Bouncy castle in the street

daphnedoo12 · 24/07/2021 11:30

Hi,

I live in a street that is blocked off half way by bollards, it has a widening to allow cars to turn around. We do not have front gardens, it's terraced housing.

We park our cars directly outside of our house.

Neighbour (many, many issues with this neighbour) has now set up a huge bouncy castle in the middle of the road.

I can just about turn my car around to get out of the street, although with great difficulty and also with the risk of hitting a child as there is now about 15 of them in the middle of the road.

Anyone parked further up would struggle to actually get their car out.

Is this even legal? We have decent sized yards?? I don't understand why it needs to be in the middle of an actual road. It's so dangerous!

I sound like a party pooper, I have a DS and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing this, no adults are constantly with the children, they're in/out their houses and it's just so worrying.

Am I just a party pooper or am I right to be concerned about this?

Neighbour 4 doors up has kicked off threatening to ring the police. Neighbours who have the bouncy castle just shouted obscenities at him.

Hope your other neighbour was able to get to work OP.

Why are there so many entitled neighbours recently. I thought mine were bad, always parking over my driveway.

@SusannahMartin

Oh god, Covid has been so hard on so many kids. Could you not just turn a blind eye? You know the way there is a Mumsnet classics? Is there a Mumsnet party poopers?
So you think it is sensible to encourage children to play on the road, @SusannahMartin? And you’d be just fine if you couldn’t get to work because some neighbours had blocked the street with a bouncy castle?
Ellmau · 24/07/2021 15:15

Is there an update as to the police?

EmeraldShamrock · 24/07/2021 15:18

I'd say the police will move it, they're not insured if a child breaks a bone etc.

WutheringTights · 24/07/2021 15:19
@VariantL1130 - I was just thinking that. Absolutely zilch happens in my boring street in boring suburbia. Shame as I’ve been working at home since March 2020 and trust me nothing has happened. Maybe I should be glad
I live in a naice area and we've had a bouncy castle in our street. In my defence, it was a street party that everyone was invited to, everyone had agreed to it, we left space for car/emergency vehicle access, it was appropriately weighted down and surrounded by crashmats and the children were properly supervised (eg big kids not allowed on with little ones etc). So they can work.

TurquoiseDragon · 24/07/2021 15:21

@justasking111

The OP talks about big yards so am thinking USA .
I'm in the Midlands. We use the term yard here, especially in relation to terraced housing. I have a back yard, it's a small area that could be a garden except it's paved over. It's big enough for a bouncy castle, though.

......
They didn't have to party in the road! House and back garden would have sufficed for most people, the kids would have enjoyed it just as much and not inconvenienced neighbours.

Maggiesfarm · 24/07/2021 15:38
@Maggiesfarm our neighbours across the road from us have had two parties for their kids in their front garden, both with bouncy castles, in the past few weeks. The reason they have it in the front is because their back garden is a tiny triangles as they are on a corner plot.
Flipping heck! Anyone would think having a bouncy castle is mandatory. However it wasn't on the road, that's something.

StripyGiraffes · 24/07/2021 15:43

That sounds bonkers and dangerous for the kids, aside from the legalities. I am amazed that whoever they hired the bouncy castle from agreed to set it up there as it will likely invalidate their insurance. Not to mention that they aren't meant to be set up on paved surfaces anyway or they will likely be damaged.

BluebellsGreenbells · 24/07/2021 15:49

I’m also surprised the bouncy castle people erected it in the street. Can you see who the company is OP?

endofthelinefinally · 24/07/2021 15:49

I very much doubt this is a bona fide company with insurance.

AddressLabel · 24/07/2021 15:53

Are these yoir neighbours? 🤣

mummyof2ds · 24/07/2021 15:56

It's illegal to put a bouncing on a street there insurance won't coving been on the street either because it council property they have to have permission off the council and the bouncing castle company's insurance needs to be hire then the councils witch it never is. I am surprised they have put it there because off the ancoure point need to be secure enough for all the pegs to go in if you are worried find out the castle company and complain. Only no all this is because I have my own castle company hope this helps

Grenlei · 24/07/2021 15:57

Add a small driveway to the front of the house and that's basically my neighbours - although their pool was rectangular (and bigger!)

Classy!

@AddressLabel

As if seeing a picture of Matt Hancock playing tonsil hockey wasn't bad enough!!!

daphnedoo12 · 24/07/2021 16:06

Hi, sorry for the delayed reply. Sickly DS to look after... they've now got club music blasting.

Police have been rang by my DH and neighbour down the road, both said they'd sent a patrol out.. that was within an hour of me posting the thread. No sign of them? Sad

Another day in paradise Envy

Also I'm not American haha, northern and we say yard. Yard is definitely big enough to accommodate a bouncy castle, they just choose to use the street. We also live opposite a giant park, so it's not like outside space is lacking for the kids to play out during summer.

Every day I am more astounded by how utterly unreasonable some people are!

KnightandDay · 24/07/2021 16:17

Your neighbours OP, not you!

noirchatsdeux · 24/07/2021 16:37

I used to live in a cul-de-sac (never again) and one of the families from the next street along used to do the same thing every summer! The first year it happened, I couldn't get over the cheek of it, they didn't even live in the cul-de-sac but thought it was fine to block it off for the whole day for everyone that did! They used to run an extension cord around to power a DJ booth all bloody day as well...

One memorable year a Hermes driver nearly got into a fist fight with the father of the family because he drove onto the cul-de-sac anyway to make a delivery... I moved away before the next occasion, can't say I was sorry to!

LizB62A · 24/07/2021 16:50

Report to your local council too

Doingtheboxerbeat · 24/07/2021 16:50

@AddressLabel I was picturing a street just like this Grin.
And for those with nice sensible neighbours, please spare a thought when posting advice that many of us don't have the luxury of reasonable responses which is why many people put up with shit.

OP, anyone with own a spicy, scratchy cat?
