on earth did it end up submerged?

NiceGerbil · 25/07/2021 18:28

There's been a lot of rain lately. Is probably how. See Germany etc I'm sure there's been flooding here.

BecauseMyRingBurnsSheila · 25/07/2021 18:33

As others say DO NOT START IT. Similar happened to me and I walked 3 miles home in the pouring rain. Walked back the next day and it started! Left it running for 30 minutes to dry the engine out and then it drove fine for the next year till I sold it.

BecauseMyRingBurnsSheila · 25/07/2021 18:34

BTW the floodwater had receded by the next day in my case.

icedcoffees · 25/07/2021 18:35

Ah, we've only had about one day of rain in six weeks Grin
lannistunut · 25/07/2021 18:36

If you are in the AA, phone them and they will hopefully help?

Marty13 · 25/07/2021 18:36

Can you call someone to pick you up ? If not and roads cut off you may be looking at a hotel stay for tonight, if there's one nearby.

NiceGerbil · 25/07/2021 18:38

Bloody hell where are you?

It's pissing it down right now and don't think will stop for a while.

PieceOfString · 25/07/2021 18:39

Don't start the car if the air intake is submerged you'll ruin the engine. Where on earth are you!

ApolloandDaphne · 25/07/2021 18:40

I definitely would not try to start it. Call out road side recovery.

Tubelight · 25/07/2021 18:47

I am near Stratford shopping centre, it’s flooded too. Drainage rescue people are here so water should be down soon.

justasking111 · 25/07/2021 18:47

You won't be the only one stuck. If it's getting deeper leave the area now go find somewhere safe

pleasedonttextmyman · 25/07/2021 18:48

Sympathy OP, I am South East and there's a record number of flooded roads here today!

People keep posting warnings on social media, it's carnage.

SirGawain · 25/07/2021 18:52

Get the car professionally recovered and report to your insurance company, they should cover this.

PigletJohn · 25/07/2021 18:53

sadly, there is a strong chance it will be an insurance write-off, depending how "submerged" it is.

Call your insurers.

They may be able to assess quickly when they see how deep the water was.

Maybe collect all the personal belongings out of it, and get a lift or taxi home.
