Applying to Soho House

Awlondoner · 23/07/2021 10:44

Hi everyone! I am trying to apply to Soho House London at the moment, and have the backing of two proposers. I was wondering if anyone was a member, knew what the process was like? How long should I expect to wait to hear whether I have got in?

Thank you!

What ho! Jolly good to hear you’re swelling the coffers to simply keep us apart from the beastly peasants! How’s your polo game eh what?
Mother tells me the waiting list is quite long, ever since Cressida and Tarquinius got squiffy at Clarence House, and lost the paperwork.
Run along now, matron won’t stand for tardiness. Toodle pip!

@MrsTulipTattsyrup

SW1amp - the irony of your complaining about the reverse snobbery on this thread, while your own post drips in snobbery, is glorious.

I lived and worked in just that sphere in London for a number of years, and managed a joyous social life very well, without cramming into a series of ‘naice’, expensive, exclusive venues with the sort of people who thought it was necessary to have the likes of Soho House. (Or frequenting Wetherspoons, ffs). All industries do better with a wide cross section of members, and the arts and creative industries should not be the preserve of wealthy, middle class people who flock together and maintain the borders so that everyone they work and socialise with is just like them.

Which is why the membership structure heavily discounts membership for younger people, and they get 50% off their bill on certain nights; why the events calendar is full of 'how to get ahead in XX sector' seminars and why they have a very good mentoring system for younger people in the industry, people who don't come from backgrounds with lots of people in the industry. It's why all the houses are a massive co-working space for people who can't afford their own studio, office etc

Great that you didn't need/want/like going to naice places, but that doesn't mean they aren't allowed to exist for those of us who do want to have the option of going to that sort of place.

Also, having somewhere like Soho House to go for afterwork drinks doesn't preclude you from going to other places on other nights.
I was simply making the point that the entire concept is going to be a complete anathema to you if your idea of a good night out starts and finishes with your local high street chain cut-price pub

@Letsallscreamatthesistene
I'll ask your permission in futureHmm
My point was I think the OP was "look at me, I'm applying to Soho House" when in fact it aint all that awe inspiring if people havent even heard of it. Hmm

Not sure you have quite got the right idea!
Steakandcheeseplease · 23/07/2021 17:12

I think they are serving fish fingers on their website. What a waste of money!

Miniestelle · 23/07/2021 17:12

I'm quite creative and I live in a northern town where most pubs are high street chain type pubs. However the concept isn't a complete anathema to me.

Steakandcheeseplease · 23/07/2021 17:12

OP give me a grand a year and ill tell your where all the hip/cool places are Wink

BarbaraPapa · 23/07/2021 17:13

I am admiring the OP's dogged ignoring of every post other than the 'useful' one s/he wants to connect with.

Truly, the OP is destined to go far in media circles, Soho House membership or no.

Well that is the cringest post yet, because anyone who knows the first thing about Soho House knows it is the opposite of posh polo Tarquin. It's for young-ish TV/arts/creatives.

You're thinking of the Hurlingham.

If you're going to make posts taking the piss out of people, at least get them the right way round or you look like more a twat than the people you're trying to mock

Now try again with a few Nathan Barley and coke references...

TSSDNCOP · 23/07/2021 17:17

My sister sees Russell Brand and contestants from Love Island there. Can't be that exclusive Wink

Thewinterofdiscontent · 23/07/2021 17:17

@WhatAShilohPitt

Some of the posters here sound unpleasantly jealous that someone else can afford to spend a grand or two on a member’s club. Some of these nasty comments will no doubt come from people buy plenty of shite that I’d consider a bigger waste of money.

OP, just ask the club direct.

It’s not whether people can afford a grand or two on something. It’s the something being exclusionary based on money. Which in itself would seem a little nasty would it not?
Jackgrealishscurtains · 23/07/2021 17:20

Oh, I never knew what Soho House actually was! I have seen it loads on Instagram, and them going to Soho Farmhouse, but I just thought it was a place, nor a private members club. One of the most prolific users of it that I have seen on Insta is also a big fuck-the-tories 'socialist' as well! Hilarious!

I can easily afford it, still wouldnt want to join for many many reasons. But thanks for trying to patronise me. 👍

I thought the arts & creatives were full of posh people although granted they might not play polo.

joystir59 · 23/07/2021 17:25

What's Soho House? Is it something to do with prostitution?

ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff · 23/07/2021 17:26

My sibling is a member of another London members club. They justify it by attending the gym there, it's a place to take clients in nice non-rammed surroundings and always guaranteed a table. I tagged along once and yes it was very nice. It's not always posh show off wankers. Can't speak for Soho House though!

SW1amp · 23/07/2021 17:26

@Thewinterofdiscontent

But there is very little about life not exclusionary based on money

But specifically for this industry,
You need to have a £2k MacBook just to learn how to do a lot of work, and that's before you spend another £5k a year on software packages
You still have to live within striking distance of Soho to work in a lot of industries because you'll be working or drinking til 2am and then need to get home
A soho house membership isn't suddenly going to rule you in or out of the workforce, because if you're not a member, you still need to find £10 per drink to meet people for a drink

If you don't know the industry, someone on the Internet isn't suddenly going to make you get it

ClawedButler · 23/07/2021 17:26

Sounds a bit Clem Fandango to me.

Go if you want, but don't expect many people to be impressed by this kind of out-dated wankery.

MagicSummer · 23/07/2021 17:27

What is Soho House - is it something to do with the Markle?

ClawedButler · 23/07/2021 17:28

Actually, thinking about it, it's quite a good way to round up all the tosspot media types in one place so no-one else has to interact with them.

EachandEveryone · 23/07/2021 17:31

Is the Groucho still a thing?

Speak for yourself but that doesn’t sound anything like any of the SH members I know!

EishetChayil · 23/07/2021 17:33

Cringe.

And really not as chi-chi as you probably think, OP. Soho House is for YouTube influencers and washed up "creatives".

Bloodypunkrockers · 23/07/2021 17:34

I think it sounds like the Fairmuir clubbie

Does Soho House do bingo before the "turn"?
