For a painter and decorator to paint a bedroom in your house (an older property, so not totally straightforward new-build walls!). The room measures 17'8" x 11'3".
It would be a paint refresh on the ceiling, a little bit of touching up of some of the woodwork, and the walls to be painted (one colour above the picture rail, and another colour underneath).
It's the first time I've had any paintwork done in my place, and so wasn't sure what to expect.
First painter and decorator has just come by and quoted £450, inclusive of everything. I am expecting two more quotes later.
This struck me as steep but I have nothing to compare it to as yet!

Should have said: lighthearted post, done mainly out of curiosity and boredom!

The rule of thumb for tradespeople at the moment is to double everything. A real shortage! Are they putting lining paper up or are walls ok?

DroopyClematis · 25/07/2021 17:48

Sounds reasonable to me.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 25/07/2021 17:49

200 - a days work

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 25/07/2021 17:50

Sorry pressed send too soon - 200 is a days work roughly although that’s steep depending on where you are
Is he /she saying it’s a two day job?

cervixuser · 25/07/2021 17:50

that would be between 2/3 days work for my painter/decorator with preparation etc - he charges £150 per day.

Donationwitheverypack · 25/07/2021 17:51

What do you mean by touching up the woodwork?

It's more than a day's work to do that job properly IMO and paint is expensive. I think £450 is fair.

ohthatbloodycat · 25/07/2021 17:51

Ok, thanks. Lining paper already up and in decent order, so he would be repainting that.

OP posts:
Streamside · 25/07/2021 17:51

Are you supplying the paint? It doesn't seem expensive at all.Its going to be at least two days work.

HelloDulling · 25/07/2021 17:52

Sounds about right. A paint refresh on the ceiling is painting the ceiling, touching up some of the wood work is painting the door, windows, skirting, picture rail. Materials will be, what, £60? £70? How many days did they think it would take?

BikeRunSki · 25/07/2021 17:52

About £500 including materials. That’s a fairly big room.

nancy75 · 25/07/2021 17:52

Sounds about right depending on the amount of prep needed.
You can get a wide range of prices for a decorating job but there are professional decorators & then there are blokes with a van & a paintbrush calling themselves decorators.
My dad owns a commercial decorating company - he won’t bother with small residential work because people want top quality work at cowboy prices

ohthatbloodycat · 25/07/2021 17:53

@cervixuser

That's more in line with what o was thinking! I have been told it's a 2 day job. And inclusive of paint. I think I have been unrealistic! I'm out of touch really.

£250

NW

speakout · 25/07/2021 17:53

Sounds a little steep- depends on your area though.
I would expect to pay around £250 for a job like that.

BeaBeaBuzz · 25/07/2021 17:54

I’d have expected about £500 for that (not in London)

ohthatbloodycat · 25/07/2021 17:54

That's what I thought, but as I said, I'm completely out of the loop.

OP posts:
Janaih · 25/07/2021 17:54

Seems slightly on the cheap side to me. I would be happy to pay that. (South coast). I would say 600 max.

BeaBeaBuzz · 25/07/2021 17:55

Also don’t ‘touch up’ woodwork, it’s always obvious. If you’re having someone do it just get them to do it properly

Conchitastrawberry · 25/07/2021 17:57

Yes I’d go with £500 too plus materials. You can’t just touch up paintwork it’ll need rubbing down and undercoating properly. That’s at least a couple of days work. Our bedroom, similar size and took more than two days to do it properly. I’d check what he’s doing so you can compare quotes properly. Some will do it properly, others will do it cheap.

Herecomesthesun70 · 25/07/2021 18:05

I paid £400 for my halls stairs landing a huge lounge. Ceilings and walls

RaraRachael · 25/07/2021 18:07

My decorator who is excellent would charge around £350 for that, including materials. I'm possible in a cheaper area. There are cheaper people here but in my experience, you get what you pay for.

HelloDulling · 25/07/2021 18:08

@Herecomesthesun70 How long did that take?

drpet49 · 25/07/2021 18:13

My neighbour is a decorator and he said he would charge £250 for that.

5zeds · 25/07/2021 18:16

Sounds right to me (SW)
