To ask you to help me remember…(if you lived in Cambridge in the 90’s)

HELP!!!!

I’ve been Googling for hours with no luck and it’s slowly driving me round the bend!!

In the mid/late 90’s I used to go to a club/music venue with my mates, we’d watch local bands play. It was around Napier street/Cobblers yard and it was possibly the strip club - Talk of the town at some point before then.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

@BelindaBumcrack

I can't help sorry, but I worked in Cambridge a lot during the 2000s. We used to go to a fabulous little restaurant that served all sorts of fabulous meals - Italian, Greek, Turkish etc. I've googled it but nothing that comes up looks familiar. It was in the centre of Cambridge, not that far from King's if I remember correctly. I suspect that it is long since closed but I would love to be reminded of what it was called. And if it is still open I want to go back there....
That was the Eraina Tavern!! Amazing place, sadly last time we went I think it had closed down.

I can confirm that nothing has gone into the Don Pasquale building yet and frankly with the commercial rents as high as they are in Cambridge, I doubt it’ll be filled any time soon (Costa will probably get in there though…)

Fagito’s on Mill Road (FatGits Grin) is still going with their own chilli sauce and baklava, and last time I was in Cambridge at night, The Trailer of Life was there but that was quite some time ago.

Formaldeheidi · 25/07/2021 19:34

Adding to the list:
Starbucks on the market square that had sofas and armchairs (my first experience of an American coffee shop)
The Rainbow Cafe on Kings Parade
The Greek restaurant on Regent Street called Varsity. It’s still called Varsity but not as it once was unfortunately.

Ahhh so many memories. I grew up in Cambridge - went to Parkside school.
Still love Cambridge and miss it lots.
I'm wondering if I know some of you if you went to school there? Also went to CRC and APU.

AlexaShutUp · 25/07/2021 19:48

So many lovely memories here! I used to love Clown's. Ate many meals at Eraina's. And Steps was another favourite.

Does anyone remember Nadia's, the bakery on Trinity Street. Their chocolate fudge cake was to die for.

And King's Pantry, the veggie restaurant on King's Parade.

Formaldeheidi · 25/07/2021 21:30

I remember Nadias! I remember being sent there to buy breakfast for my first ever boss Hmm I also remember wonderful rocky road!

Member815316 · 25/07/2021 21:49

What about Disco Kenny! Anyone remember him?

If you mean The Whim in Trinity Street, it's sadly closed.
MadeinBelfast · 25/07/2021 22:59

Nadia's did amazing rum truffles! I went to lots of the places that have now closed. Dojos was great. I also remember going to the Picture House Cinema - wasn't it somewhere else before it moved to near Weatherspoons? Near Borders maybe?

He’s still going. He’s often spotted out and about in his hat having a swift half.

Worlds gone mad mate.

Member815316 · 25/07/2021 23:10

Can't believe he's still about - 'fair's in town'. Love this thread - made me feel very nostalgic...and old

IchHabeSiebenFlowers · 25/07/2021 23:10

Oh, you are all my people.

Just adding Sticky Fingers, loved that place, plus the kebab shop down the little side street that led to the pub by Parker's Piece. Spent a lot of time in that pub but can't for the life of me remember what it was called. The Hogshead maybe?

Borders Bookshop and proper Heffers, none of this Blackwells Oxford crap.

mineofuselessinformation · 25/07/2021 23:14

@GinasGirl, depending on when you were there I might have taught you!
And I'm sure you must remember Miss T, who finally retired from teaching only recently. Smile

CMSdividend · 25/07/2021 23:22

@Member815316 Read the whole thread and was thinking how come no one had mentioned him! There's a Facebook appreciation page for him. I used to work at Cambridge Red on Sturton street and he always came in for a half. Do worry about him though, never spoke about family.... just wanting to meet a nice girl with a bike.

MadeinBelfast · 25/07/2021 23:22

I think it was the Hogs Head, then maybe The Avery later?

There was a little Vietnamese place opposite Sticky Fingers for a while called Pho, it was lovely.

farnworth · 25/07/2021 23:24

@allponygirlcurtis

I too had many “birthdays” when at erainas! Might have also sung happy birthday to you when in there!
You could certainly fill up there. lasagna served with chips, rice AND garlic bread……. (My stomach clenches at the memory)

allycat4 · 25/07/2021 23:44

There was a lovely Polish cafe on kings Street that opened in the 90s. Anyone remember it? What was it called? I think it was beside the newsagent.

Member815316 · 25/07/2021 23:48

@CMSdividend I'd go months without seeing him and always felt relieved when he popped up again.

Borgonzola · 25/07/2021 23:52

Got to be Man in the Moon, right?

Yes! It did amazing sandwiches with some very unusual combinations. The name escapes me now but it’ll come back…
Borgonzola · 25/07/2021 23:54

Oh you already found it, sorry, got excited before I rtft Grin

I think I'm about 10 years behind you, but I also loved Cult Smile baggy trousers and inappropriate tops Grin

ElliePascoe · 26/07/2021 00:03

My people! I've just spent a nostalgic 10 minutes reading through this thread and remembering many drunken nights in Route 66 (which was painted black inside IIRC), the Fez Club and Kambar Grin.

@allycat4 I think the Polish cafe was called Cazimirs? I remember that it did amazing panini, which seemed very sophisticated at the time!

irresistibleoverwhelm · 26/07/2021 00:06

Yes Cazimirs! I think my favourite was some kind of chicken, cheese and mustard combination that was lush 😃

ElliePascoe · 26/07/2021 00:06

I spent much of my student grant on eccentric combinations of clothes from the second hand stalls in the Guildhall (where I also got all the posters to decorate my room), but wished I could afford to buy things in Cult Clothing and Dogfish/Catfish (on Green Street) like the cool kids. I did splurge on an amazing sequined ball dress from the Monsoon sale shop in Rose Crescent, though Grin

ElliePascoe · 26/07/2021 00:09

Oh, and I've just remembered that Heffers used to be an EMPIRE in those days, with about 6 branches around town (the main shop, the paperback and videos (!) shop, the stationery one at the bottom of Sidney St where you could send faxes for a small payment, the Grafton Centre branch, the children's bookshop and the antiquarian bookshop - have I forgotten any?)
