How much would you expect to pay to have this done?

For a painter and decorator to paint a bedroom in your house (an older property, so not totally straightforward new-build walls!). The room measures 17'8" x 11'3".
It would be a paint refresh on the ceiling, a little bit of touching up of some of the woodwork, and the walls to be painted (one colour above the picture rail, and another colour underneath).
It's the first time I've had any paintwork done in my place, and so wasn't sure what to expect.
First painter and decorator has just come by and quoted £450, inclusive of everything. I am expecting two more quotes later.
This struck me as steep but I have nothing to compare it to as yet!
@Herecomesthesun70 How long did that take?
A lot 2 or 3 days if I remember rightly.
In S Wales so probably cheaper here

Leah2005 · 25/07/2021 18:34

It depends if you are paying a qualified painter and decorator or a competent home decorator. I would have thought £450 was about right for the former.

knittingaddict · 25/07/2021 18:37

That's more in line with what o was thinking!
I have been told it's a 2 day job. And inclusive of paint.
I think I have been unrealistic! I'm out of touch really.

But 3 x £150 = £450.

knittingaddict · 25/07/2021 18:37

Should have said, it sounds right to me too.

Treacletoots · 25/07/2021 18:43

I think it's a little on the cheaper side actually. DH does occasionally take on jobs from friends and he's been paid that for a similar job with no wood work, which would really bump up the cost.

bebarkered · 25/07/2021 18:52

£300 here OP (in the North West) x

Crunchymum · 25/07/2021 18:56

@drpet49

My neighbour is a decorator and he said he would charge £250 for that.
You asked your neighbour? Shock
BumbleMug · 25/07/2021 18:59

My decorators day rate is £130 per man (NW).
Your job sounds like a 2-3 day job plus materials.
So seems about right to me.

swampytiggaa · 25/07/2021 19:02

My son is an apprentice painter and decorator with 2 years college and about 2 months on the job experience and he has done a couple of jobs for friends. He charges £10 an hour and they supply the materials. So an actual skilled painter would charge a lot more than that.

ohthatbloodycat · 25/07/2021 19:03

It's a 2 day job for one person. Have now had that confirmed by two painters!

Sounds slightly on the high side but not by much. Just paid my decorator £350 for a two day job. He supplied white paint and I supplied the colour paint so all-in it’s cost me £420. This is a slightly more expensive day rate than I’ve paid before but he came recommended and has a good reputation (last decorator didn’t do a good job). He’s done a lovely job too.
