DH says I’m ridiculous for wanting to spend this amount of money on a watch, who is BU?

I’ve been lusting after a Rolex datejust for as long as I can remember, but have always stopped myself from buying because there has always been something more ‘sensible’ to do with the money, like keeping it in savings or spending money on an experience like a holiday. This year I’ve been feeling pretty low what with the current situation and there’s no way I’ll be able to go on holiday this year as I’m vulnerable health wise.

Announced to DH this morning that I’m thinking about treating myself to a nice pre owned Rolex (£6k) on the basis that it’s what I’d usually spend on holidays in a year anyway and they hold their value pretty well, in the event that I ever wanted/needed to sell.

DH thinks I’m being absolutely ridiculous spending such a large amount of money on a watch and now I’m wondering whether I’m having a moment of madness. I should point out that the funds would be coming from my own pot of money, rather than joint.

@Greyhoundg1rl no one cares that was my point . @quizqueen was being ridiculous . Who cares what other people own if they can afford it and it does not harm anyone. The Op was asking a very reasonable question and being told that no one should buy high end items was silly, in my opinion.

I certainly don’t care who has what watch but @quizqueen clearly does.

The stealth boast comment was tongue in cheek Smile

@ Witchlight - I think your information is a bit out of date. Do you know how difficult it is to buy a men’s Submariner, Explorer, Daytona…or just about any other steel Rolex at the moment? People who are able to get their hands on them (usually after waiting years on a list unless they are an A list client) can immediately put them up for sale on the second hand market for a tidy profit. Rolex sports watches are in huge demand which far outstrips supply (which is how they manage to keep their prices so high and are such an incredibly successful brand).

Rolex make great products but these are mass produced (comparatively speaking). It’s like buying a Mercedes, well built, reliable, hint of “luxury” as everything feels solid and well fitted and it just does the job in a bullet proof sort of way. Holds value well so if the money is just sitting in your account why not enjoy it on your wrist instead?

The serious money though tends to be charged for watches with hand built movements created by people who spend years perfecting their art. But if the intricacies of the hand finished anglage or perlage on the movement of your A Lange & Sohne mean nothing to you or you don’t give a damn about a retrograde hour hand and perpetual calendar then you probably won’t understand why people are prepared to pay tens or hundreds of thousand on something that sits on your wrist and mainly tells the time.

I am fascinated--- is six thousand pounds a normal number for people to spend on their family holidays? I notice that nobody is blinking an eye here????

Oh I'm blinking, frantically! Still can't get over a pp having 3 watches that cost a fortune, not just 1, I'm rendered too speechless to comment on the holidays, I can't get past the watches Grin

pleasedonttextmyman · 23/07/2021 13:54

Why on earth would you post this?! Who cares?

😂
someone missed the sarcasm in the post...

@PrincessNutella

If you’re a family of 5, a week in Majorca in the summer is easily £4,500 to £6,000 for a basic package holiday. Look on Tui website. This is why we visit family in North America - flights and staying with family with some air bnb over a 3 week period is cheaper than one week half board in the Balearics.

kurtney · 23/07/2021 13:55

I used to work in a jewellers and Rolexes do hold their value, although they have to have all the papers with them for that to be true so make sure it does. And get it insured.

Personally, I'm not bothered about them. I don't think any watch is worth it but if you can afford, go for it. My DH is a collector of motorbikes that he doesn't have a driving license for so at least you'd get some use out of it Confused

Not in my world. Middle-upper income family, and we are going away for annual holiday soon, which cost us £1100 for the accommodation in peak kids hols. Will spend approx £500 spending money on food, treats and maybe a day trip. Every year we spend similar.

Our kids would not notice the difference if we spent £6000. All they want is our 1:1 attention all week, a beach, pool, and the odd foodie treat. We won't be hanging around in the accommodation all day - it's small and serves it's purpose. We will be outside, enjoying what the area has to offer.

Verv · 23/07/2021 13:56

@quizqueen

Don't you just look at the time on your phone! Spending ridiculous sums of money on so called luxury items is unnecessary and somewhat obscene ,in my book. It's about time all those high end companies went out of business and we only bought what we actually need.
Very good. Put thousands of people out of work to suit your uncalibrated moral compass.

Rolex spends a lot of time and money funding education and endeavour via the Wilsdorf foundation.

fingersfy · 23/07/2021 13:57

Re the 6k holidays I too baulk at that price but think it seems to be an acceptable one when you look at what you get for that.

m0therofdragons · 23/07/2021 13:57

I expect those complaining about watches being wasted money see no issue in buying a car and watching it depreciate with every mile driven.

Does anyone like buying cars? Sadly they’re essential. I guess it totally depends on how much money you have and whether spending it would impact on others and if you’d be happy for dh to spend the same fun money.

