Not to carry my phone to town?

I take it to work for obvious reasons, but in my own spare time - i leave it home. If somebody needs to talk to me, i will call them later.

Ok ??

Good for you??

DysmalRadius · 23/07/2021 22:35

It depends who has said you're unreasonable? The other parent of your children who had no way to get in touch with you after 5 hours awol or your busybody friend who sent you a million increasingly outraged texts because you didn't respond to the first in 10 seconds flat?

Nuggetnugget · 23/07/2021 22:35

I am the same lately. I feel like I need a break from phones. I do need mumsnet etc for company at times Grin
But I take a decent break from the phone and often go out without it.
It's healthy to.

XenoBitch · 23/07/2021 22:36

Same. I have a phone for my convenience, not other people's.

Onairjunkie · 23/07/2021 22:37

Ok….

I like to have mine with me though, as I have ill family members and a child, lots of animals and a busy farm, and sometimes I’m working away in the city and clients need to contact me.

Neither of us are superior to the other. Just, different.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 23/07/2021 22:37

Meh. It’s up to you.

It’d annoy me if my husband did it and I needed him, but he’s more than capable of putting it on do not disturb and checking it every now and again incase something has happened (and I’m pregnant, which might be framing my view!)

CatsArePeople · 23/07/2021 22:38

Actually my own mother Grin She lives in another country. She herself is surgically attached to her phone you'd think she's a teenager.

What if they need to contact you desperately, accident etc.
QueenBee52 · 23/07/2021 22:38

Fair enough 🎉

And it’s pretty inconvenient if it’s at home when you need it…just put it in do not disturb.

‘Surgically attached’ is a bit judgemental. And it’s not just teenagers who find phones invaluable for a whole range of activities. You sound pretty out of touch with that comment.
Precipice · 23/07/2021 22:41

As a general rule, not unreasonable.

I do the same in day-to-day business, except where I'm awaiting a call or if I'm away from the place where I live (e.g. trip to another city).

However, in some circumstances, you could be being unreasonable, if there was a previously recognised need for someone to contact you specifically during that day. The problem there would be less that you were not easily contactable, as that not being contactable might lead to you not fulfilling agreed upon obligations (or, alternatively, wasting your time not knowing something was no longer necessary, but then the detriment would be on you, so you can choose to risk it).

Neondisco · 23/07/2021 22:42

You sound judgemental of people's phone use. Honestly just do what you want.

fraddu · 23/07/2021 22:46

One of my relatives doesn't believe in the "mobile" element of a phone so it never leaves the house. When she first got it she would turn it on to make a call & then when finished to turn it off again. You could never return a missed call! 😆

Micemakingclothes · 23/07/2021 22:47

If you have anyone who is dependent upon you, I think you should carry your phone.

I also think it’s a bit insane not to carry a phone these days given the lack of accessible phones in the event of something that doesn’t quite rise to the level of true emergency or just getting stuck on the side of a rural road.

If I don’t want to talk to people, I just put my phone in quiet mode, but then I still have it if I need to reach out.

Hankunamatata · 23/07/2021 22:47

And 🤷‍♀️

CatsArePeople · 23/07/2021 22:48

not really, just my mum's. because she's ridiculous with it.

I am of an age where this would not have been possible for a long time.

DisgruntledPelican · 23/07/2021 22:48

It seems odd to me to just think of a phone for phone calls, I guess. I’d want to have my phone with me when going into town to:

  • check train times
  • listen to a podcast
  • look at maps to find out where a shop or cafe was
  • pay for things I bought
  • look at social media when waiting for the train home

Someone phoning me or me phoning them would be a rarity!

Marmalady75 · 23/07/2021 22:50

@fraddu my fil is exactly the same. He keeps it in a drawer so it doesn’t get lost 😂

fraddu · 23/07/2021 22:52

Yep it lived in a drawer for years! 🤣

CatsArePeople · 23/07/2021 22:56

I'm not stupid. I do take my phone if it involves travel or i know that i need my family to reach me, or its late and i may need a taxi. But daytime shopping trips, swimming pool, gym, coffee with a friend - phone stays home and family knows i'll be back by dinner time.

I have a phone for my convenience but I don't leave it at home very often because I need it for so many things. If I'm out and I don't want to take a call then I just ignore it or reject it.

If I'm nipping into town to collect something or to Tssco to grab some bread and milk it's not the end of the world if I don't take my phone with me but generally I always have it with me so that I can be in contact with DD/in case of emergency/so I can pay if there's an issue with my card/to keep track of my to do list/to have access to any info I need etc etc all of which is stored on my phone.

daisyjgrey · 23/07/2021 22:59

Would you like some kind of badge? A sticker of some sort?

Xmasbaby11 · 23/07/2021 23:03

I'd always take my phone. I might turn it off eg at gym, but I can't see how it would benefit me leaving it at home. I might not need it but it's useful in so many ways, not just others contacting me.
