HELP!!!!

I’ve been Googling for hours with no luck and it’s slowly driving me round the bend!!

In the mid/late 90’s I used to go to a club/music venue with my mates, we’d watch local bands play. It was around Napier street/Cobblers yard and it was possibly the strip club - Talk of the town at some point before then.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

And go to the little cafe downstairs on the Market Square, Steps? And eat (more) chips.
Oh and Clowns! I loved it there

Oh this thread has made my day.
Grew up in cam, was a teen in the 90s, and we're moving back there from London in a couple of weeks.... was feeling sad after a leaving for but this thread has reminded me how much I love Cambridge, it's going to be good to be back.

TravellingSpoon · 23/07/2021 20:22

I miss Cambridge too.

Spent a lot of time in Willie Thorne's and the Duke of Cambridge. There was a takeaway on East Street that served spicy potatoes and they were the best thing ever.

And I used to walk into town from Hills Road every day and it didnt seem that far, now if I have to walk 500m I feel grumbly.

WhyMeWhyNot21 · 23/07/2021 20:23

@irresistibleoverwhelm

I’m near St Ives now. Still go in to Cambridge quite a bit though as St Ives nightlife is…well, it isn’t. Grin

The multicultural restaurant along from King's sounds like the Little Rose. DH and I had our first proper date there and I ate a great deal of bright pink taramosalata.

I was in Cambridge a few months ago and it's gone Sad

My Ex-H and I had our first date at Don Pasquale.

@DameCelia

The Cellar Bar !!!!! Yes!! Now to solve my other big Cambridge mystery. A Blues that ran over a car workshop in a back street where the Crown now is I've never met anyone who ever went to it but I know there were loads of people there whenever I went. Up a rickety staircase, a couple of quid to get in, another couple for a red stripe, massive sound system, 'smoky' atmosphere.
Not Kambar?
WhyMeWhyNot21 · 23/07/2021 20:27

@inkyscribbler

I love going away, love visiting other cities and exploring but Cambridge has my heart. I walked around the city with DH the other day and noticed so many beautiful buildings that I’d never noticed before. People on punts in the sunshine and all the quirky little shops. Gardenias for a cheeky kebab on the way back. Love it!

No @TravellingSpoon. I don't think it had a name, it definitely wasn't legal, or licensed Grin
My post should have read that it was on a back street where the Crown Court now is.

clouds87 · 23/07/2021 20:32

the rose and crown, on the corner next to the roundabout off to newmarket road?

whatswithtodaytoday · 23/07/2021 20:34

Cambridge is the best place in the world. One day I'll move back.

The rickety staircase and Red Stripe sounds like Kambar? But I don't remember a car workshop.

clouds87 · 23/07/2021 20:34

sorry to hijack the thread, just have to say i lived in purple flares from cult clothing :)

I think the Little Rose became that chain fish restaurant, Loch Fyne. I don't know if it's still Loch Fyne though!

This thread has made me so nostalgic that I’ve spent the last hour planning a trip with my old housemate and DH. Unfortunately, we’ve all ended up at the very opposite end of the country.
I think we’ll be so disappointed in our pub crawl, but we will make sure we do it ( before we turn 50!).

WhyMeWhyNot21 · 23/07/2021 20:35

@clouds87

It’s an estate agents now!
So many of the best pubs have shut. We used to love the Town and Gown on castle hill. It’s called The Punter now…nice but not the same.

God I feel old! My Cambridge was the 80s - Raffles, The Great Northern, The Burleigh arms...

irresistibleoverwhelm · 23/07/2021 20:38

I was a grad student in Cambridge just before so much of it got redeveloped. Live somewhere else v similar now Wink but I miss Cambridge. So much has closed or been rebuilt now. Even the Dojo noodle bar has gone!

Ramekin · 23/07/2021 20:38

I think @BelindaBumcrack's restaurant was the Eraina Taverna on Free School Lane.

Sadly no more, I had some memorable meals in there.

TravellingSpoon · 23/07/2021 20:39

I always feel so embarrassed that although I grew up so close to Cambridge (just inside Essex but Cambridge was my closest big town) I never really explored it. Never really ventured beyond Sixth Form or the Grafton Centre, never into the colleges or by the river. Although I did go to quite a few Strawberry Fairs!

parrotonmyshoulder · 23/07/2021 20:40

But now I’m feeling depressed that Dojo and Erainas have gone!

clouds87 · 23/07/2021 20:40

Yes it is...I have never moved further then 20 mins from Cambridge!

Does anyone remember going to The Junction? The 5 bands for a fiver night or something I think it was? I'm now 33 - love thinking back to my teens :)

irresistibleoverwhelm · 23/07/2021 20:40

I had some memorable food poisoning from the Eraina, I can say that :D
marmitesandwiches · 23/07/2021 20:44

Erainas? (Eraina taverna)?? No idea if it’s still there!

WhyMeWhyNot21 · 23/07/2021 20:44

Anyone remember Snowy? On his bike with all the animals? There’s a statue dedicated to him on the market square. I had the Buttercup Buskers book when I was little. I used to go past his house in Oakington when I was little and his whole front garden was covered in stuff toys/animals etc. Lovely fella he was!

irresistibleoverwhelm · 23/07/2021 20:58

Oh I remember him standing outside the Guildhall with the mice on his hat!