I don’t understand the desire to own a £6k watch - it’s like putting a target on yourself to be mugged or people will assume it’s fake, but I do appreciate we all get pleasure from different things.

Yes for us, £4000-6000 for family of 4. Wouldnt dream of spending £6000 on a watch though. Would much rather 2 weeks away and the memories (because for me it would have to be one or the other!) but I'm biased as watches just aren't something I coo over, I'm sure plenty of people would raise eyebrows at other things I buy though (like holidays maybe!)

userchange902 · 23/07/2021 14:00

To be fair a car does a lot more than just tell the time! It's a necessity for many. I don't expect everything I own to increase in value, nothing except my house really!

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 23/07/2021 14:01

You have the money, how could it be unreasonable? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Only your opinion matters on this one.

EmeraldShamrock · 23/07/2021 14:01

Why is it making you feel like that? Surely you realise different strokes for different folks people have very different financial options.
I'm wc working living week to week and it wouldn't shock or trouble me how people spend their money or the amount they spend.

Asdf12345 · 23/07/2021 14:01

Go for it if it’s what you want.

In my line of work it’s almost part of the uniform.

Dozycuntlaters · 23/07/2021 14:02

I do find MN strange, so full of people with strange opinions.

One answer - you're lucky to have that sort of money. That's jealousy and who is anyone to judge how OP spends her money. She's probably worked her arse off, saved hard etc.

Another answer - what's the point, what does it do? Well it tells the time for a start so that's more than an expensive ornament or piece of jewellery. Plus it could be an investment if the value increases.

These answers are just so judgy and strange. OP go for it, as long as you know you can afford it etc then it's up to you, not your DH.

The only thing I will say is just make sure it's what you want and you're not just doing it as a sod it I feel down moment. Because when you buy it, it will cheer you up for about five minutes and then you will feel exactly the same as you did before. But if this isn't the case then definitely do buy it.

Theluggage15 · 23/07/2021 14:03

I used to work in a high end watch shop. Our watchmaker always said Rolex were the best to buy. They are pretty bombproof and for wearing every day. Pateks are beautiful but I would go for a Rolex. A lot of our wealthy customers bought watches like Rolex and Patek not just because they like them but as investments. As a PP said, do make sure you get all the paperwork as Rolex will never replace paperwork and you will need it if you decide to sell.

Shade17 · 23/07/2021 14:04

Does anyone like buying cars?

Yes, love it! Most of mine are appreciating in value as well though!

DifficultBloodyWoman · 23/07/2021 14:04

@ThatOtherPoster

Have you ever tried one on? My dream watch was a Cartier Tank until I went to the shop, tried it on, and felt a bit meh.
Mine too!

But in person, it just wasn’t what I had hoped for.

So, on the plus side, I saved myself a bundle!

zukiecat · 23/07/2021 14:06

It's your money and you can afford it, so just buy it.

Personally, I think it's crazy money for a watch, especially second hand, obscene, but it doesn't matter what I think.

I certainly could never hope to have that amount to spend, I don't have a car, and apart from a day out here and there I haven't had a holiday in 20 years.

Saddlesore · 23/07/2021 14:06

I have been wearing a Rolex Datejust for over 20 years. What I like about it is that I don’t have to take it off for showering, swimming etc and I don’t even have to remember to wind it or change the battery. If other people clock it (see what I did there?) and make assumptions about me based on it, that’s their issue. The only time I take it off is when I want to wear a more delicate-looking watch (that I inherited) which looks better with an evening dress etc. I would say go for it. You have clearly been pining for one for a long time. They keep their value so if you do ever tire of it you can resell.

Stuffin · 23/07/2021 14:08

I have a watch that isn't quite as much as that but not too far off. It was bought with some inheritance as a reminder of that person. It is worn everyday and will last a lifetime so on that basis I would say it is value for money.

Mine isn't a Rolex as I didn't actually like the women's ones.

I wouldn't spend more than £50 on a bag but others spend thousands. People simply put difference value on things so if you want it, have the money and will enjoy it then buy it.

roseteathecatsandme · 23/07/2021 14:10

OP, if it will make you happy, go for it! Why not? People spend far more than that on allsorts. At least with a watch you will wear it everyday.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/07/2021 14:15

I've just googled the watch. Is it this one?

Designer swag is totally lost on me. It looks practically identical to the one underneath which is about 60quid.

I understand that there is added value in terms of craftsmanship, but surely the main appeal of the Rolex is the name? Because it just looks like an Argos watch

DH says I’m ridiculous for wanting to spend this amount of money on a watch, who is BU?

Quality watches generally hold value or increase. I would buy it if you want to as good investment.
