How to clean whilst child has athlete’s foot (not from contact)

Hi all,

My daughter had a plaster on her toe and in this hot weather, it has caused a little bit of athlete’s foot (confirmed by chiropodist). We are putting Canestan 1% on three times a day - hopefully that will clear it.

Just want to ask best cleaning routine as am pregnant and don’t want to catch it. Do I need to clean carpets, bleach floors every night including bath tub. Do you wash bedding every night?? I have sprayed shoes and am ensuring that she alternates shoes every day.

Thanks - hate the thought of the fungal infection in the house and that it can’t be seen!

Thanks all!!

DH sometimes gets it. I’ve never had it and we’ve been sharing a bed for more than 30 years. It’s never occurred to me that I might catch it.

You can get a tube of Lamisil Once - from Chemist that will clear it up. As it says, one application and you’re done. Hubby gets it occasionally, but I rarely do. We don’t go overboard on the cleaning in the bathroom which is the only place he has bare feet and I still don’t get it. It’s nothing to be worried about.

If you're that bothered can't she wear flip flops around the house? Her toes won't be covered but also not in contact with the floor.
I do agree with others though that this is a huge overreaction

Nhs says cotton socks are best and not to walk about barefoot

Popcorn100 · 23/07/2021 21:45

Thank you to all the helpful posts.

Thank you but looked into the Lamisil Once and it is for 16 and over.

Yes, she wears flip flops but sometimes forgets.

Will continue with the Canesten and cleaning/drying thoroughly etc. Clean floors often anyway so will throw a bit of bleach in every few days. Will wear socks myself and hope for the best.

Thanks all.

Lagomtransplant is it that blood sugars are high? I have had athlete's foot regularly since childhood really but current phase, coinciding with fungal nail (look away OP), is not shifting. I thought I used Mycil powder when pregnant but maybe not. Never considered it a big deal and I was incredibly anxious! It will be fine OP, nó one ever got it from me.

Hi all.

Just a quick question regarding the above.

I think athlete’s foot has gone but there is still skin that has peeled - is that still athlete’s foot or is that the affect after it has gone? Never had it before so really don’t know.

Thank you!

No idea, I just keep going with the spray until it looks normal again - no red/sore or peeling skin (which I pull off 🤮). No harm in keeping going until sure it's gone.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 01/08/2021 11:25

Yes, I would keep treating until gone.

I’m pregnant and regularly get athlete’s foot because of the shape of my toes (it’s always between my little and fourth toe on my right foot) - use foot cream on the affected area until the skin is healed .. you’re not quite there yet if the skin is split - this is usually what mine presents as

Pompoms1 · 01/08/2021 12:44

Probably just where the skin has thinned from the cream you’ve been using :).

Popcorn100 · 01/08/2021 13:08

I have noticed some ‘dry skin’ slightly peeling - if that is how it presents, has it spread to the other foot?

If I were to put fungal cream on the ‘dry skin’, and it wasn’t actually athlete’s foot, would it damage the skin??

I make a body butter that I've used with success for thrush and athletes foot. It's a great moisturiser and is very soothing after sunburn too. I'm diabetic and never needed to use canestan.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 01/08/2021 14:19

As others have said it’s just athletes foot! I’ve had it for years, it states as a teen when I was waitress and had to wear tights and shoes and have had it on and off since then with working in healthcare and wearing trainers even though I wear clean socks and clean my feet every day. It’s never spread to any other part of my body but it is on other parts of my feet apart from my toes.

No one else in the house has caught it and the worst that happens is the itchiness drives you insane

CanICelebrate · 01/08/2021 14:26

I am prone to athletes foot and had it whist pregnant too. I use daktarin and it clears up but inevitably comes back, regardless of what precautions I take. I have honestly never thought about it as a big deal.

I’d be more inclined to chat to your gp about your anxiety than athletes foot (and I say this as someone who suffered with health anxiety when pregnant).
