To ask vegetarians to give ideas…

I’m doing a full roast beef dinner on Sunday but one of my guests is vegetarian. I was thinking of preparing a quorn fillet with vegetarian gravy but then wondered if this was a bit boring?

If you have any ideas of the meat free part of a roast dinner I would be grateful!

I’m vegetarian and would be perfectly happy with that, I never want people to go to any more trouble than necessary. Just make sure you don’t cook your roasts in duck fat or anything! Most gravy granules are veggie, btw - including red bisto.

I like the quorn roast, it’s big but can take a doggy bag home and make sandwiches later 😋. It’s nicer to have that carved than the fillets, as it absorbs the gravy.

You can get veggie pigs in blankets from Tesco if you fancy adding something extra.

Treaclepie19 · 23/07/2021 21:45

I'd also be happy with that but the sainsburys sweet potato nut roast is delicious!

PurpleDaisies · 23/07/2021 21:49

Some people react badly to quorn. I’d check first. I’d go for veggie sausage instead. Sainsbury’s shroom dogs are great on a roast.

Often veggies get given a pie, which I’d always enjoy, but for me a more meaty alternative (sausages basically!) is better with the rest of the roast dinner.

Veggie haggis - great with roast potatoes and veggies. M@s do a reasonable vegan gravy (in a pouch, on the shelves) and I do love it with mint sauce.

whateveryousay · 23/07/2021 21:50

I’d also prefer vegan sausages, or a vegan pie, to quorn.

whateveryousay · 23/07/2021 21:52

And Marigold Gravy Granules are vegan. My kids, who are meat eaters, really like it too.

KittenKong · 23/07/2021 21:53

I find vegan alternatives make me feel a bit sickly - I think there is something used as an alternative to dairy that doesn’t agree) and it leaves a coating/weird taste in my mouth.

I’d eat most things in pastry or a quiche.

PurpleDaisies · 23/07/2021 21:54

Red bisto is vegan

Reallybadidea · 23/07/2021 21:56

Personally I really like a nut roast and a quorn fillet would make me feel a bit sad.

KittenKong · 23/07/2021 21:57

I think that some of the bistro flavours in jars that isn’t veggie though?

KittenKong · 23/07/2021 21:57

(Appalling English Blush)

Hoppinggreen · 23/07/2021 21:58

Some people don’t react well to Quorn
My DD is vegetarian and we use very few meat substitutes, we just use vegetables instead

Sexnotgender · 23/07/2021 21:58

Quorn fillets are horrible.

Personally I’d prefer cauliflower cheese or something plus the usual roast sides.

kerosene20 · 23/07/2021 22:00

Red bisto is vegan 👍🏻 We love Richmond meat free sausages with our roast, they’re gorgeous!

rjacksmiss · 23/07/2021 22:00

The Quorn roast, finely sliced with a nice gravy is perfect. It's so good! My DC who are meat eaters ask for this a lot.

Halfwaytoholiday · 23/07/2021 22:01

I love quorn but for me it's an everyday food, so I would prefer a pie/nut roast type thing for a roast. There's also the risk of bad reactions which I believe some people have.
Sausages sound good - there are Glamorgan veggie ones which are my favourite but it's not me who'll eat them

OatyBarKid · 23/07/2021 22:05

If having a roast I usually make myself a mushroom, spinach and stilton pastry thing with a blue cheese sauce.

I don't normally eat Quorn but would be happy with it at someone else's or a bought veggie pie. There are some very good substitutes these days. If you cook your veg in fat remember to keep it separate to the veggie's veggies please.

DahliaMacNamara · 23/07/2021 22:07

Why don't you ask your guest what they'd like? I'm veggie and I'd honestly rather have plain vegetables than have to force down a quorn fillet or other meat substitute to be polite. Others, clearly, feel differently.
As a pp suggests, a simple cauliflower cheese would go well with a roast dinner without making too much extra work.

AnnaBellaCruella · 23/07/2021 22:08

Some great ideas here thank you!

These are absolutely lush if you have an Aldi near you? groceries.aldi.co.uk/en-GB/p-i-am-veggie-2-spinach-leek-cheddar-lattices-300g/4088600191225

I like a Linda McCartney pie too

Quorn is OK but a bit tasteless unless cooked in a sauce.

cungryhow · 23/07/2021 22:10

Cauliflower cheese is my standard meat substitute in a roast. If it’s Christmas/Boxing Day/Easter etc maybe some veggie thing in pastry.

FudgeFlake · 23/07/2021 22:16

Linda MacCartney mozzarella burgers are our perfect replacement for the vegetarian child if everyone else is on roast beef. They're very yum and other child and I now go for them anyway if it's a midweek burger thing. We won't stop doing roast Sunday lunches. DP and I are both nicely brought up pastoral farming family children and regularly get sent freezer packs from the cousinry who are still getting up at sparrowfart etc to look after the animals on the farms.

TrufflyPig · 23/07/2021 22:20

Linda McCartney country pie is my fav veggie addition to a roast dinner but I would ask your guest what they would prefer.

robotcollision · 23/07/2021 22:24

When we have a roast, DS1 who is veggie loves the Waitrose vegan Wellington It serves 2-3 generously. His eyes light up when I serve it, especially if I make veggie gravy jazzed up with red wine, garlic and fresh herbs.

Honeyroar · 23/07/2021 22:24

Another vote for those Aldi lattice slices. Their veggie pies are fabulous too. I also like most nut roasts. I’m not a great fan of queen. To be honest I just like a good plate of veg with roasted potatoes (done in oil) and red Bisto gravy.
