DH says I’m ridiculous for wanting to spend this amount of money on a watch, who is BU?

I’ve been lusting after a Rolex datejust for as long as I can remember, but have always stopped myself from buying because there has always been something more ‘sensible’ to do with the money, like keeping it in savings or spending money on an experience like a holiday. This year I’ve been feeling pretty low what with the current situation and there’s no way I’ll be able to go on holiday this year as I’m vulnerable health wise.

Announced to DH this morning that I’m thinking about treating myself to a nice pre owned Rolex (£6k) on the basis that it’s what I’d usually spend on holidays in a year anyway and they hold their value pretty well, in the event that I ever wanted/needed to sell.

DH thinks I’m being absolutely ridiculous spending such a large amount of money on a watch and now I’m wondering whether I’m having a moment of madness. I should point out that the funds would be coming from my own pot of money, rather than joint.

My goodness mumsnet is another planet I had literally no idea a watch could cost so much.

A certain Patek Philippe sold for £24million a few years ago which is quite extreme but it’s certainly very easy to spend £3/4/500k on one.

@Abraxan

That's insane! What a boring thing to spend so much money on, what does it do?! Do people just get them so that other people will see and be impressed by their wealth and taste or something?

Isn't just like most things? Everyone likes spending their money in things they like, it doesn't have to be for the benefit of others. Most people buy things for themselves, not for others.

It's not for me and I don't see the appeal, but dh does. He is really interested in them. He bought his for himself. He isn't interested in what anyone else thinks. Good job really too, as most of our friends also don't get it so wouldn't be impressed, they wouldn't even notice a particular watch type or style in someone else's wrist.

It just seems so much for a thing that sits on your wrist and tells the time, I know everyone is different I just can't get my head around getting excited about a thing that doesn't really do anything much! My weakness is books, but again I'm not really interested in spending huge amounts of money on beautiful first editions and limited edition hardbacks to sit and look pretty on the shelf, I only want to read them! My partner could easily spend thousands on games and consoles if he could, but they are at least entertaining!

If that's what you want then go for it, it's your money

ConsuelaHammock · 23/07/2021 12:54

Buy the watch. Life is too short.

mistermagpie · 23/07/2021 12:57

If you have the money and will love it then why not, it will last longer than a holiday.

I have about 5 grands worth of diamonds on my fingers just because I love them, it's ok to want 'pointless' things as long as you can afford them.

pleasedonttextmyman · 23/07/2021 12:58

There's one comforting thing, you will ALWAYS find people miffed at the idea of spending any money, even if they have it:
house is too big or too show-off
holidays too luxurious
car too fast and expensive
too many kids is wasteful 😂

pleasedonttextmyman · 23/07/2021 12:59

If I could, I would buy this one

just to give some people something to bitch about 😂

ThatsWhatYouThink · 23/07/2021 13:00

DH bought me an expensive watch for a milestone birthday a couple of years ago. I haven't really worn it much (covid) and when I recently got it out found it had stopped. Took it to the jewellers where it was bought for a new battery - £20 standard or £150!! to retain its 'waterproofness' plus that entailed sending the watch away for 2 weeks.
For some reason I found £150 for a battery replacement much more shocking than spending several thousand pounds on a watch (I went for the £20 replacement).

tanstaafl · 23/07/2021 13:00

For that much you should really be trying one on first.

Let’s be honest it’s daft money for something to tell the time , which your phone does already,

I suspect you’ve stopped yourself in the past because you know it’s daft. (For your personal circumstance)

Why would anyone bitch about how you spend your money?
Ginger1982 · 23/07/2021 13:01

You don't have kids - do it!

dreamkitchenhelp · 23/07/2021 13:01

Cartier lover here, I say go for it.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 23/07/2021 13:01

Yes, that would be utterly ridiculous. Think of the things you could buy with 6 grand! Save it and do an amazing holiday next year. No idea why anyone would spend so much on a watch unless they were a multimillionaire, even then its a waste.

scully29 · 23/07/2021 13:03

Blossom toes, WOOOOAH! I think the opposite, I havent let a shelterd life ive just been in a completely different world to this one.

80sMum · 23/07/2021 13:03

YANBU because it's your money and it's up to you what you spend it on. If you can afford it and you want one, then why not?

pleasedonttextmyman · 23/07/2021 13:03

GreyhoundG1rl

are you actually asking that on MN? Grin

ChrissyPlummer · 23/07/2021 13:04

Not unreasonable. I’d love one of the Omega ones featuring Snoopy. Very unlikely I’ll ever get one so I make do with the Timex range featuring him instead!

sadie9 · 23/07/2021 13:05

Go to a jewellers and try on a similar watch. It's the only way you'll 'experience' it in real life rather than in your head.
In your head it's more wishing for comfort, and coveting, it's a kind of daydreaming escapism process.
The reality of having it on your arm everyday brings a totally different feeling.
The mental operation maybe a thought process that you do when you are feeling low.

MoonbeamSprinkles · 23/07/2021 13:05

Absolutely go for it.

And if you do make sure it’s one you LOVE

Don’t buy a not quite as nice one because it probably won’t retain its value as well.

I always thought it was mad spending that much on watches but my bfs husband does this and sometimes he can even sell them for more if they are ones with waiting lists.

The rarer nicer ones retain value better.

You’re better of paying 6k for a Rolex than £1000 for another less desirable brand (if you have the money of course).

ShimmyYay · 23/07/2021 13:05

If it makes you happy go for it , you only live once 😊

G'wan then; you'd spend twenty grand on that tasteless piece of tat?!
HaroldTheHare · 23/07/2021 13:06

These comments are hilarious- there are people saying no way what a waste- save it & spend it all on a fancier holiday next year! 12k on a holiday......which will last a couple of weeks but a watch that will last a lifetime, increase in value & become an heirloom is the waste......I honestly don't get people sometimes!!

itbemay1 · 23/07/2021 13:06

If you want it go for it. I bought myself one 10 years ago, got bored of it and sold it for almost what I had paid for it so they do keep value.

ChequerBoard · 23/07/2021 13:07

It entirely depends on your financial position.

If you can truly afford it as in your won't really notice the expense and your family won't have to compromise on other things to enable the purchase then yes, go on and buy it.

If in the other hand you can't afford it easily, then I really wouldn't bother.

borntobequiet · 23/07/2021 13:08

OP you must remember that unless the value remains less than a Haven holiday, you are subject to the above nonsense.

Wonderfully snobbish response.
