How to clean whilst child has athlete’s foot (not from contact)

Popcorn100 · 23/07/2021 11:51

Hi all,

My daughter had a plaster on her toe and in this hot weather, it has caused a little bit of athlete’s foot (confirmed by chiropodist). We are putting Canestan 1% on three times a day - hopefully that will clear it.

Just want to ask best cleaning routine as am pregnant and don’t want to catch it. Do I need to clean carpets, bleach floors every night including bath tub. Do you wash bedding every night?? I have sprayed shoes and am ensuring that she alternates shoes every day.

Thanks - hate the thought of the fungal infection in the house and that it can’t be seen!

Thanks all!!

I might be being over relaxed but I thought the yeast that causes athletes foot was literally everywhere and you just got over growths of it when one had a fungal infection - so you won't catch it as it's just all around anyway?

Someone else might correct me if I'm wrong.

Batfurger · 23/07/2021 11:56

It's not Ebola.

CoronaPeroni · 23/07/2021 12:00

This would never have crossed my mind and never will even if I live for another 1,000 years.

ILoveCrap · 23/07/2021 12:01

DS gets athletes foot occasionally, I have never taken precautions against catching it (usual cleaning/hygiene aside) and have never had it myself.

Lagomtransplant · 23/07/2021 12:01

As an adult, you almost certainly already have it as a carrier. Yeast, a form of candida albicans, lives in skin and mucosa 99% of the time and does nothing bad, in fact, can help keep some bacteria at bay. Only in certain conditions (hot, humid areas with pH elevation, like under a plaster) does it start to propagate. It will not harm you, while carpet cleaning and bleach in this temperature while heavily pregnant almost certainly will.

Do you normally suffer from health anxieties?

User5827372728 · 23/07/2021 12:02

I’ve had athletes foot for 6 months and CANNOT get rid of it! No one in my family has caught it and we just doing our usual cleaning routine.

Lbnc2021 · 23/07/2021 12:03

I’ve got athletes foot and I can honestly say I’ve never been this dramatic over it Confused I just dry my feet, put something on it and wear clean dry socks every day

Lagomtransplant · 23/07/2021 12:04

@User5827372728 have you tested your blood sugar levels? They are usually behind persistent propagation phase.

Popcorn100 · 23/07/2021 12:04

Have heard it is extremely contagious and people get it again and again as the fungi is never killed in the house so re-infects.

Don’t think you can use anything effective on adults when pregnant so have heard lots of pregnant ladies putting up with it until baby is born. Just want to be careful not to get it and for daughter not to be reinfected with it once cleared.

OP posts:
Lagomtransplant · 23/07/2021 12:07

I'll repeat, it's not contagious as it lives in human skin of majority of people. It's part and parcel of everyday life, unless you are diabetic or under heavy immunosuppression (like cancer therapy, HIV or transplants). Chill, woman!

Forgottenyeti · 23/07/2021 12:13

You need to stop googling it. Make sure she washes her feet and dries them well, bung the cream on. That's it.

Popcorn100 · 23/07/2021 12:16

The chiropodist said it is highly contagious and can easily be spread to other parts of the body (hence wasn’t sure if should wash bedding every day), and also easily picked up by others by just walking on the carpet where my daughter might have walked barefoot. Was told not to put socks on her at all. (Just reread: I would clean carpets once infection has cleared - not every day 🙈.)

Lagomtransplant · 23/07/2021 12:30

I repeat, you already have it, just in non-propagating stage. I was taught about it when my DH had chemo - you really don't have anything to worry about with an intact immune system.

Your chiropodist needs their qualifications checked.

Have you tried daktarin spray,it's the only thing that gets rid of it for me

Op I get athletes foot occasionally and dh/ds have never had it

Ostryga · 23/07/2021 12:38

Op please listen to @Lagomtransplant not your clearly quack chiropodist who hasn’t the foggiest what they’re on about. And you should stop going to them! They’re far more infectious than athletes foot spouting this nonsense.

Briarshollow · 23/07/2021 12:48

OP, this is a very anxious and illogical post. That you even took her to see a chiropodist about this suggests a concerning level of worry.

The chiropodist is talking nonsense. You won’t catch athletes foot from your daughter. And even if you did, nothing would happen. It won’t harm you. And it certainly won’t harm your baby.

Please don’t waste your time bleaching floors and washing sheets. This will only feed this anxiety.

The health anxiety is the problem, and based on your other posts, it extends to yourself and your children. Please do something as it can be crippling.

poorfanjo · 23/07/2021 12:49
Hmm
Popcorn100 · 23/07/2021 13:12

Thank you for your experiences and advice and has made me feel more relaxed about the issue.

NHS says it is highly contagious too and can spread so confused with some of the conflicting advice.

Was at the chiropodist for something else but would always get an unknown rash checked out anyway so I disagree that would be concerning - would rather get it confirmed so the correct cream can be used.

Thank you for your posts.

Helenluvsrob · 23/07/2021 13:14

Are you ok op? That sounds very OTT for a skin fungus that pretty much everyone gets at some point. It’s not Covid.

Wash your hands regularly and she should wash hands after creaming feet and wear flip flops about the house

Popcorn100 · 23/07/2021 13:14

Also, forgot to ask, those who said they have it but no one else have caught it - do you wear socks or just go barefoot with the cream on?

Thank you!

Hallyup6 · 23/07/2021 13:16

It's athletes foot, not the plague. Doesn't affect you being pregnant in the slightest. I've got a fungal infection in every toenail that spread from athletes foot. It's been there 5 years and I've been pregnant twice. I certainly don't wash my towels and bleach my floor all the time. Nobody else in the family has picked it up. Just treat your child, it'll be gone in a week, and see a professional about your anxiety.

UrAWizHarry · 23/07/2021 13:16

It's just athletes foot.

Stick some cream on it and forget about it.

I'm the same. I've had manky feet for ages and no one else in my house has managed to catch the mankiness.

I think the only things that would help my feet are fire or an exorcist.

Meatshake · 23/07/2021 13:19

Its just athletes foot 😂 calm down!

thepeopleversuswork · 23/07/2021 13:25

I wouldn't bleach my carpets every night to prevent something deadly. Let alone athlete's foot.

Also who has time to bleach carpets?
