To ask vegetarians to give ideas…

I’m doing a full roast beef dinner on Sunday but one of my guests is vegetarian. I was thinking of preparing a quorn fillet with vegetarian gravy but then wondered if this was a bit boring?

If you have any ideas of the meat free part of a roast dinner I would be grateful!

Quorn roast with veggie gravy

PaolaDiLorenzo · 23/07/2021 22:36

Stuffed peppers are really nice or a veggie version of a meat loaf made with lentils.

StillWeRise · 23/07/2021 22:43

I would rather have just the veg (assuming they were in fact vegetarian) than have quorn. Pies are nice - or can be- but I don't really want pastry in the same meal as roast potatoes. I'd be happy with a ready made nut roast if it was reasonable quality.

DrNo007 · 23/07/2021 22:43

Do ensure the guest doesn’t react badly to quorn as it can have horrible effects on some. Personally as a very long term veggie the one thing I cannot bear is meat substitutes and weird synthetic foods—like quorn and veggie mince made from textured vegetable protein. I would buy your guest a veggie nut roast—easy and delicious.

Dita73 · 23/07/2021 22:46

I’ve always been veggie and when I make roasts I just don’t have the meat. A great big plate of veg is my idea of bliss. A cauli cheese always goes down well but things like nut roasts, etc are just completely superfluous

LittleCatDog · 23/07/2021 22:49

The Linda McCartney pies are really nice with a roast!

littledrummergirl · 23/07/2021 22:52

I like a really simple concoction of asparagus and spinach in a thick cheese sauce placed on the centre of squares of puff pastry and baked.

Thenthatsthatthen · 23/07/2021 22:52

I usually have cauliflower cheese or a country veg or cheese and leek type pie (recently just the filling as dieting). I hate nut roasts but I think I'm on the minority. To be honest I'm happy with just the potato's and trimmings (as pp have said make sure nothing cooked in animal fat) but appreciate people like to have a 'main/protein' part of the meal.

Futureself · 23/07/2021 22:52

I just like to be have the same as everyone else, just without the meat please. What time should I get there Smile

cricketmum84 · 23/07/2021 22:54

Just give me a big bowl of cauli cheese and a spoon. Sod the quorn!

JustCallMeBubblesDahling · 23/07/2021 22:54

I generally have Linda McCartney red onion and rosemary sausages with Bisto Best onion gravy with a roast which I also serve over the meat for DH and the DC. Really tasty. I love lots of roast potatoes so don’t like pies or pastry products with it.

Cannot eat Quorn since I very embarrassingly spontaneously regurgitated it as soon as I finished a curry with it in a few years back. It was literally just the Quorn pieces that came back up! Took it as a sign that my stomach, which normally has a very strong constitution, would not tolerate it any more Grin.

I stick to soy, lentil, bean or pea meat substitutes now.

Egghead68 · 23/07/2021 22:57

Some vegetarians (including me) really don’t like eating meat substitutes (like quorn). Just do some cauliflower cheese that you can all have as a side-dish.

Whatshouldbemyusername · 23/07/2021 23:00

Hey OP. You could even do a cauliflower "steak". It's easy as well. Loads of recipes for it on Pinterest and YouTube. Serve with some gravy and salad and done

BillyRaywasapreachersson · 23/07/2021 23:00

I would also prefer nothing in place of the meat. I do have (as does pretty much everyone) very specific rules around roast dinners, but these do not apply to bread sauce, Yorkshire puddings and stuffing which can all be served with gay abandon on any Sunday lunch. So those, good roast potatoes, green beans, carrots cut in batons or baby ones, (rounds taste vile), maybe a few peas. Gravy.

CherryPieface · 23/07/2021 23:00

I wouldn’t expect much from a meat eating cook, so I’d just be happy you made me something that I could eat! But I’d want more than one quorn fillet!! They are tiny.

ThinWomansBrain · 23/07/2021 23:02

cauliflower steak
you just slice the cauliflower really thickly - 3-4cm, brush it with oil, and I like paprika and garlic, and bake it. A while since I've done it, but I'm sure there's lots of recipes online to check the timings.
seeds on it are good for extra crunch

Doyouavocado · 23/07/2021 23:07

The Aldi red on lion and goatscheese parcels on the freezer section are lovely, they also do another flavour which is equally as nice!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/07/2021 23:10

You're probably best asking your guest, not Mumsnet.

There's as many people who will want quorn, nut roast, vegan sausages, cauliflower steak, roast squash or vegetable tart as those who will hate those options.

thumpingrug · 23/07/2021 23:15

Id take the quorn. It might be every day, but the fact that someone has gone to the trouble to source it and cook it for me would make me feel special.

FoxgloveSummers · 23/07/2021 23:17

There’s a brilliant BBC recipe for Butternut Dauphinoise which was easy peasy and also works as a side dish for your meat eaters

Kanaloa · 23/07/2021 23:17

Honestly the fact that you’re making a proper dish will be appreciated enough. I’ve lost count of the amount of dinners I’ve gone to where people have forgotten I’m vegetarian/suggested I eat just sides/asked me to bring my own food. I am fine to bring my own, but always appreciate friends who go the extra mile and make me a proper dinner if they’ve invited me.

Hodan85 · 23/07/2021 23:19

I'd be happy with that, Linda McCartney mince beef style pies are very nice with a roast too!

FictionalCharacter · 23/07/2021 23:20

I love the Quorn roast - it's better than the fillets. Nut roast would be great too.

1stTimeMama · 23/07/2021 23:20

I'd prefer a mini pie or quiche than the quorn options myself. The Higgidy ones are nice. I'd be a right pain now to have as a guest, veggie and gluten free!

MsJuniper · 24/07/2021 08:04

We have nut cutlets with our roast which are easy to cook and tasty.
